"Craig Foster, your views regarding the Phoenix?  Do they need to mature"?

he's just one guy with a very particular view on how football is played.  There's very little point bothering with him, he's never going to be convinced by how we play.  He's a guy who would rather teams played more "attractive" football and lose - a completely indefensible position in professional sport.

But we probably need to be big enough to admit that even when we're ticking over well we're never going to be flavour of the month in an aesthetic sense.  We have a good defence but we're pretty limited in terms of how we attack.

Compared to others in the league,I think we play a pretty good style of football. We particularly have that potential this season more than ever. We showed in week one we are going to (and can) play that way too. Ignoring week 2,which was a joke. The game against Brisbane admittedly wasn't great after the first half hour however.

I think, as a fanbase in general, we could do with being a little (a lot) less precious.

Is Craig Foster a douche? Yes. Is he right? Possibly. Does it matter? Not one bit.

Compared to who I guess is the question?  I think our style must rank pretty low but you have to put that in the context of results too.  It's a bit ugly but pretty effective.  You compare that to say Wanderers who are quite attractive but pretty ineffective.  Foster is so one note he'll never acknowledge any of this which makes him look pretty stupid.

There are definitely teams who play "worse" football than us, because we beat them!  Objectively though a lot of our play is pretty rudimentary (although oddly from time to time we can really turn it on).

However, I do often wonder, would we be as successful playing this way if we didn't have the home factor?  Are our away results a truer reflection of our actual play and the great results we get at home based more on the difficulty of travelling to NZ?  I don't know the answer but I do wonder sometimes...

Hard to know because of the double effect of us playing at home and Aussies with the away difficulties and us playing away with the away difficulties and the Aussies at home.
The only way we can truly judge our ability is in either with both teams simultaneously playing at home while each other with superimposed entanglement or by playing in the middle of the Tasman sea at a point equidistant between the two teams.
Sorry I should have left this in the other thread.

The same 'home game' argument could be used for Perth, they tend to be woeful to watch a lot of the time, but more often than not get points at home.

We will need to wait to see more of the away games before we can judge any overall improvement in 'attractive football', but I am happy with taking points right now.

An easier way would be to fly both teams to the other side of the world and play at a neutral ground. That way both are affected by travel. ;).

Yes, but you need to mke the distances even so every game would have to be played at a different neutral venue equidistant from each team..

I'm with JD on this. Australian media is generally going to focus on Australian teams, on top of this Foster favours a certain way of playing. It is a bit annoying getting rubbished across the ditch before a ball has been kicked in anger and then the surprise when we are competitive, it's just lazy journalism and blinkeredness from Australian media.

The fact I agree is irrelevant. He is entitled to his opinion.
