So following on from a comment on the match day thread about pointless signings, it got me looking for the all time players list (thanks Wikipedia). Invariably we get asked questions like 'So who is your top 5........' and after you throw out your list, a name pops up you forgot.

Can I change the thread title to include pointlessness?

Edit - too late I did.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Clarke was a human victory cigar. 4 appearances on the bench, 2 wins, 2 draws. Subbed on in the last minute of both wins. Not quite pointless, I guess.

You can but in due course you could ask things like top 5 Aussies etc...

I don't think it is fair to include Season 1 players. Or is it ?

I remember every single player on that list except Clarke. I actually had to google him.

For mine;

Tsattalios

Diego

Griffiths

Jiang Chen

Downey

Special mention: Shermy

It was actually hard to make that list. We've had a lot of pointless signings.

Also, the most pointless waste of an import spot goes to Tony Warner with competition from Alex Smith and possibly Riera.

Higgens was a big and reasonable enough Goalkeeper, What about Spider - Reece Crowther? tastey Mrs tho.

For my money:

1] Gao

2] Crowther

3] Pieman - cracking goal on debut and then what?

4] O'Dor

5] Toto

Unfair to include Clarke just because Ricki didn't know what to do with him

I'd be tempted to include Spoonley season 1. Not cause he wasn't any good, just because it was pointless to sign a third keeper after Moss and Paston. He could have been added as an injury replacement (like all the others) when Paston was injured.

P.S. I am running a complete blank on Lovemore playing for us. Was he an injury replacement?

Yeah, he actually got on the field unlike a few of those other names.

Actually the more I think about this - the more it makes it a pointless signing.

Replacement whilst AWs were playing. Subbed on for 26 mins against Sydney Rnd 26 in 2010/11. Clapham was on the bench but didn't get on.

Thanks to BT having a loud word in RH's ear - the old boy network shown up. After which RH had even less faith in ASB players stepping up.

I'll take my chance because luck is on my side or something...

Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand...

Oh Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land..."

Lovemore was actually decent when he came on, if I remember correctly.

Hence the word 'possibly'. We'll see. I think he will be an upgrade on Lia, but could easily go the other way too. Using an import spot on a journeyman Spaniard from the ASB Prem is not questionable to you?

he's only an import for this year though, so not as pointless as possibly retainling a useless as DM like Lia,

Queenslander 3x a year.

How many imports on that list of players have been successful? Its a fairly low percentage. I was really hoping for a top class midfielder but it is entirely possible we would not have been able to get one with the money available. Getting one you have at least had a good look at locally may turn out better.

Don't disagree with that. Just seemed a bit strange after looking for an import DM for months, we pick up Riera from Auckland.

Lucas Pantelis?

Signed for two years, Injured constantly, played never. That was pretty pointless wasn't it?

It's not like he was injured when we signed him. He featured as a starting player in the few pre season games he managed until he became injured.

No it has to be Ricardo Clarke - the Panamanian.  Not only did it not make sense, not only was he terrible, not only was he a 19 year old foreigner, it was also right around the time we were signing young kiwis and establishing the FSE and then we go and get a young foreign guy instead!  I would love to know the inside story behind that loan...I think Ricki said it was a favour to an agent

YES - signing him putting our national team goalkeeper who Ricki also coaches behind him, genuinely bizarre

Also Elliot - Herbert had no real intention to play a game where the ball went through central midfield and he looked a fish out of water.

I can't even recall him touching a ball in his two minutes on the park. Don't think he was around for a ASB Challenge game either. But on the whole he was pointless, apart from he never lost a match.

Enlighten me as to how an injury replacement is a pointless signing? Don't they take up a spot on the roster...that's their job (ie. Not pointless)

Well for Clarke it seemed pretty pointless flying him all the way from Panama to train for a couple of months.  I think that was even more pointless in that he was injury replacement for a foreign player so even if he'd done well we couldn't sign him!

You think an injury replacements job is to take up a spot on the roster?
