I saw the Adelaide game. I missed the first 20 minutes.

What impressed me was:

1) The noise of the fans. You could here them quite easily and clearly. The singing was good and fairly consistent.

2) Although we are only really using one side of the stadium, it looks bloody good to see so many there!

Not so impressive:

1) The amount of free kicks given away for stupid things, late tackles, pushing etc

2) The performance of the Refee and his linesmen. They made it quite obvious who they were backing. All I want, is for a balanced performance. Sure we should get nailed when we break the rules, but so too should the opposition.

3) Fred DeJong - He seemed to enjoy any opportunity to take a pop at the phoenix & the Phoenix players. Well Fred, you hardly set the world alight as a player yourself. Overated would be a fair assessment of you. You're not jealous because the AUCKLAND KINGZ & KNIGHTS failed are you??

That's a little harsh.  In an era when very few New Zealanders played overseas, he spent 3 years in Holland with Fortuna Sittard.  Plus a good number of years playing in the NSL.

He was still a more than decent striker for the Kingz at 35-36 in the A-League's predecessor.

I think Fred is prone to negativity, but seeing as he's actually Hamilton born and played such a decent time overseas I suspect his negativity has nothing to do with the clubs previously mentioned.  He laid in to the Knights much more than he ever has the Phoenix.

The truth was that on Saturday we were second best for most of the game, he wouldn't have hidden that.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Good call HN.

I find that Freddy is fairly astute when commentating and understands the game very well, it's just his complete lack of personality which makes me cringe.

Like HN says, Fred was a much better striker than most and would easily have done the business in the A League. He was a strong target man with excellent control. I reckon his comments are pretty well balanced. Try listening to the Aussie commentators if you want a comparison.

That's probably a fairer assessment on Fred, the rest of the stuff seemed fair to me

Its probably the only time Fred has made sense on his commentary as I usually rank him with Muzza Mexted. HN was right, we were 2nd best for most of the game...

But Mexted always comes out with a new word every game and at least one "I've put my foot in my mouth " comment. He's on TV as the comedy sidekick, not because he was a very successful All Black Captain.

"he spent 3 years in Holland with Fortuna Sittard" And they are? I played for Tararua United too but that doesn't mean anything either. To be fair though upon reflection maybe I was a bit harsh.

I'm just sick of evrone outside of Wellington trying cheap shops. It's like they want to see the phoenix fail. Well the news is, The Phoenix wont. On the field they have shown to be competitive. I have yet to see a head drop when we go behind. Even when we were 3-0 down, I had the feling that there was the possibility of a miracle come-back. Ok, it didn't happen but then we didtn't get a goal scoring hiding either!

When will some media personalities realise that  the club AND it's fans are determined to make a success of it and will continually build to protect our future. We don't want to be wooden spoonists. If we finish there, I don't care i will still be going to the games. I am proud of this club and I am proud of my fellow fans.

My two favourites from Mex were......

"The Hore always scores" and "I bet he's not the first player to score lying on his back"

I like Fred - calls it as it is and he has a good history and record in football for a kiwi.  Lets not knock those that are generally showing support and getting us plenty of exposure.  He hardly sl*gged us - just expressed what many of us know and thats that we gave away far too much possession and that we were fairly lucky to get a draw against Adelaide.

But we're also gaining a strong reputation of a never say die attitude and a fair amount of unpredictability.....

Big brother is jealous  because as he sees it as baby brother  is making a success where big brother failed.

So to big brother, come and join us as we are still in the last outpost where union is the main code and its backers will defend with any tatic they can. Come join us and together we will be stronger and work towards maybe a second NZ team.
