a great review of football here and in europe was the last item on the sports news, the ratio of nix to the rest was a little low for my liking but tv 3 are still the football option

LF1, was there a separate Nix thing earlier??

postive about the nix too.  Can't imagine what TV1 would say if they bothered to get of their a$$ and do the same thing.

TV 3 have set the bench mark for covering the Nix, and I am confident the will surpass that next season

If tv 1 make the effort i might watch their news again, but until i hear something to indicate that they give a toss, i'll be watching 3

Everyone knows there's only one team at TV1 - The Auckland blues. Last season you couldn't get Howlett's ugly mush off your tv. talk about play for the camera. The Nix on TV1 and shown in a positive light has the same chance as me being the sole winner of the 10 Million this coming Saturday night.

Considering NZ's sporting year, the Phoenix are probably the only part of 2007 Kiwi sport fans would want to remember!

Best present I've received today, Harry! Cheers mate :)

Really proud to see some of our finest helping out on Christmas to those who need it - and I mean everyone involved, not just the Phoenix. Makes me proud to call myself a Wellingtonian. If I can get one of these on youtube, I'm blogging it

ended up flicking between channels tonight and caught a pretty good season review by TV1, a bit light on the Phoenix for my liking (i suppose they are an Auckland channel of course) but to be fairly good coverage of the AW's and some good clips of an interview with Ricki H

so good on TV 1, for responding to reality - and no vietch to stuff it up with a poxy weasel-worded introduction

Poll.  What are you looking forward to most in 2008?

<!-- spacer --> What's on the top of your sporting agenda for 2008? Beijing Olympics </>League World Cup </>NRL
</>Super 14
</>Summer of cricket </>NBA finals </>Formula One </>Tennis majors </>IRB Sevens </>Other

Zero football content of course (NBA Finals FFS).  No Phoenix.  No certain European football tournament in June that will outrate the Olympics in so many ways (despite what the Telferites and Deakerites tell you).  Make this poll redundant by voting 'other'.

I like the Olympics.  But the Telferite who made this poll - any football thought would have been the last thing in their small delusional brains.

Kiwi Olympic sports = horse jumping etc.

No doubt one Telferite 'truism' will be propagated over the next few months to deceive the masses: "The Olympics begin and end with jogging events."

This kind of crap despite 2/3 of the world's Olympic ratings coming through....you guessed it....'turf billiards'!

Vote 'other' pls if the poll's still going.

Bad game plan, Tigers. Seriously, wrong tactics. Accept this friendly  advice from a long time media pro - and Nix fan.

How will TVOne know you're pissed off with their football coverage unless you tell them? Simply changing  channels is not always the answer.

For example, there's been a lot of criticism on this forum about Veitchy and his Nix "put-downs" on TVOne news segments. How do you defend that? Go on the attack. But in the right way.

When he's back on air, ring him on his morning show on Radio Sport.

Challenge what you believe is his anti-Nix attitude. Make him defend his position. But think through your argument before you make it.

Warning: don't be rude. Abuse is a waste of time and does the Nix cause no good at all. Remember, the host has a "dump" button (he can "red card" you in a second).

But, wait, there's more. Ring other Radio Sport shows. Let other hosts - and listeners - know you don't like Veitchy's attitude.

Do be supportive of people like Brendon Telfer who says a lot that's positive about the Nix and NZ football in general. Let him know you appreciate what he's doing.

Other things you can do: ring TV3 every time they run a positive Nix story. The old media refrain is they only hear the complaints. Never praise. Give them a big pat on the back when it's deserved.

Do the same for TVOne. Praise them (where applicable), but also let them know when they get it wrong.

Don't swear at the person who answers the phone. Be polite. Be concise. Make your point in a few well chosen words. Your comments will be logged at the switchboard and seen by executives at morning meetings.

If they pick up a trend - they're "pissing-off" Nix fans big time! - they'll take note. Both channels need every viewer they can get in a tight media market.

To summarise: if all the talk stays on this forum, it won't reach the media people who make the decisions.

The answer is to ring, write, use all the media outlets available to make your pro-football and pro-Nix voices heard.

Yellow Fever is very vocal at home games.

Time to channel some of that football fever and energy into the media lion's den.

Great pointers on influencing the media Scribbler. Perhaps there should be media contact list in the news section of this site to make it simple for members to give feedback on Phoenix coverage?

Here are a few email addresses of the TV newsrooms in Wellington.

Each afternoon and again in the morning the newsrooms will be looking for stories that come with good pictures - i.e YF/'nix training/community/events. Give them a heads up and tell them it'll look nice and yellow and packed full of 'newsy/sporty' action and there's a good chance they'll send along a camera crew.

And if a crew of devoted fans are doing a convoy  of cars from another city to see the 'nix in Wellington there's a story in that too, so contact your local paper/TV station and tell them why you're so passionate about it, that you're all dressed up in the gear, the car's been painted yellow...makes for a good photo.

all fair points you raise Scribbler, I've probably emailed each channel, radio sport, and the DomP 4-5 times this season, with a mix of positive and critical feedback

to be honest i hadn't thought of ringing any of them - i may do so in future - but despite my ability to refrain from abuse I'm still not the right person to ring vietch as the prospect fills me with a sense of nausea

Terrific idea about a media contact list on this site. Are you listening Hard News?

And, Harry, your idea of feeding pre-packaged stories to your local media is spot on.

Basically, reporters and editors in the media love to have gift-wrapped stories handed to them. If you've done most of the work and they can just turn up with their TV cameras, voice recorders, notebooks to record a story you've set up for them, they'll love you forever.

To state the bleeding obvious - TV channels love pictures. If you can give them a story that could make their viewers laugh or cry, they'll bite.

Remember, the wackier or more emotional the story the better.

(To take your convoy story one step further, Harry, maybe you're taking along a bunch of local cancer kids to watch the Nix play in Wellington, and also meet the players before the game. That's got 6pm "warm and fuzzy end-of-bulletin story" written all over it.)

But don't let one TV channel talk you into an "exclusive". That's their way of trying to spoil it for the other side. They might decide not to turn up at all if bigger stories crop up during the day. However, knowing the story might turn up on the opposition channel is a powerful motivator for them to do as they promised.

Tougher to play one-against-the-other with newspapers as there may be only one game - daily paper - in your town/area. But don't overlook the weekly "freebies". They may have a modest print run, but someone will read them and the idea is to keep the Nix name top of mind. Think dripping tap!

Another handy hint - if you do ring a news outlet to try and sell them on a story, find out the name and job description of the person you talk to. You might want to go back to them.

If reporters, or the editors who assign them to cover stories realise you have decent story ideas, they'll soon treat you as a "good contact" (as opposed to a pest!), someone they''re happy to hear from. (Just don't swamp them with every idea you get.)

And as the relationship grows, invite them to anything locally that's Yellow Fever or Nix related. Barbeques, pub crawls, whatever.

Even if it doesn't produce a story, you might succeed in turning some media contacts into converts.
