seems so. He's doing all the talking. This lad must be good.

Wow. If he's agent to NZ players you'd think he'd shut the f**k up and not piss off The Phoenix, and the Phoenix and All Whites manager if he wants them to get a fair go.

He's either not an agent or f**king dim.

Glad for the kid, just a shame about the situation at the club atm. Hope he doesn't get labeled a Kean signing by the fans, he would have to be the next Messi to get that stink off him.

should change the title to Tim "the-one-that-got-away" Payne...or something funnier...

Tim "what's my number" Payne?

Auckland will rise once more

How long has Sacred Heart been "New Zealand's top football school"? Other than Payne who else have they produced of real quality?
Good luck to the lad though. I hope he excels at Blackburn.

Its no longer a problem.

This.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

OK, I guess it's like saying Man City are the best team in England because thy're currently top of the EPL. I would have thought the mantel of "New Zealand's top football school" would need a bit of history. Mind you, they probably got that quote in the article from Danny Hay who is the coach there.Toffeeman2011-11-28 11:35:10

I think it's a little unfair on Hay to have his teams result taken away. Sacred Heart has been on the up for a while now and that has a lot to do with Hay.

I'd say the win is a reflection of this and also better player recruitment.

How do schools recruit? I went to school to gain an education, not chase a football round a park.

Three for me, and two for them.

Some students want to win titles. They go to certain schools that will give them that opportunity.

Sacred Heart is a private school, so I'm guessing scholarships

Why not play club football then? If i was job hunting i wouldn't look at a place and think "I wonder how many football titles i can win here".

Isn't it that some schools basically run academy style programmes, training every day, before school etc. which most schools can't afford to implement. Kids know this and get into these schools when they probably couldn't afford to go there or the school works around eligibility issues. Even at HVHS about a decade ago when we were dominating national basketball, we had an excellent coaching setup and a kid from Nelson came across for a year to be involved in that.

For these kids, they are looking at getting the best sporting education they can.

Most recruiting for sports scholarships also has an academic success component to it. Fail at school, loose your scholarship. They also tend to be at the private schools (my schools 1st XV had 14 players on scholarship, there were also 4 in the 2nd XV) so the money is easier to source for these kinds of development programs.

Its no longer a problem.

I would think Mount Albert Grammer with Fallon's acadamy would probably lay claim in recent years to being most succesful school.

Note: I have absolutely no evidence to actually back that claim up!!!!
over 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
MAGS traditionally probaly have been, but there is more competition now and alternative programmes.

The fact that kids are training more, getting coached by former professionals etc etc can only help our development and hopefully see more players like Payne come to the fore.

To be honest Buffy I'm surprised you don't know more about schools who recruit because Auckland is rife with it. More schools there recruit than other areas from what I've heard.

To be honest anything i know about school football i've only been made aware of since i have left, and seen the effect it can have on students who i have played senior football with. Only then did i realize how important sport (in particular football) was to certain schools and the lengths some take to get or keep their students playing for the 1st XI or XV or whatever sport concerns them.

Don't mean to keep banging this drum but during my 5 college years i couldn't of cared less about what school had the best football team or who were favourites for the nationals etc etc. I went to get decent grades and a proper education because that is what school is for. If i wanted to play football i played for my club, like normal people do.

Three for me, and two for them.

My school was sh*t, but if I was lucky enough to be asked to attend a school with a decent football program I would have gone in a heart beat. TBF my school probably wasn't exactly flash in the academic department either but I did okay.

Fuck this stupid game

The only reason MAGS is good is because Kevin Fallon goes around offering scholarships to the best youth players in NZ inviting them to come play for his team, not because hes a good coach. If he was a decent youth team he would be doing NZU17s or Coaching the youth teams for Auckland City or Waitakere. The Fact that Sacred Heart won School Nationals this year is a complete joke. A decent school would be Tauranga Boys College because they dont board students. MAGS, AGS, Sacred heart, Hami Boys, Napier Boys, Palmy Boys, West Lake etc.. All Board footballers from other regions and can afford to give away scholarships. James Pamment and Paul Probert have done a class job with them over the years considering how limted they are for players in the region. AS FOR TIM PAYNE. Sure he will sign for blackburn.. doesnt mean hel be playing in the EPL. Hes not that good. Hel be playing in the youth team. To go from NZ to ENG is a massive leap and tbh i doubt he will last. He'l probably end up like michael built or cameron lindsay

I can't see what the problem is. If you want to improve your football and your education and there is a school out there that can do both, why not take advantage. Auckland Grammar and MAGS have been doing it for years.

Thats not very nice or accurate as SH beat AGGS in the semi 3-2 with a screamer goal from Tim that no goalie wouldve saved, absolute rocket. Then AGGS went on to beat MAGS in playoff for 3rd so was some serious ammo in the mix then 1 week later SacredHeart beat MAGS for Akld KO final 3-2 when were down 1-0 after 1 minute.Sacred Heart had 3 x NZU17 boys including the boy who scored first hat-trick for NZ male at a FIFA WCup so not fair to bag them then they have one of the best age group defenders as well.

For an academy set up with the Phoenix, they will have to partner with a high school to get promising players down here. Its probably too late picking them up after high school.

Improve your football under Fallon?

Waikato schools can oly offer 1 -2  scholarships per team because of WaiBOP rules.

Rotorua Boys High killed the system by having a 1st 15 made up of all outside players a few years back. If you bring in a player from outside your region and have a scholarship player already in your team they are not allowed to play for the top team.

They have a stand down period of a year before they can (or something similar), schilarships are pretty much a thing of the past. (in a squad of 22 rguby you are only allowed 2 total, 16 in football i believe 1)

The move was made to ensure waikato's best talent gets used first.

Happy to be corrected on this if wrong.

I did'nt mention Fallon. Auckland Grammar have always had good coaches. Even an ex AW principle.

Not the final, they progressed to the semi final. We need to beat the winner of Fulham v Burnley to make the final. Hoping Burnley wins, derby game & chance for at least 1 kiwi to be in the final.

Especially with Cameron Howieson playing for Burnley, there would be 2 kiwis in the semi finals

Apparently Bill Tuiloma (NZ u-17's) is also signing for Burnley according to postings under "Young Kiwis in UK" thread: http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8428&PN=13
and other sources I've read.

So possibly three Kiwis in the semis of the FA Youth Cup!!!

I have yet to see anything confirming this Tuiloma thing.
