Practice headers and practice shooting from distances ranging from 2 feet to 25 yards.

practice playing low diagonal balls forward for Costa, instead of high balls

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Practice clearing the f*cking ball from the penalty area, the number of times they played touchy feeley and ended up giving it back to unmarked Adelaide players was immensely frustrating.

What does interest me is at practices they usually spend most of the time playing the ball on the ground, yet as soon as they take to the pitch in a game, the rules go out of the window.

Practice crosses, headers, and shots from outside the box.

These seem to be the areas we are lacking in.

Tim is about the only Phoenix player who reliably wins headers.  He's not that accurate, but counting on the likes of Vince Lia to jump highest sounds like a recipe for even more frustration.

no. Costa will be dropped next week because Greenacre is coming back in. No point.

Greenacre isn't confirmed to be coming in and they're hoping the 9th he'll be back.. it would be nice to have him  at new years though

Greenacre too would benefit from diagonal along the ground passes.

Don't let McKain long ball it ever again

Great defender but his distribution makes me cringe sometimes. He is great on the ball though.

Dash it all!  I am somewhat miffed that we do seem to resort to long balls up the field, mostly from. within our own half.  Just trying to recall those luvvly 6-0 and 3-0 games a while back and if there was more on the ground, short passing going on there.

Don't get me wrong  there have been some very good cross field passes into space on the opposite wing when we have been up in attack but the long pass up field seems to be a standard procedure at the moment.

OK my rant over.

Why not go the whole hog and teach Tony Lochhead how to cross a ball as well

Besides, Greenacre gets 90% of the balls pumped up to him at head height and above so why can't Costa??

Some anorak stats on headers this season, obviously not 100% accurate since they are compiled from my hastily scribbled 'incident reports' during each game (yeah, pathetic I know).

Headed goals: 5 (Greenacre 2, Brown 2, Sigmund 1). Only Sigmund's was from a setpiece.

Unsuccessful headers: 30. Of these, 22 were off target, 8 on target. 17 misses were from open play, 13 from setpieces.

Chief offenders have been Greenacre and Brown, 6 misses each, and Lia, Sigmund and Durante, 3 misses each.

Draw your own conclusions, but for me I would say it's obvious that the conversion rate is pretty average overall, and extremely poor from setpieces.

I have yet to see them practice set pieces at the practices I've attended. Wonder why not to be honest. I must ask Ricki that one.
