Tranzmetro were due to have no trains coming into Wellington Station all day Sunday, but after 'reminding' them about the Nix game got following positive response - ups to them I suppose...

Vicki,

To ensure that there is adequate transport to the Phoenix game we have decided to restart train services at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.  This will mean the usual train services will be operating before and after the game.

We will be amending our customer communications in the next day or so to reflect this change.

Must be a real bugger for the guys trying to upgrade the rails, but the trains really do need to be running when there's an event on at the stadium.

They should just cancel the trains Saturday night instead...

Its a nice change to see them not screwing us over again.

I think they might be more concerned with all the $$$$ they will miss out on if they are not running during a stadium event.

Why were they not going to be running? I checked a couple of weeks back as I need to get a train from Upper Hutt that day and the timetable said there were trains every half hour?

They're doing work on the tracks into Wellington Station; adding a 3rd line in for morning and evening peak, and upgrading the electrical wiring.

Good work by KiwiRail to get it all sorted.

Glad it is sorted - wasn't anything on the website as far as I could see, timetable was all intact!

I think the biggest factor is that they don't have enough buses to deal with the increased load.

Still they have come to the party and big  to them for doing that. Usually Sundays are track maintenence days.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

On a day-to-day basis, Toll ran the rails alot better than the government have.

You certainly paid for it considering the grossly inflated price that Labour paid to buy it back.

If you divide the loss made on the sale by the NZ population it works out to about $74 each.

[QUOTE]The final valuation of KiwiRail was $369 million more than half the price the Government paid for it.

The Labour government bought TranzRail from Toll on July 1 last year for $690m. A provisional valuation in the government financial statements in September 2008 put the value at $442m.

Today Transport Minister Steven Joyce said the final valuation by PriceWaterhouseCoopers was $388.29m.

A Treasury report said a fair value for KiwiRail at the purchase date would have been $369.54m.

This results in a final financial loss on acquisition of Toll NZ Ltd of $320m, the report said.

The Government has NO business running a rail network.

Having said that, good on Tranzrail for not mucking around and sorting this out for us

It may appear that way, Michael,
but if your observation is based on the frequent stoppages we've experienced recently in Wellington, that can fairly and squarely be blamed on Toll and previous owners for gross deferred maintenance, running down of rolling stock, and bleeding the rail system (and us kiwis) dry..

but thats another forum.

Happy the trains are running next Sunday.Go the Nix!

Not to mention that instead of that "dividend" of $74 each if it wasn't bought we would be paying a subsidy of a whole lot more, for a whole lot longer, to Toll to undermaintain and underinvest. Does this need to be taken "off topic"?

Yeah definitely "off topic", especially since as soon as Hard News sees this he'll be saying the Govt should be paying for turn of the century steam engines on a line that runs the length of the country.

Addicks, whether you think the Govt should be running the rail network or not you MUST concede that overpaying $320M for it was a c0ck-up, surely?!

They talked Toll down from a much higher price (Toll wanted $1bn), and the price that's been mooted is the asset valuation, as far as I gather. That doesn't really reflect what the business is worth.  And at least we're not paying subsidies to Toll in return for getting shafted.

We could have nationalised it at that lower valuation, if that's what you mean, but some folk would have got antsy

Congrats to Tranzmetro for saving all them wages that you would have paid for the upkeep of the rail network to provide Wellington Phoenix fans the opportunity to use your service to attend this vital sporting fixture!
