The Nix Players off the field behaviour

Just a quick mention regarding the nix off the field behaviour. This may have been mentioned before, but it is always good to reinforce the positives.

These guys are true professionals, and after the game at 4 kings were only too happy too entertain me and my drunken ramblings, and sign a couple of things for some kids who couldn't be there.

One things that has stood out over the last couple of years has been how approachable and accomodating they are, be it for photos, signing stuff or a quick chat.

Fantastic ambassadors for the sport, the club and the city.

Keep up the great work on and off the field.

Good points and a reflection of the team culture. One of the things that is truly noticeable on the field is that these players are playing for one another and get on tremendously well. In the past there have been players that stood out for the opposite reasons and they didn't last.
Ricki etc have recruited well, but it seems personality and ability to fit in under the Phoenix guidelines is as important as footballing ability.

Totally agree. I went to the training session when they were in Palmy North and afterwards the whole squad and Ricki stayed around for photo's and autographs. They were all so approachable and nothing was any trouble. Standout players for me were Tim Brown and Daniel. Genuinely seemed interested in talking to the fans and went out of their way.

The same goes for the big boss. I sent Terry an email on monday just saying how much he's done for Wgtn and how much I'm loving the Phoenix and he sent me a brief note back thanking me for my support even tho must have been swamped with congratulations that day. thats class

Everyone talks about how good the guys are off the field.

I guess Daniel set the bench mark....Ive' been at a function where probably in excess of 20 people came up to him while he was there and he shook hands and posed for photos etc with everyone. He did it all with good grace and a smile...even though it probably got to be a pain in the arse after a while.

On Monday outside the freyberg pool the whole team were waiting. A few older ladies came up and congratulated them and wished them well for Sydney...they all were amazingly polite and friendly...no egos or anything. As we left some other fans were getting everyones signatures....

great attitude - yet another reason to be proud of the team!!

I've often wondered if these guys are just so awesome because they realise how big rugby is in NZ and want football to be successful.

I've then also wondered what would happen if football becomes massive in NZ - would the players become like many of the spoilt All Blacks?

Regardless, I too love their approachability and friendliness. It was wonderful meeting the guys today and they were very obliging with photos/autographs and receiving a brief message of support.

Ricki even said he remembered me when I reminded him my son and I had bumped into him on the waterfront last November.

Pasty also claimed to remember when I reminded him about last November and signing autographs for me and my son.

Really good guys and I wish my son could have been there today. There is always next time.

I've bumped into the players on a few occasions and also had the good fortune of sharing a flight with them once.

I have, without exception, found them to be a very polite and obliging group of young men. They are always more than happy to pose for a photo or sign a memento. They are great ambassadors for the club and city.

An absolute pleasure to support !!!

Just read the DomPost sports lift-out article on Tim Brown doing his bit to develop football at Well Coll and visiting his ex-primary school.

Another example of how whucking good our lads are and how they give back to the community.

Fantastic.

We aren't the only ones that think the 'Nix are great on and off the field.

The manager at QANTAS yesterday told me as we were waiting for the players:

"The players are really approachable and open to photos and autographs and things so if you are interested...."

Of course I'd already found that out the previous day but it just shows that their behaviour isn't going unnoticed by the general public either.

Just don't approach two of them from - ahem - behind

NRL players seem to have a lot more fun off the field though.

Tony Pignata is also very approachable. In Tianjin pre-season he made a point of coming over and saying hello to our small band of China based Phoenix fans, closely followed by Ricki Herbert, Leo Bertos and Ben Sigmund.

That's bloody awesome

Apparently the "Phoenix family" are awesome.

I heard 2nd hand (wasn't invited) that at the Awards night Ifill said that if a TXT goes out from a player asking for a hand with something then within an hour a whole bunch of people will have turned up to help

yeah even when they're trollyed off their face at 4am in the morning in Maya they were bloody good value! Durante can bust some pretty mean dance moves. Did see one of them up to something a bit dodgy but I'm not going to go naming names because could have pretty bad personal implications for the person involved. Might have to hold out for some $$$ from the media :P hahaha

+1 to that, bumped into the lads at Ponderosa after the last match, Daniel and Dura actually came over to me to say hi rather than vice versa! The Newcastle lads seemed a little sombre though...

I would like to extend on this...

Paul Ifill posts a Facebook message saying:

"anybody need tickets for the game today please message me b4 4pm as i have some spare"

I private message him as I needed a few for some friends then he replies an hour later saying:

"yes mate il leave 2 in your name at the sfs mate"

This is on match day before the biggest game in the "Nix's history and still can do this for a fan.

Absolute class.

It has been said - FAMILY - It is a culture at the club that is encouraged at all levels and the response has been brilliant. Everyone to do with the Phoenix, team, admin, fans, all have been a good example. It's as if we are all working together for the common cause of making this club work and be as successful as it can.

It makes me proud when I read various stories such as previous to this response. Others too have encountered the "family" experience too. At practices you can meet the players before and after it and chat about pretty much anything. We fans hold our various heros up there in high esteme and the players hold the fans up there too.

We try and not be too intrusive in their private lives yet the players seem only too happy to have a quick chat when spotted in the street. It's a culture that so many other teams would love to have but haven't and one that makes the Phoenix such a special organisation. All those whom attend the games whenever, I wonder what they would be doing with their time if the Nix did not exist. A whole group of strangers all drawn together.

It's been a brilliant 3 years so far, the team have continued to improve and move forward, the fan base has grown and matured, even this very site has progressed from strength to strength in it determination to promote all that is good about the Phoenix, football and fandom in general.

A time of alleged recession, so much negativity in our society, yet this very club has been a huge positive in all walks of life. We eagerly await the start of the next season as soon as the current one finishes. It's smashed attendence records galore. Long may it continue and long may all of you and the team continue to progress.

Rant over.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
