A question which I hope will receive a reasoned response;

When the YF founders decided on what form their stadium support (chants etc) would take; why was the decision made to go with British style chanting and the like?

Im just interested.

YF founders made a decision to make the Fever Zone (chanting, etc) as organic as possible - it is just so much more fun, and easy to join in with, when it is spontanous.  I think that it ended up more british as most of people in there follow UK teams and/or have lived in the UK.

Not many of us know that many chants in Spanish, is probably a factor as well.

Not even different languages sometimes, half the time it's just different accents.

What other style 'chanting' is there?

I've been to football games in a few countries and it seems to be a toss-up between "British Style"  or nothing at all.

God help us if we start watching the Phoenix games in silence....

What do you think the Westpac Stadium officials would think if we did like the fans in Greece - burn the seats, rip them up, and throw them at the firefighters who are desperately trying to put the fires out under cover of the Police riot shields!

Was it even a decision?

I think it was more a case of "let's be football  supporters" rather than let's be British-style football supporters.

In my experience, limited though it is, football support is much the same in most of the world.

imagine the news coverage pao1908, the bottle incident has been blown way out of proportion . How would the media react to "ultras" and hooligan behavior

chanting in other languages would spice things up, PAOK does a good italian one at italian refs-

that's right dial square, no decision was made as such apart from the decision to let the whole thing evole.  we've been against a 'songsheet' approach from the outset and it's interesting to see where we have landed after a handful of home games.

it will be interesting to see how things evolve throughout the rest of the season; many have expressed a desire for a few changes, so we may well end up chanting in spanish or greek...

For Gods sake, no one suggest fans doing a friggen haka, it's been done to death in the last 10 years and has lost all sense of spiritual meaning. I had to laught when I saw the "Tall Blacks" do it. Cameron wasn't in view and it looked clasic with a whole pile of White guys and ex Yank players doing it. To me it was funny yet sad at the same time!
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Yeah, I'm sick of it too.

The All Blacks Limited have ruined it for other sports; what with the new extended remix, extra facial expressions, non stop advertising designed to arouse our sense of national being, etc.

I still get a bit of a buzz watching the Kiwis perform the haka.  Not so sure about the Tall Blacks though...  Harry Ngata led a pretty decent effort for the All Whites in Mexico after the Confed Cup game against Brazil!  Maybe we could invite him down to lead us alongside Wiremu Patrick?

Agreed its ridiculous for basketball and under 17s football teams doing it. But I dont think it has lost all sense of spiritual meaning, to see the way the maori all black players respond and to see the fire in their eye when doing the Haka is brilliant.

Try saying that in a Glasgow pub (especially if you have an English accent).

good on yer LG - this whole haka thing berates the sporting ethic, and should be left to the 'originals' i.e. Rugby Union ONLY. We stand the chance of becoming the proverbial International joke!

As a youngster in the 60's/70's to see the AB's perform this at every test - perhaps 4-6 times a year, it was special. Nowdays every man and his dog are doing it. IMHO it's been over exposed and that "specialness" has been lost. And with various results following the Haka come to fruition, it shows that the opposition teams are not as afraid anymore as they once were!

I think that 1987 was the first time the AC's had performed the haka in NZ - up till then, it was only done in other countries.

That was what fcuked me off so much when the AC's got all precious about it in Wales a couple of years ago - you see old footage of the haka and it was a joke.  All out of sync, the honkees (like the monkees, but whiter) looking all confused, etc.  It then became the biggest marketing tool in the nation, and they start going on about 100 years of tradition, and all that clap-trap.

Stick to selling wheet-bix, lads.
