The answer or appropriate player? I don't know but I would say look how much better Rooney plays partnered with Crouch and running off of him than he does Owen. A big tall strong strapping lad to hold up and control it for the partner.

I think that argument doesnt quite work when you consider he plays alongside Tevez at Man Utd. A big/little combination isn't always the way to go, if the players can link well and create space and opportunities for one another then it works.

Smeltz did just fine up there on his own holding up the ball last season. Porter looks fantastic and the two of them could be fearsome together. The analogy I'd perhaps use is Shearer (Smeltz) and Owen (Porter), one a good old fashioned center forward (strong, good in the air, genuine poacher) and the other a fast, skillful player who is equally hungry for goals.

Daniel is a great player and an asset to NZ football at the moment so I'd certainly want him to start, however throughout last season he often game off/swapped with Felipe during the game.  We don't need to have Gao, Leo and Daniel all on the field at the same time - sit one on the bench and use them as an impact player around the 65-70 min mark.  Also having 3 players with similar styles is great if we get injuries to any of them because it doesn't mess up our team strategy and formation having some interchangeable midfielders.

Depending on whether we get Joel Porter we may see one of them sit up as a temporary striker, coming off mid-late game for Coveny or Costa.

sounds like a plan...but who do you leave on the bench?

I wasn't so much referring to the big/little comparison as more the strong lad who can hold the ball up with the other to run off. Generally, they are big tall blokes....

I would have to start Daniel on the left with Gao on the bench. Daniel was the form playmaker last season until he got that ankle injury late season. He combined well with Lockhead down the left flank(when we player 442). He is a great player but I have my doubts about him playing in the centre. He would just get muscled off the ball too much in the A-League. On the left he has the space to get crosses in.

Lets not get too caught up in picking our best 11.  Its a squad game and if we have some duplication thats a good thing, it means we can continue our style even when we have injuries, suspensions.  Theres no point having a strong starting side and rubbish for the rest, youll get found out even in a short season like the A League.

Normo's coming home

Yeh that was kind of my point- I wanted everyone to come up with the 11s (and not necessarily the strongest team) with Costa in them somewhere...to see where people thought he might play this year...

From all this it's looking like we'll have the ability to swap players and play to our strengths if Ricki gets the players he wants. It's all about having the players to pick against the opposition and it could change from week to week, for instance - no need for left back when we play Central Coast

If there is no left back then what will El**ch do with the ball?  Should we put a cut-out on the field?

Dodd the quickest? Archie ran past both him and Rees when Melborne were at 10 men.

Ferrante wont start because if you start Daniel, China girl, Leo the greek, who is going to make tackles in that team??? None of those guys tackle

WHO IS GOING TO MAKE THE TACKLES BOYS?????????

I get tired of repeating that....

Gao can tackle, ever seen him play. Herbert says he's the best player he's coached...and Herbert's coached the likes of Killen, James, Elliott and Nelson, wouldn't have said that if he can tackle. And Daniel's defensive game improved every game last year and he used to be a defender!! As for Leo, havent seen him play that much so can't judge.

He could well pass air! Think he did a lot of that last season. But a burger wrapper would just get him depressed at the loss of a good friend, as suggested above a cutout of a burger on legs would stop him in his tracks

That is gold...Great signing for cc....'whata waste of money'!

How bout this for a formation?

                   Moss
Dodd  Durante McKain Lochead
               Lia Ferrante
                    Gao
Bertos                           Daniel
                  Smeltz

Could possilbly swap Bertos and Gao
Or even Dodd and Lia

On Bench:
Paston
Sigmund
Costa
Coveny
Porter

Gaos more of a wide player. I dont mind the idea of one of gao, daniel or bertos being put on for impact. And it porters signed he should be a definite starter
