Jiang Chen I can't even remember so won't argue with, but apart from that I'm outraged by your suggestions -

Ricardo Clarke - Never lost a game

Tony Warner - Marshalled the back four like you wouldn't believe

Totori - Was great for the lolz. Consistently

Toto - Brought the rains down in Aaaafricaaaa

I remember Warner down in Dunedin. Someone in the crowd yelled at out at Berisha "That's gotta be the worst fucking haircut I've ever seen" And Warner heard it and cracked up laughing - along with everyone else.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

You think an injury replacements job is to take up a spot on the roster?

No, it just seems the trend.

Well for Clarke it seemed pretty pointless flying him all the way from Panama to train for a couple of months.  I think that was even more pointless in that he was injury replacement for a foreign player so even if he'd done well we couldn't sign him!

And yeah, that was pointless.

Lucas Pantelis?

Signed for two years, Injured constantly, played never. That was pretty pointless wasn't it?

It's not like he was injured when we signed him. He featured as a starting player in the few pre season games he managed until he became injured.

Yeah I know, but in retrospect having a player on the books for two years who was never not injured does seem pretty pointless.
I was actually reasonably pleased when we signed him.

Top 5:

Aaron Clapham:   Only an AW replacement but never played for Nix and a bit of an AW enigma

Jimmy Downey:    A rushed Ricki signing
Benjamin Totori:    As above based on one game
 Niko Tsattalios:      As above
 Cameron Lindsay: As above
 Royce Brownlie:    As above

Notable mentions:

 Jiang Chen
 Cleberson
 Lucas Pantelis
 George
 Oscar Roberto Cornejo
 Reece Crowther
 Ricardo Clarke
 Ahmad Elrich

Nearly every rubbish signing has been a rushed last minute signing.... either a case of desperation, poor contacts, poor scouting or pressure from agents on Ricki.

Downey has to go in there for the 2 year contract alone.  Crazy stuff...

My top 5 most Pointless signings. Most useless would be completely different!

1. Roberto Cornejo - Ricki snapped him up to fill the roster and used an import spot to do so.

2. Jiang Chen - Loan deal from some shite Chinese team. Had a bowl cut.

3. Jimmy Downey - Was supposed to be the answer to the right back troubles. Couldn't even get near the bench.

4. Cameron Lindsay - Given a 3 year deal and billed as the next big thing by Ricki. What was wrong with a one year deal Ricki?

5. Benji Totori - Scores against the All Whites so Ricki signs him up! Procedes to run the ball out of play under minimal pressure.

I didn't mind signings like Lindsay and Tsattalios who were brought in to fill up the youth numbers with the hope of developing them. But wasn't Lindsay given an extension? Surely you would have known after a complete season it wasn't going to go anywhere.

Also wasn't there a rumor floating around with George that they were not entirely convinced he was actually the player they thought they had signed?

Tricky to distinguish between signings that were pointless at the time of signing, and signings that in retrospect were pointless.  Eg (at the risk of stepping outside my scope of knowledge) at the time we signed Pantelis we were screaming out for an attacking option to give us a bit of an edge, and I recall most of the reaction on here to his signing was fairly positive.  In retrospect, given the amount of time he spent on the sideline........yeah........pointless.

Lulz quote from Wiki regarding Jiang Chen:

"On August 5, 2009 he joined A-League side Wellington Phoenix on a season-long loan deal after trialling with the team.[1] On October 17, 2009 he made his debut for the Phoenix as a late substitute against North Queensland Fury.[2][3] On 29 December 2009, he was released early from his loan contract with the Phoenix. He was taken back by his Chinese team after Ricki Herbert did not hold up his end of the deal and get Jiang Chen fit and give him game time."

Royce Brownlie - I have always felt that if that shot in the very first game against Melb Vic had gone in rather than hit the post Royce would have been a different player going forward.  He certainly would be a hero for the Nix
