drive past every day. One pitch was grassed first and just had its first cut. 2nd pitch was grassed a month or so later.  Both looking good. Hope they do a decent job on the building. Has good potential

As a resident of Hutt City I'd like to thank the ratepayers of Wellington for funding this infrastructure for the Phoenix :)

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Turf looks superb. Don't think renovations on building finished yet . There is some kind of extension being added. Maybe a deck.

As a resident of Wellington, I'd like to give a big middle finger to the ratepayers of Hutt City for refusing to get Petone Stadium to just  the consultation phase for the Phoenix :)

As a resident of Wellington, I'd like to thank the so called NIMBYs of the southern Hutt district for bringing all their NIMBY'ness to bare so the Wellington Phoenix can remain the WELLINGTON Phoenix.

I suspect that the real reason that WelNix stopped pushing for a boutique stadium was nothing to do with NIMBYs, but was because they needed a 20 year licence to make it commercially viable and the FFA wouldn't give them one, but they didn't want to jeopardize those negotiations so instead didn't bother pushing their case for the stadium or engaging with the misinformed angry mob.

The Hutt is in the Wellington region, and the club isn't called Wellington City FC ;)

I think so too, they put it out there and just let it fizzle out with no real interaction with the community. Unfortunately they've probably burnt a few bridges (although no doubt its forgotten now), and also they left fans in the lurch as some of them were attending the meetings, etc. that the club was absent from. They handled the whole situation appallingly, can't blame the NIMBYs this time.

A more cynical person might think that they never actually intended to build a stadium, that they commisioned some pretty pictures and strung along the council and fans just so they had an extra bargaining chip to show how serious they were to the FFA.

Sorry, its not clear to me what the benefits are to the ratepayers who have coughed another half mill in a time that council rates consistently increase by more than inflation and salaries

benefit to the community is another quality football ground that the community can access just like they can all other grounds - by booking it.

Because the council needs to invest in the infrastructure it owns. Martin Luckie was a bog beforehand.  Other council grounds also need greater care and attention.

Also Wellington rates are the lowest of the cities.

Maybe Karori park is due for another re-lay.

Yes, I'd like to cross the floor on this one and join you in giving that middle finger.

Spot on. Another Gareth Morgan "shoot from the hip and don't bother to follow through" moment.

Interestingly one of the things the Phoenix touted re the Petone Stadium was open access to training fields (not fenced off) but that is not what has happened at MLP (which now looks like the exercise yard at Rimutaka Prison).

I was interested in this, so here are the rates in each city for a $500k house, and you're right (assuming P-town's is more than Wellington's which, when you consider that Q1 on their Rates FAQ is "Why are my rates so high in Porirua?", I suspect it is safe to do).

Resi Rates on a $0.5m house.
Hutt $2634.20
Wgtn $2374.01
P-town Too hard to work out/unhelpful website
Boganville $2575.40

I didn't look at commercial rates but stumbled across this which suggests Wellington's are some of the highest in New Zealand...

They're also quite a lot lower than Auckland and Christchurch.

Wellington has a large CBD for a city of 200k, because it really is a CBD for the 500k residents in the region (who are highly service orientated as there is very little manufacturing), there is no doubt that the commercial rates are subsidising the residential rates to a much larger extent than anywhere else in the country. On the other hand, the Wellington rate payers also pay for a lot of the services and events that people from the commuting cities enjoy. It's the second biggest CBD in the country, and gets the most foot traffic so you'd expect commercial rates would be second to Auckland.

If we did join as one city I wonder if rates will go up in Wellington but fall in some of the other cities in the region.

Or just go up everywhere as in Auckland...

Other than reducing the number of elected officials I don't really see the upside of a super-city. And at a regional level elected officials are relatively inexpensive.

Anyway, massively off topic.

Should build a boutique stadium there and run free express trains on the Hutt Line to the game.
