Anyone else here what the commentators said about him coming back?

It seems almost certain now that we will have him for 8-9 games now. Our attack will be devastating, up there with perhaps even GCU (Or am I being too optimistic?). Does anyone know any other information about this or is this the first we have heard about it?

Well I think it was always going to be a plan to try get him again. It's just such a shame it can only be for a guest stint. Even though he is the man, our midfield is going to be so over loaded.

Yeah I don't know who we will drop. Daniel or a DM?

Remember Caceres will be there too. Caceres > Daniel?

I suppose we could do 3-5-2 if it was at home. With Durante, Sigmund and McKain at the back, Brown, Bertos, Fred, Daniel and Caceres in the middle and Ifill and Greenacre up front. Very offensive though.

Let's not get carried away here. We haven't even seen Caceres play for the nix yet. Plus the commentators said there was an offer on the table for Fred, not that he'd sign.

We'd score more than Shane Smeltz in a brothel... but can't see it happening due to the defensive frailties

I was under the impression that we had worked out a deal and that we were just deciding on when he was coming not if.

Why would we have to decide when he was coming? Surely we would say now please and for as long as you can.

Or how about

                      Paston

            Siggy            McKain

                        Brown

  Lia                      Fred                   Daniel

                        Caceres

  Bertos             Greenacre           Ifill
You know we belong together...

Because it's a set length of guest stint and it needs to be after MLS finishes (or DC United's partitipation finishes).

Yea, which wouldn't make it our decision. That'd make it his / DC United's decision.

Anyway, not important. Hope we can get him. I'm assuming nothing is confirmed or we'd know about it, so I'm not going to let myself get too excited yet...

Obviously nothing is confirmed. But he came last time, it's a nice thought!

Do we need him back, we have a whole bunch of attacking midfielders in the team and squad, and only room on the bench for 3 outfield players, how do we fit them all in and give them all game time?

Can we just bugger off Diego and Caceres and get him full time?

You don't.
You find better players and the lesser players don't play.
It's the fact of life in any sport where you play to win, not to make sure they all get game time

and yes, Fred would definietly fit in our midfield. I cant wait to see how he would work with Ifill

True, but they also need oppurtunities to prove themselves with game time. This was one of the reasons used to justify the Phoenix not having a full squad at the beginning of the season. Having no youth team means fringe players 21,22, and 23 weren't going to pick up game time there, therefore were deemed surplus to requirements.

As has been pointed out before, the rule restricting the number of subs named for matchday doesn't give Ricki much room for experimentation. He can't name a few extra guys in the squad and give them a run if the match situation allows. Admittedly this applies to all teams, but they have youth squads.

We do seem to have an overload in midfield. On one hand it's good to have depth, but is having Daniel, Diego, Caceres, Bertos, Barbarouses, Hearfield and now possibly Fred too much of a good thing? Fred aside, there isn't that much of a difference in level between the rest.
They've all proven that they are comfortably A-League level, without setting the world alight on a consistent basis. wolfman2009-09-14 03:39:39

Yep. I was implying that the rule mainly applies to the Nix. It's a fact a whole bunch will not play. Just re-iterates the need for not neccesarily a youth team but a reserve team in NZFC

How many chances has he had to prove himself in the first team, not many, when he did get his chance last year I remember him scoring and playing well enough to show he can do a job in the A League, this lack of a reserve and/or youth team, and not being able to name 5 or 7 subs means that our younger players don't get a look in at first team level and therefor don't get a chance to show if they are good enough of not, other than the odd 10 or 15 mins here and there.

When he played against Adelaide last year he got absolutely caned by Ogre-novski who dominated him all day. He finshed off a great move by the team, but that doesn't make him better than what we've got.
Cue the Costa lovers.

Not fussed about him as a player one way or another, would just like to see our young guys get a decent crak of the whip before we write them off as not good enough.  As you say he did score a good goal in that game, signs there is something there that could be of use to the team at the moment who is struggling to finish its chances?

Would be great to see Fred back, he has the ability to give us creative avenues in the middle of the park which at the moment is more of a no mans land for us.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

For those interested, DC  united final regular season game is on Oct 24.  Currently they are in a playoff position, but the table is pretty tight at the mo. http://www.dcunited.com/news-stats/standings

Sorry if I have got players on the wrong side, can't remember who plays left and right.

Bench:

Durante (I do like him, just does not fit in with my game plan)
Brown (excellent game vs Melb, but again not enough of an attacking player for me)
Caceres
Crowther (with his height I'd have him forward for set plays if he came on).
