The FIFA Club World Cup 2015 - Wellington Phoenix

Can someone please help me out here?

Are the Wellington Phoenix able to represent Oceania at the FIFA Club World Cup? I realise we do play in an Asian league but we are a team from Oceania. Confusing I know. Where do we draw the line?

Would the Phoenix represent Oceania better than Auckland? Probably. Although a playoff match only seems fair to decide that.

If we can't represent Oceania, would we then represent Asia? Could we then have both Wellington Phoenix and Auckland at the same tournament?

So many questions. Would love some clarity on this. Cheers.

No, can't represent Oceania or Asia.

Only team in the world that can't play in a continental competition.

It might be Mohammed Bin Hannam's fault?

Is either one a possibility in the near future? Of the two continents, do you have a preference Bevan?

Oceania would be easier but if we represented Asia we could have Wellington and Auckland.

I thought we could but would have to forfeit because we could never field a team?

While Canada is part of CONCACAF, its Pro teams play in the US and it's Amateur teams in Canada (just like us).  Its Pro teams play in Canada's Cup competition allowing them to represent Canada in continental competition.

Its a pity the Chatham Cup is only winter based as it would be nice to see ALL of NZs clubs/franchises (Nix included) be able to take part and the holder qualify for the O League.

No. Our licence says we aren't eligble for ACL.

You do remember that for that argument, they are in the same confederation, right?

The Phoenix are an NZ team that play in a different confederation and its only for exemption, that their players are in our comp.

Eligibility of clubs to participate in AFC Champions League

Football Federation Australia

Renewal of Wellington Phoenix FC's license in the Hyundai A-League was approved by FIFA until 2016. AFC acknowledged the extension of Wellington Phoenix FC's license and its participation in Australia Competitions. As FIFA/AFC/OFC agreement, clubs from Australia will be dealt with like it is now.

Only Australian clubs can participate in ACL and highest placed eligible clubs will take ACL spots reserved for clubs from A-League in case Wellington Phoenix FC wins the first, second position in the A-League, or wins the cup tournament.

So if we can't represent Asia, can we represent Oceania? A Chatham Club including the Nix.

and maybe leave some Australian players out if we have to?

I know this sounds pedantic but are we ineligible or is it that we can't qualify?

When NZF signed off on the Phoenix licence (March 2007) it or should I say former NZF CEO Mr Setter had all ASB Prem clubs sign an agreement that would let the Nix's compete in the O-League (Via playoff>?) - How it would work I don't know but it is fact.

They should do a podcast on it.

Well Jeff we have the WeeNix playing in our premier competition so we are halfway there already and as you and I know, there was a loophole created in '07 letting the Nix in the O League via a play-off as others have mentioned.

(PS I was aware of the Confederation mess but chose to turn a blind eye due to the above).

That's interesting. Obviously a playoff has never happened. Would like to know more about this.

Well can't qualify through the AFC. And at the moment there is no way to qualify through OFC. Unless the rules of the competition are rewritten. Which I doubt they will.

Auckland would almost get to the game and stumble at the final hurdle.

Nah, triangular. Ramon already has it sorted. Barca, Real and ACFC at the Camp Nou. Guaranteed NZ citizenship to winners. You heard it here first.

What was that deal with Graeme Seatter and an OFC play off? No chance of it happening again?

No. We can't represent Asia. We can't represent Oceania. That includes both the A-League squad and the ASB Premiership squad. And that won't change in the near future.

My point is that its more that we don't have a qualification route, rather than being inelgible?

Ineligible through AFC. No route through OFC.

Last time it was AFC who didn't want us in the ACL. Assume it's still the same.
