Seemed acceptable - but perhaps further work required.  We've had comments about Dewhurst ranging from...

"He talks too fast."
"He talks too much."
"It's football - not horse racing."
"It's like listening to an underwater commentary."
"Makes Harper and Slater seem coherent."

Is Dewhurst the 2008/09 Phoenix SKY commentator?

Personally - I like his vocal qualities.

At least he's a Kiwi.

Discuss.

I think last night was a one off because Boring de Jong was unavailable.

I was at the game so don't have an opinion but I'd be interested to hear what others thought.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Covered the game like he was on the radio. More positive than De jong(not hard)

Both are still hopeless though.

It's a bloody hard transition from radio to TV.  Thought he sounded good.

Didn't mind him. Thought he talked a bit too much though - that is understandable coming from radio where silence is probably the worst thing possible.

He did really well I thought.  I enjoyed listening to him.  Lets hope de Jong gets a contract commentating lawn bowls (he's as exciting as the aforementioned sport) and Dewhurst takes over for the Phoenix.

I thought that Dewhurst did a great job, and Mark Elrick was pretty good too.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

He did talk a bit much but it was good in the respect he drowned out that idiot Elrick quite a bit. I'm sure no one likes listening to Elrick...he's a fool.
I used to like Gordon Irving as well, him and Harry Ngata would be a good combo I reckon.

Imagine Glen Larmer and Harry Ngata commentating together.

That would not be a good combo I reckon.

Glen Larmer is shockingly bad.

Three for me, and two for them.

Glen Larmer is so bad that TVNZ should have just taken the Chinese TV feed - and then go with it in Mandarin.

However, Glen Larmer is perhaps just the 'useful idiot' that TVNZ desires in its attempt to totally subjugate NZ football.  But that's another story.

Was someone else with him? You really need atleast two for television so they can discuss things.

Dewhurst gets genuinely excited, Fred just has a very boring voice for TV.  I do like Ngata on the sideline, his commentary for Smelt's equaliser first game vs Melbourne is fantastic, he just goes ballistic

Cant comment as all we had to compare him to was Mark bloody Elrick. I likr Ngata and Dennis the Menace, at least their enthusiastic, nothing worse than listening to a droner, *cough * fred de one tone *cough*

Does anybody know why de Jong is so boring?  Is it genetic or what?

Watched the replay today and the commentary was bloody annoying, am glad that Elrick didn't get much talking space either. Would have put it on mute but like hearing YF chanting, I thought "you're so sh*t its unbelievable" was crystal clear, that's the best commentary.

You could tell that Dewhurst usually does radio. without pictures the commentator has to do a lot more work  to get the atmosphere of the game across. I still liked the fact that Dewhurst, knew all the players, had a bit of history about everyone, and had enough comments to add flavor to the slower parts of the game. I say keep him, he will only get better with practice.

Just for once I find myself agreeing wholeheartedly with UG!  Poor old Fred commentates like the ex-footballer he is.  You need a professional broadcaster.  Sky pay peanuts and get monkeys.  Sadly, these old NZ players just don't have the depth of knowledge to justify being on TV.  Ricki was the only one who ever offered any real analytical insight into the game because he's a coach and a great student of the game.  De jong, Ngata and Elrick?  Just not in the same league.

the dew sounded fine, his comments were ok, but he just talked to much, he ruined my concentration in watching the game and as has been mentioned elrick didnt know what had hit him as he could hardly get a word in!

Hope he improves with time
