What a waste of an afternoon.

Felipe has posted the team.. Rojas looked okay for his 15 minutes til he took a knock. didn't seem to serious. Daniel came on didn't do much to spark things. Mulligan i thought played well in a DM postion. I can't actually remember much else other than Durantee having a diving header which the keeper saved with his face. Greenaces had a few hits. I think he will be trumphs up when the season begins.

Mainland didn't really offer much in attack nor defence, we were just poor. lacked creativity and often taking one touch to many.

The most exciting part was when Chris Greenacre came off the subs bench, jumped the wall next to where we were standing and headed to the bushes for a piss. We had a few words with him. Says he loves NZ, loves the Phoenix and is looking forward to playing

Will upload some vids on to youtube, zoom isnt great on phone though

ALOT to do before winning the a-league this year.

Costa was our best player in the 1st half, diego didnt do anything, defence was pretty tidy but missed Mckain for some direction, Crowther wasnt tested so can't judge him, Daniel looked good in patches, Siggy's fight was the highlight - Mulligan had one of his better games, distributed well.
Greenacre looked energetic and showed promise, nice volley which the keeper saved well.

Players needed their long sprigs, were sliding all over the show, was freezing - crowd of 4000.

Mully is actually a really good midfielder. Played heaps of English League games there. Hopefully he will be used there to good effect

What a miserable game.  Definitely some positives, but for the five chaps I took along (four of whom are extremely ignorant with regards to football, the other who doesn't really support the phoenix) it was a snorefest.  We passed far too much when we should have tried to split open their defence.  Mainland missed an open goal in the first half, maybe if they'd scored it would've sparked the phoenix to life.  Siggy got shoved by a player, but instead of just shoving him and leaving it at that he gave him a swipe to the head (which was great).

Player ratings:
Crowther - 6 - Had literally nothing to do but tidied up when necessary.
Lia - 7 - Was solid and passed around well.
Muscat - 7 - " "
Sigmund - 7 - " " + got a good swing in during the fight.
Durante - 7 - Was solid and would've clinched a win but for the ugly mug of Mainland's goalkeeper.
Diego - 7 - Look forward to seeing him play during the season, looked good.
Mulligan - 8.45 - Very solid in the midfield.  Distributed well and put in some vicious tackles that other refs could easily have pulled him up for.
Hearfield - 8 - Doing well up the wing and consistently beating the man, working well with Lia and Mulligan.
Rojas - 6 - Did very little.  Though he was involved in a nice play down the wing involving numerous backheels.
Barbarouses - 6 - Tried and ran hard but didn't have much ball and couldn't pull off one shot (that I saw).
Lochhead - 5 - Did very little, having said that, had very little to do.
Greenacre - 6 - Held the ball up reasonably well, had a gorgeous volley that the keeper tipped out for a corner.
Brown - 5 - Wasn't very involved but didn't play bad at all.

Think that's everybody.  Greenacre isn't very big though.  Was talked about as a targetman and all but unless the crosses are pretty good and he can get off his marker then he'll have trouble in the air.

Where was he talked of as a targetman ?

EVerything I've seen says we're looking for a more target type player to compliment him.

How's my driving? - Whine here

In that case, then, I'm happy to have misread whatever was written.  I thought he was meant to be one of two targetmen and due to that false information was justifiably worried upon seeing him.

As an aside, I don't think it was mentioned, Greenacre's leg was heavily strapped but he appeared to be absolutely fine on it.

Brown should be dropped and made to earn his spot as opposed to rely on reputation.  McKain and Mulligan playing defensive midfield together would be great.  We obviously don't want to have too defensive-minded a team but those two could do very well together.

just got back from the game, driven back to timaru.
to be honest wasnt worth the drive... absolutely sh*t performance.
lets be honest, this was a marketing game, it was for the fans to build a bigger fan base, yet I bet it would have turned off atleast half the people there off the phoenix for life. and as for mainland. they played about 6 defenders, we had one striker. of course we were not going to score... if you want the fans to enjoy it then mke it an exciting match, this was not a competiton match, no points were involved.

but in saying that there were positives. mully was the best player on the field for the nix.
here are my ratings
CROWTHER: 5, did nothing wrong, didnt have to do anything
MUSCAT: 6, did his job, supplied well.
SIGGY: 7, strong, and nice tussle
DURA: 6.5, good, but forced a few strange errors, that would cost us
LIA: 6, Im not entirely convinced he is a defender.
ROJAS: 5, average ae, was expecting more, very small and got injured
DIEGO, 6: good first half rubbish second half.
MULLIGAN: 8, hold his position got in space when needed and provided well. defently not a right back
HEARFIELD: 7.5, strong player, needs to release earlier
COSTA: 7, didnt do anything wrong. chases well, and very speedy
DANIEL: 7, possible could find the players better. some stray passes, but liked it when he linked with diego. better player than last season.
LOCHEAD: 6, didnt do anything wrong, did his job for the time he was there.

I think thats it, but I would have liked to have seen costa and greenacre, I do think they could work together and I dont think they are too alike. they should have been played at the same time today.

well Hearfield will need to pull his head in when season proper starts
two footed flying stomps masquerading as a tackle = straight red
it was a shocker

from memory he "headbutted" some guy last year

cool it down, settle down, settle down.

Mainland missed an open goal after say 10-12 minutes. awful miss

Greenacre looked alright but Costa looked most lively IMO
Mulligan, Sigmund, Durante solid as, and nice to see Lia back he went good.

but as far as making chances in front of goal it was disappointing I feel...
crossing was uniformly poor really.

still good to see them down here
roll on the Jan game

I feel like if Diego doesn't happen to fire we will probably struggle to create chances - though I suppose Leo didn't do too badly last year. I fear we'll have the same problem, however, which is good defence but very poor attack most games.

Nice to hear Mully is showing a bit of heart.

Surely you cant rate people that high, we drew with a mainland selection team!!

Mulligan played well.

Diego wore red boots.
Costa wore orange boots.

Hearfield was a bit dirty, but also had a nice way of wrong-footing the opposition and putting them totally off-balance.

Overall quite boring though.
Didn't meet any other fever people there :-(

The Phoenix completely dominated, virtually camped in the oppositions half.  Mainland could only muster feeble 'counterattacks'.  Even though we didn't score we passed it round them, making them run and looked completely in control.
