The effect of the draw on the Phoenix's results

Ive just been having a look at the effect of the draw on the Phoenixs results.  Its quite interesting that aside from Brisbane that weve played away at twice are above us in the table.  Conversely, the only side that weve played twice at home who are above us is Perth.  Now I just dont know what to make of this, if anything, but surely it is instructive.  Are our away results poor because we struggle away from home, or have we been unlucky to be drawn away twice against the top sides?

Here is the data:

Played at home

Played Away

Points gained

Gold Coast

1

2

4 (1 match to play)

Sydney

1

2

0

Melbourne

1

2

2

Newcastle

1

2

6

Perth

2

1

4

Phoenix

Central Coast

2

1

4 (1 to play)

North Queensland

2

1

5

Brisbane

1

2

4

Adelaide

2

1

2 (1 to play)

Average points gained against teams played at home twice = 1.5 points per game

Average points gained against teams played at home once= 1.14 points per game

The calculation above doesnt really add anything, and if you break it down further (i.e. how do we average in away games only against teams weve played twice at home vs teams we play once at home) theres not a lot of data points.

Personally I dont think the draw has been that kind to us as most of our tough matches have been away from home.  However, weve picked up the bulk of our points at home against sides below us in the table.

Is there anything in this or am is this natural seeing as we win at home and lose away?

I think its a good stat. Does have some meaning...

But perhaps if we had played the top teams at home twice then we wouldn't be undefeated at the ROF?

I don't know if it's had any bearing on our results or not but hats off for being nuts enough to sit down and work it all out , JD!

I was just thinking about this...with the way the draw has worked out, we've had to play the (now) clear cut top-three games, all twice away from home. (chuck in Newcastle too perhaps)

We've also only have 13 home games (11 at the ROF) and obviously 14 away.

Assuming the table stays similar for next season, things will look more favourable for us next season. We'd get Melbourne/Sydney/GCU all twice at home and have 14 home vs 13 away games. Only thing would be two trips to Perth (where we've played like sh*t) and two 'tough' trips to NQF.

I believe next season is another expansion year, with the new Melbourne team. So next season could be a slightly different approach for fixtures. Plus one team will have a rest every week.

Has there been any announcement on how 2010/11, with 11 teams, will be done? 30 games, retaining the same 3 meeting format?

I hope so! 30 games (15 at home)...hopefully a longer A-league season so there is less time before the junior football starts up and less time before the start of the next season.

Really not looking forward to March - June, athough the WC build ups will be good (however now with this broadband thing i might sneak a few EPL games in during March - May)

I'd recommend the Saints for the football off season - best value family sports entertainment in Wgtn ($180 for family season ticket for 9 games last season!) and our benefactor Terry S covers much of the cost of that team as well, and turns up to every home game, along with quite a few Nix players!

Maybe the teams who are beneath us on the table are there as a RESULT of having to play us twice at home (which stats have shown is one of the toughest away fixtures for most teams in the league)

Chicken or egg innit.

But quite possibly just a crap draw for us.

Can we really say that the Phoenix, one of 10 teams, by getting big points against the teams we have played twice at home, have caused them to remain in the bottom half of the table?
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Eggsactly.  If we read too much into this one might suspect the FFA of fowl play.

Still I think this season we do have some things to crow about.

I agree, though its too hard to really boil it down - especially considering there are teams still scrambling for places in the top 6, we might just get this one poached out from underneath us. Then we'd be fried.

Yes.  doesn't pay to be too cock-a-hoop now.  Do you think henyone would peck us for 4th place?

The table is so congested - all the teams are cooped up around the play-off berths.

The A League with 16 teams would be cool. Thats 15 home games and 15 away games and ditch that third game. I'd also like to see the playoffs - if they insist on having them, restricted to the top 4 teams. Why not even dump that and then run a cup competition instead to run in conjunction with the League. bit like a League cup comp.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
