$28.00 seems fairly ludicrous considering we finished 6th of 8 last season!

Perth $12.00 - WTF?

Yes, $28 is a bit high, they seem pretty certain we will finish last, wonder if they same the game vs the Tards

Very very strange.

I agree with Melbourne and Brisbane to a degree.  I would have Adelaide higher and Perth ahead of Sydney.

Tab NSW doesn't hold us much better. personally I feel we should be paying around $15 with perth the same aswell as CCM, newcastle and north qld around $18

$21 for Nix on Centrebet as well. It is unusual for the NZ odds to be so far away from the Aussies considering it's our team. Normally the Aussie would have us longer (than here).

But fair call with the odds considering the signings so far. They are just gambling odds after all. Out to the team to prove them wrong!

I would agree with the odds if NQ weren't shorter than us. Strange.

Perth have made some terrific signings and i'd be very suprised if they weren't top 4 at least.

So you've all got your bets on before we start winning games and the odds tumble?

Nows the time to do it for sure, Nightz.

Re the big difference in the other teams odds compared to ours Valeo.
I wonder if all those Oz bookies are influenced by the huge ups the Oz press give their own teams and the complete lack of coverage the Phoenix would have had? In Oz you almost never hear about nz teams and what they're up to..unless they've just been beaten by an oz team!

Alternatively, perhaps the Australian bookies are smarter than that..for instance, have they tabbed the lack of a youth/reserve team as a significant factor? That will affect the Phoenix's ability to put a well conditioned,fully-up-to-speed squad on the field, week-in week-out,with WC Qualifiers and friendlies, injuries etc.

Whatever the case. Here's a question. How do you factor in team spirit, character, the ability to guts it out,
against-the-odds performances and a raucously vocal, fanatical supporters group that drives it own team on, and drives the opposition to distraction?
For me, I'll take those odds any day!

Or maybe they have worked out we can't recruit for sh*t and one injury to our only proven (injury prone) striker and we're near as damit impotent.

Yes, getting pissed off with our inability to actually make the signings that matter.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I have to agree here. Talk up Greenacre all you want, Smeltz won the Johnny Warren Medal last year and if we want to fill up his gap with only one striker (who hasn't been in form) then I think we are looking worse than last season. And we haven't had a proper pre-season game in our home city where at least 90% of our games will be played.

Sorry, just in an angsty mood.

Our not being able to participate in the ACL severely limits our bargaining power when signing players in my opinion.

You have 2 A league clubs offering a player the same $$$,one is eligible for ACL,the other cant qualify even if they win the league. Which are you going to choose...

That coupled with the lack of a youth/reserve team,and we're well...f**ked...

Are we on this all over again ?

1, What players have we missed out on to another A-League side other than Robbie Kruse ?

2, Much better that we had signed Astroclaus who may not have been up to it and Putter who had no spine for a fight so the doom merchants could all say we have signed someone.

I don't know what else people expect us to do to recruit.  We're flying players from all over the world here, we're not diving in and making knee-jerk signings and we have more space left in our squad than anyone other than the Mariners.

Get a f**king grip.

So beat the odds and put $5 on the Nix then...yeah right.  It will be interesting at seasons end top come back to this thread and see how they fared.  Odds should reflect history/form and latest player strenght/signings..ours do on both counts  Whilst we have helped some players get airpoints we have yet to solve our striker dilemma...I wait with bated breath...and I didnt think Astro was that bad..at least he scored a goal.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Honestly, there are worse sides at lower odds, I will be taking a few 'units' of the Phoenix at those odds.

All it would take is one big signing to see those odds slashed and I want to get them while they are long.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we are necessarily as long as the TAB are giving us and probably not worth last place. But the reality is we are not going to win the league, and that is what these odds are for.

Yeah, if it was top 4 i'd definately have a punt. In saying that I agree that we are not worse than NQF, Newcastle or CCM at this point and we don't know how Perth etc will go.

That's a distinct possibilty according to Ricki tonight on Radio Sport Total Football
...here  starts 5' 37'' in.

4 possible strikers in the Phoenix's sights, 2 of those would be straight signings if they came on board so they should be class,...plenty of space on the roster, so salary cap shouldn't be an issue.....
sounds pretty good to me.Here's hoping.

If they're walking straight in, I would guess there is a chance that cap won't be an issue.

When a player with European caps, and a dutch first division player have to trial...

Little slow on that News sorry.
At first, I thought you were taking a shot about a pre-season "circus" with trialling strikers, ha!.... which didn't seem to sit too well with all your other supportive posts.

I've always been partial to a big "marquis" myself.. and El Grapa will nail me for that too
And btw, Hard News... I'm getting that" he knows more than he's letting on" feeling again...

Nope.  Not a thing currently.

Had an inkling Putter was going, but where the next names come from I have no more idea than anyone else who has read Tony's quotes over the weeks.

Still, good odds for the Phoenix win people.Be worth putting an Aussie fiver on, before any big names get announced.

Agree that these odds are for winning the league, not what order the teams will finish.
With winning the league in mind the odds seem correct as we don't have a show, but I wouldn't bet against an invitation to the play-off party given that nearly everyone is invited.

Those odds are definetly worth a lazy tenner. $280 return. Dont understand how even the NZ TAB puts us in last place.

I was suggesting that maybe the no ACL and youth team were contributing to the odds. I didnt mean to start a whole debate about it

But,we may not have necessarily missed out on players to other clubs, but may have had to pay them more to get compete etc.And as for the youth team, that is a more direct disadvantage that would have perhaps lengthened our odds over NQF.

If someone offers 50 to 1 we get the top 4 I'll put my kids fiver on it! no less.... as a shocking season is 4 weeks away when you dont have a marksman or two!

Greenacre is a marksman, it's pretty much all he is about...

...and we've turned down players who have played in the Eerdivisie and has intenational goals in Europe which to me says we've set our goals pretty high.

But,we may not have necessarily missed out on players to other clubs, but may have had to pay them more to get compete etc.And as for the youth team, that is a more direct disadvantage that would have perhaps lengthened our odds over NQF.

I'm about 90% certain NQF aren't in the Yoof league at this stage.

The reason the TAB have these outs out is because they are NZ based, there is no loyalty involved....they see the phoenix as not being able to win the league so they want interest and money thrown behind these odds.....if they nix win the league they are set to lose an absolute bundle, but to be fair it looks like a smart play on their behalf

Why get offended at the odds?If you don't think they are a fair reflection then that's a good thing, better value if you want to chuck some money at an unlikely win

What are the TAB offering for a Phoenix top 4 finish? If we are at longer odds than any other A-League side, I'll definitely be taking a punt. Although... I hate making a bet and having to wait all season to see if I've won. Impatient like that...

He takes Melbourne's penalties so will score a few (remember how many Smeltzy got from the spot).

He averages about 4-5 penalties a season, hardly going to win the golden boot with the 1 or 2 he might sneak elsewhere.

He should be putting money on one of his Melbourne strikers and let them have penalty duty.

Tom Pondeljak ahead of Greenacre though ? Please, he scored 10 goals in 73 A-League games, or 4 seasons. Greenacre won't be that bad ... surely.
