But one thing they didn’t have on their bingo card was their right back suddenly being at the centre of a social media-driven online phenomenon shortly after arriving in Florida.
Tim Payne now has a little over 4 million followers on Instagram, up from just over 4000 a week ago.
And get behind them they did – to the point where the Wellington Phoenix defender now has more Instagram followers than the All Blacks (2.8m), Kane Williamson (3.3m) and many more besides.
He has also become a hot topic beyond the photo-sharing platform, with the story being picked up by media across the globe as the build-up to the World Cup intensifies.
Payne has taken the potentially mind-blowing change to his status in his stride.
He could be set to meet El Scarso – real name Valen Scarsini – this week. Scarsini revealed to his followers that he would be flying US to watch the All Whites play Haiti in their first World Cup warm-up friendly in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday (kickoff 12pm Wednesday NZ time), hoping to meet Payne in person, though it is understood nothing formal has been arranged by New Zealand Football.
Scarsini also toasted Payne reaching four million followers by holding up four glasses of wine, in a photo he shared on Instagram, to which the 32-year-old replied: “Trying to figure out how you would (potentially) do five”.
The Payne phenomenom is likely to lead to there being greater interest in the All Whites’ World Cup campaign than there would have been otherwise and Bazeley has already heard plenty of jokes about what it could mean for him if he goes with someone else at right back.
But he had a smart response when asked if that would lead to added pressure: “He’s got so many followers, but there’s five million people in New Zealand – that’s more than he’s got.
