For clarity, can someone power rank all the candidates in order of ambitiousness from the club?

I think we're going to sign Des and/or Chris but not because of a lack of ambition, rather because of a fear of failure.
Worst case scenario the club has 3 1/2 years of existence left. We had four years to trigger the first extension, and at the time the club said that the terms were reasonable and achievable, but that was when we had four years.
We write this season off and we have 3 years left, and maybe that reasonable four year goal is suddenly a challenging three year goal. So we need to be starting the growth from this season, and we need to be playing finals football to do that.
When he left Ernie said in an interview that he could turn the team around but not quickly enough, that tells me that we need to be performing this year, we can't afford to rebuild.
So what we need is a coach who can hit the ground running and get the best from the team without any preparation. Therefore we need someone who knows the team well, and preferably knows the league. We could risk it all on an unknown who may excel, may crash, or may take time to cement their systems and get the players they need, or take the less risky option and pick someone who is already getting acceptable results.
Hence, for the risk adverse the only candidates are Buckingham, Greenacre, and perhaps Hudson.
Or a coach who would be willing to keep them both on as assistants till the end of the season?

I'm promoting Durante for Player/Coach cause its the only stupid idea not put out there (yet)

isn't that something you would normally do?
Re the complaints over Greenacre and Des I get it to a certain degree - it's low risk but also underwhelming - I think they would do a decent job but it would be great to see someone with a bit of experience as a head coach get the job - Personally I think Ramon with Greenacre and Des would be interesting.
If there are not coaches of sufficient quality available at the moment which is one of the things I have seen thrown around - then appoint Greenie and Des till the end of the season - which as a bonus would give us a chance to assess them over a larger body of work - then make the call in the off season.
the reality of the A-League means that even though there is a transfer window coming soon that a new coach will have to perform which pretty much this set of players until the end of the season anyway so may as well give it to Greenie and Des for the rest of this season unless there is an amazing candidate.

Well, of the candidate names being bandied around, Luciano Trani has been at the Nix before as Ricki's assistant, so he knows the senior players like Durante, Lia and Moss, as well as Greenacre who was a player when Trani was assistant - and he knows the A-League extremely well, having also been assistant at Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne City and Newcastle Jets. (Until checking just now, I didn't realise that Trani had been assistant at five A-League clubs. Wow! Suggests that he was kind of sort after by coaches and keen to broaden his experience.). It should be noted that Brisbane won the A-League in 2013-14 when he was assistant.
Trani will also go the extra mile, as revealed in Ben Sigmund's autobiography, and risk life and limb climbing trees to spy on the opposition training. He may have other secret agent skills up his sleeve such as disguising himself as a groundsman or a call girl to wheedle secrets out of the opposition.
Another name mentioned, Mark Rudan, knows the A-League extremely well as a player and an analyst on Fox Sports. I've always been impressed by his diagrams and tactical analysis of games. He's articulate and has a bit of charisma.and a positive personality and some head coaching experience, having won the NSW state league a few times.
Ramon will have watched a lot of Phoenix and A-League games over the years and will be pretty familiar with the league. He'll know some of the Nix players such as Roy Krishna. personally and will be familiar with how the rest play.
Another thing with Ramon, is that if Roly did pack his bags and leave in the January transfer window (or at the end of the season), Ramon would have the contacts in Spain to instantly replace him with someone decent. Rodriguez is probably missing having no Spanish-speakers in the squad any more, unlike when he arrived when there were a few, so he will enjoy having Ramon to talk to.

How did everyone's enemy go first year in transition from assistant coach to head coach at Victory? Did the fans rebel? Did the owners sack him? Did they wooden spoon it? How many times did Victory's best coach beat him?
Or did the players just step up and support him?

I only do things in gif and graph form.

I agree that Greenie is a nice guy and a great club servant and I wish him well. However the apparent flood of applications tells me we could yet make a "quantum leap" with a new coach that would get this otherwise good squad perform better than so far this year.
Noone has any idea on the quality of those 50. Think I read somewhere (was it when the Jets were looking for a coach) that they could take a quick glance at 3/4 of them and discard pretty easily.
If you're deploying this as an argument against discussing the merits of various coaches then you're sort of undermining the entire raison d'etre of this forum aren't you?
Nobody on here has any idea on most of the things that are being discussed, but the fun is in the discussion.
If we follow your logic out to its conclusion we would have to bring together the self destruct codes that Greenie, News and I built into this thing (the Cakes Apocalypse Project) and burn it to the ground.
Huh? I wasn't making any of those arguments. All I was suggesting was that the number of applicants doesn't really have much relevance to the quality of applicants.
My 2 cents on the "who should get the job" argument is this.
Greenie will be a great head coach, but he can't be the Phoenix head coach until his mates have retired from the squad. He's too close. Des is too inexperienced. Neither of them would have the gravitas that might pull a 30 year old pro from Europe or even Australia. Greenie has a bloody good network in the UK mind, so I might be over-egging that point.
Luc Trani has a similar problem. He's always been the assistant, and has previously been Ricki's assistant with a bunch of this squad. They loved him, but could they take instructions from him? I don't know. Would he pull better players here? I don't think he would.
If I was the Welnix I'd be looking for someone that carried weight with the FFA and was known in Australia. Someone that would give the Phoenix more credit in the Australian market and with Australian players. Someone who was on the FFA's ladder of national team coaches would be good, or a former Socceroo. Or, if the chequebook is out, someone from Europe who is a known name (in a positive way).
Whoever they hire has to have coaching credentials, for sure, but if it's someone who has the FFA's love as well then that will be worth it in "metrics"/"pathway"/"bringing value to the A League" terms.
We have to do what we do best. If the FFA don't like us we are probably fudgeed anyway.

It is a bit of a cat and mouse game with FFA. Us having Ernie, a respected Australian coach (not a "Scottish coach" as some unfortunate NZ journos described him once) did not prevent Gallop stirring shark ahead of the license extension talks. So while nominally they might like it if Mark Rudan got the gig it would not be a substitute for other "metrics" still being observed at the end of the first 4 years.
My 2 cents on the "who should get the job" argument is this.
Rudan
I wish people would stop banging on about Greenacres so called contacts in the UK. That line has been trotted out too many times.
Whom exactly has he enticed here in all the years he has been with the Nix?
And don't say his wife
A-Rod. Knew his coach or something.

Burgess in the NZ herald comes up with quite a compeling arguement as to why Ramon should be the new Nix coach. You have to admit his case is strong. The guy certainly knows how to coach. Auckland City were good against the Japanese team that gave Real Madrid a run for their money in the world Club final. Ramon also knows the NZ scene as well as anyone. Not sure if not having the top FIFA qualification will hold him back or if he counts as a local and can coach in the A-League with his second tier qualification
It would be a nice synergy if Ramon got the job and then Greenacre went to City. He needs to go away and get some time as head coach somewhere. Maybe if he did a good job there he would be in the running later for the Nix job
Burgess said that three overseas applicants have been short listed.
What about Ryan Nelsen?

Keep the Scottish accent please!
Pardew's reaction once he wins us the league:

We don't want our players getting Pardewed
Please God no.
What about Scott Miller? Jets weren't amazing last season, but to finish 8th in your first season of professional coaching is pretty respectful, I think.

Agreed. I think we should be able to do better than Miller even just considering candidates we already know about.

"they escaped relegation"?
Jets under Miller were dreadful
What about Ryan Nelsen?
Ryan Nelsen wont ever come home to coach, in fact I doubt he will ever coach. He has business interests in the USA as well as an American wife and family. He is very happy there and has settled there permanently.
