Old did an excellent job at Right Back against Melbourne... Right back is one of the least areas for concern.

I'd say Daniel as left back, because we can't afford to have a weakened defence. Putting a replacement left winger in is not as bad as putting a replacement left back in. Daniel can easily slip back and he'd be a good runner of the ball, like Lochead does. Right back will probably be given to Old, he'll suffer, but won't be too bad. If pushed, Ricki could always move O'Dor out right and put Cleberson in the centre with Dodd, but depends whether he wants to break that partnership. And even then there is Lia who could fill this spot. Brown should be replacable, seeing he hasn't started yet this year due to injury, so just Coveny's strike partner is the big question. I personally would like to see Brownlie get a start or even Costa! I don't think George is fit enough yet to start.

huge call about starting options up front ! did any one see the under17 world cup.

I don't think he was excellent, but he did a decent job. He certainly wasn't garbage.

I heard Old was pretty weak at right back against Central coast

It was O'Dor who had the shocker.
I agree Old vs Melb was poor for at least the first half. Did improve

"These guys who haven't been playing want to get in there and prove a point to everybody that they're worthy of a spot in the team. If we get a result I think that's going to make it even tougher on Ricki for the following week."

 A quote from Coveny  http://sportal.co.nz/default.aspx/football-news-display/phoenix-to-play-while-coach-is-away-37061

not a complete surprise obviously, but after all our concerns about thinness of the squad for certain positions it is a bit reassuring to remember that there'll be some pretty highly motivated lads on the park

That was the Nix's first ever A-League game and for the first half hour all anybody seemed to do was be nervous and hoof the ball...not surprising the youth had a slow start...came good in the second half like the rest of the team...O'Dor has benefited from a run at centre back and established himself as a decent player maybe all Old needs is a bit of confidence shown in him and a couple more games...

O'Dor was never a bad player - just played out of position for that CCM game.

Old did fine vs Melbourne and he will do fine this weekend. Its Clebs i'm worried about.

Whats all this talk about Costa? Did not do anything to help his cause at the U17 world cup and we simply have better options such as Brownlie, Covs and George. I'd put Draper ahead of him anyway.
Daneil will be a good left back, and offer good build up from the back. Elrich hopefully plays. We eont be too weak and hopefully get a good result.

I'd say that he is there more for the training environment, and would be surprised if he played while the nix are still in contention for the playoffs and there aren't major injury concerns

I think Daniel should only be used as a wingback in a 3-5-2 formation, rather than a fullback in a 4-4-2

He certainly didn't show as match fit in the one game he has been seen in.

If he was fit he'd have played against Perth, you don't pay Marquee wages to a fit player and leave him out.

Unless it's David Zdrillic, who you pay marquee $$ within the cap and you try not to play.

I saw Zdrillic score and nobody believes me he was 18 yards out, with nobody in sight
I saw Zdrillic score and nobody believes me

I saw a Zdrilic goal and nobody believes me

I saw a Zdrilic goal and nobody believes me
And what's it gonna take for Zdrilic to score tonight

Not according to him......
====

"I am probably about 80 per cent fit but match fitness is different to training and once I get two or three matches under my belt, I'll be pretty ready to go.

Forty or 50 minutes playing this week will be no problem," said Elrich who looked forward to playing against younger brother Tarek's Newcastle side if he got the chance."

Hope he is good for a half, we need him and also would like to see him

Is Romario available as a guest player?
Selhurst Park, 25 January 1995
What else could he have done?

Romario AND Jardel... you'd need some serious structural engineering to have a pitch survive that.

It would look like a moonscape.

Except he was an excellent NZFC player last year at only 16...  I'm not part of the Greek bandwagon, but the lad has game and even at the U-17's looked to have a touch and vision beyond most of those he played with and against.

If he can sort out the pressure that has been put upon him by all the media hype he'll have a long career ahead of him at levels way above the Central League.

I only wish we could get Jardel.  He's the only player in the A-league who can use his own gravity field to collect the ball.

Yeah he will have a good career ahead of him but not yet. Still quite a bit off this level currentely.

How do we know ?  We've never seen him play at 'this level'.  If Aus thought the same the likes of Burns or Zullo would never play.  They came from State league and national age group sides, like Costa and Draper.

He looked significantly better than Elrich in a match they both played in two weeks ago, so by that logic Elrich obviously isn't up to it either.

If we are 4-0 up and cruising ,chuck him on and tell him to fill his boots!!

Costa is a mature player for his age - but there's a lot to say for experience - and there are lads in the team with buckets more than him..

Why's that? Right back is Old's preferred/natural position....yes he hasn't had much time to prove himself, but I chalk that up to the second half of his season with Newcastle - being relegated to the bench without warning cant be good for any players confidence.

I reckon the team for Sunday's game will have something to prove and won't let the Phoenix down.  These boys are hungry to play and probably want to prove they are ready and waiting to be the best in the league.  Looking into my crystal ball I think it is going to be a hard hitting, fast, agressive, attacking game and I won't be surprise if it has a high score. We have depth and talent and those Newcastle Jets won't be able to keep up with young legs.

Need more subs than 4, 7 would be good and then can put developing players on the bench and can get some experience it those sort of situations
