Here here Tigers.

Football manager has a lot to answer for, everyman who has spent $400m taking Chelsea to a Champs League win think they are gods gift to coaching.

Check the replies,  Is it because they are young HN?, they just don't seem to get it!!!   aaarrrrghhh!!!!

I can understand 'da youfs' having dodgy taste in music that's their role in life, but have we failed to bring them up right??? how hard can it be to understand - in proper teams (not capital 9 etc) players develop skills and experience in a position!! That is were they perform best 99 times out of a 100!

well said, sir. hats off

to be fair, i suppose that would make them a better coach than 'the special One'  tigers2007-11-06 21:50:52

Wow settle down lads.

Change for the sake of change may be foolish, but change for the sake of shoring up a very dodgy defence is not foolish.

If Clebo is injured I would much rather have Johnson at centre back then Old and O'Dor.
Johnson has been quality in the midfiled in every game he's played but once Aloisi's back he might be forced out of the midfiled.
Johnson can tackle, hes decent with the ball, can pass and is defensively minded.
O'Dor makes some good tackles but makes far too many mistakes through lapses in concentration.
Old had his chance, and was very average.

I could've sworn Christie wasn't a right back before this season...

O'Dor is twenty years old and if fit should play every game, by this time next season he'll be one of the best Centre Backs in the league.

The difference with Christie is that we had no other right backs.  We have players who have years of experience at CB.

Give me solid and reliable at centre back anyday. Its the same as a keeper. You need confidence in them, knowing they will always be there when needed. Who has these qualities in the side? Yep, perhaps Johnson, and Dodd. I would say Dodd could be a natural choice centre back. Wonder how he would go with Johnson. With Lia playing, we have a wealth of midfielders, so perhaps we can look to them to help strengthen the back four.

Dodd is a rock.

But how many goals do we have to leak because of O'Dor before he becomes a solid defender.

Lia is playing well but needs to sort out his tackling, could've easily had 2 red cards already.

FFS lads, we keep our first clean sheet of the season and you want to change ?

Seriously, WTF ?

Who cares if it was streaky, it was a CLEAN sheet, a Nil, not a sausage, 3 points thanks to a conceding no goals...

Ricki - "Well done lads, clean sheet last week, rather than build on that I'll change it.  Johnno, you've seen Centre Backs play all your career, fancy a crack ?"

I really do despair.

Always have to re-assess options though Hard News. We could just as easily have coughed up 3 goals last week. It's still broke and in need of fixing, don't you think?

Wingback, that's why I say keep Lia in the midfield....!!

Perth had scored 7 in the previous three games, but the sides they acored against haven't replaced the players.

I don't think it's broken.  Dodd back and a more defensive midfield mindset, plus the keeper the defence was used to and we kept a clean sheet.

The perfect solution is of course to completely change the line-up, I mean it worked so well when forced against us in Adelaide.

It's a new club, totally new combinations, every other side has been doing this for two years.  If you break down the combinations every week everyone has to re-learn things from scratch.

I say again.  No change, and certainly not, 'on a hunch he might be okay' selections in positions. This week they chould start exactly the same XI if all players are available.

For sure, if anyone thought the first season amongst veterans was going to be easy, they had another think coming. I'm confident though that next season we'll be a sharp outfit. All the signs are there of a team that has the survival instincts and the nuts to tough it out and do well enough in its first season.

I'm definitely not one for knee jerk reactions though.

Pao, I was totally agreeing about keeping Lia in midfield, he's been very impressive!

News, all i'm suggesting is the we look at other options for centre back, not completely changing the line-up at all.

We played well against Perth but Robinson had a shocker and could've had about six. I think Dood, Lochhead and Christie should definitely remain. Our defending has been comical at times, if we adopt the approach of not changing anything even if players are making mistakes then no matter how long they play together we will keep conceading.

Because theres a chance he will bring more stability than O'Dor or Old will. Lets face it, he can't be much worse.

How you can say thats change for the sake of change.... have you seen our defence so far this season? Certainly leaving something to be desired...

A chance... a chance.... oh FFS.

Don't make you ban you Benny...

O'Dor is improving with every game, is quick, getting more confident and making less errors.  Stand by him and this year we'll finish exactly where I expected, next year we'll make the four.  Convert a 34yo midfielder and next season we start from scratch, even on the slight chance it comes off for this season.

Well some people are putting Old in their team. I'd rather Felipe play there than Old.

The defence can't keep leaking like it is - or the only time we'll get points from another game will be the next time we play perth

Well last time we changed we conceded 4, the moment we returned to the established line-up we kept a clean sheet... that's all I'm saying.

It won't keep leaking.  It gets better every game and will continue to do so as the players establish a knowledge.

The other problem is that Johnson and Brown were huge last week, changing that would be foolishly risky.

I'm happy to keep the defence as it is....

But if injuries occur, and Old comes in, its gonna be a disaster.  He makes plodder look like a 100m sprinter

Agree that Johnson is key is midfield. But I thought that he was superb form the first game he played and then he got dropped for no apparent reason. When Aloisi's back I'm not sure who will start in the middle of midfield.

I think they should stick with the same three as last week.

Yep O'Dor has showed enough to deserve staying in the CB position for the rest of the season. He NEEDS to develop a good combination with Dodd by next year.

He's shaky at the moment but it'll come with time.

Oldie actually had a fair bit of pace at school...I couldn't run him down in athletics! But I don't know what's happened to him over the last 18 months or so, he just hasn't been the player he used to be.

I'd probably let Clemenson go and look for another defencer myself.

Hope Aloisi sits this one out, the midfield looked  a lot sharper withought him to be honest  and hopefully missing a couple of games might help him find his form again, he has looked woefully behind the pace the last two or three games he has played in and whether its injury or just lack of fitness/form im sure the team and the player will benefit long term if he misses out on  first team football for a couple of weeks!

I agree.Aloisi has tried hard but we benefitted from Lia's fitness.I believe Brown and Lia will start taking control of the midfield thus providing our defence with some assistance.

Start with the same 11 but PLEASE put Felipe on the bench.

It was a clean sheet, but it was still a very shaky display by our defence, and if a change can be made that will give us another clean sheet and make our defence more solid then I'm happy with that.

Yeah players shouldnt be tried in other positions at all, despite the fact they posess qualaties that would be useful in those positions.

I mean who would play Harnwell up front, f**king ridiculous!

Christie aswell, hes a  CM shouldnt be playing RB...

oldy was in the top few for the agility test at the start of the season and quickest over 200m- he has gas - just needs some decent players round him to get the confidence up. Totally agree with comments above on keeping O'Dor in team, these young guys will be class in a season or two if they keep in the sort of environment, no point putting a midfielder in at CB near the end of their career

i know in the past ricki has not been afraid 2 make the tough decisions and though i dont necessarily think it would be wise i think ross will play. my ideal team would be the one posted above by betters

I'm still unsure on Ross. I think he'll come in for Johnson if anyone, but maybe he'll be on the bench. We'll have to wait till Sunday to find out :)

Hey Bopman,

I'm not sure from your post which you regard as the tough decision - my guess is it would be tough either way

- changing the composition of a midfield that played well in a crucial winning game

-effectively dropping the captain (though the whole coming back from injury thing makes the 'dropping' slightly less embarrassing for the player)

I think i'd start with last weeks centre-mid trio and have Ross on the bench (but that's me almost avoiding the tough decision

I imagine he'd be pretty fired up if he came on with 20 mins to go.

edit - Just read this again, and no it doesn't sound right to me  - I'd start Ross Aloisi!!

I think we should keep it the same.  As others have touched on, and Ricki has also mentioned, the defensive problems have not been only the defenses fault.  Brown, Johnson and Lia were great last week and should continue.  Sure Perth weren't exactly great but our boys will only be better for some consistency and confidence put in them.

One of my big questions is whether we can continue to score goals with that line-up.  I like having Coveny up front for Smeltz to work off, but who to put him on for?  Maybe Lia, but that puts a bit more pressure on Elrich and Daniel to defend more, which may not be a bad thing.

A good thing from last week was that Christie and Lochhead got forward more and I think we have looked the best when that happens.

Hmmm, okay after that rambling, I have changed my mind and I reckon we use Coveny for Lia, keep Brown and Johnson there to help the defence and you've got Daniel and Elrich to create things for Coveny & Smeltz, and use Lochhead and Christie a lot on the wings.

We can then use Lia and Filipe's energy later in the game, hopefully once the lads have set it up nicely with a 2 nil lead...

i find it comical that after the sydney game felipe was the best import in the league, now he doesnt even warrant a starting spot in our team. i understand the circumstances tht see him on the percieved outter but if he is good enough surely he will play
or is it the case now that he will play wen we are at home and wont wen we r away?

seems to be a case of Ricky wanting a centre mid combination that can hold and win possession and cover when we lose the ball and the fact that Elrich and Daniel are the more natural wide players than Felipe

I hope felipe does get back into the starting line-up (he's probably our most effective player in terms of his ability to produce something creative)  but I'd settle for seeing him regularly off the bench (especially for away games) if that brings us more consistency in terms of picking up points
