I see 2 links here.

1) The Phoenix have 2 English players, so there is a link.
2) Ifill and Greenacre are distinguished British visitors who are working here.

Rubbish post.  Yes they add a bit of colour (not really much atmosphere, really) but there has been massive trouble due to ethnic tensions at football matches in the past, even in Australia.  It's more than justified and more than sensible to ban foreign flags.  Good on the FFA for it.  Some people will undoubtedly whinge "oh, it's all well and good to ban Serbian flags but not English* ones", fact of the matter is it's double standards completely and the FFA can only contradict themselves so many times, they have to stay firm on at least something (like this).

*England just being an example, they've had more than their fair share of trouble.

we're not a nation of hooligans - we won't riot over a flag if thats what the powers that be are worried about George Costanza2009-08-18 16:21:54

Take a few idiots/bigots and add a bit of alcohol and see what can happen.

And it definitely needs applying in Australia so why should the Phoenix be exempt?  Answer, they shouldn't.

Taking that to an illogical conclusion, would they also ban people from wearing the shirts of international teams, other than NZ or Australia, to A League games?

from what I witnessed on sunday, the attitude of supporters was outstanding.  no agro at all.   any potential fires could maybe be put out by skantily clad cheerleaders...that'll bring the crowd back in line

I've seen the scantily clad cheerleaders at the Super 14 games and thought that they look so young.  That can't be right!  none of that for footy matches please.

just putting it out there...
Fans are most likely to be more p**ed off with having to wait 30 mins for beer than what flag someone has
FFA has a policy on flags - only NZ or Australian flags are permitted at the venue http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/site/_content/document/00000028-source.pdf
How childish. I wonder what the Race relation conciliator would make of this. Next thing you know, the FFA will want all NON A League football books burned.

Mind you, the land of convicts do have a bone to pick with Britain whereas we colonists do not.

It's nothing to do with the Union Jack per se and everything to do with a long history (still continuing in the state leagues) of violence between ethnic groups.

I'm tempted to close this, because evrytime it is explained to people something even less-informed follows it.

We try hard there HN.

Yes the Croatian and Serbian squabbles are well documented - even invading the Australian Tennis Open. Sad that they are not as tolerant as Kiwis of such things. We have our own issues for sure, but not that bad.

FFS you muppets, you can't have one rule like this for some teams and then not apply it for others, unless it is the Salary Cap and Gold Coast of course

Ok I think we all understand what's happening. It's the rules, and although I don't really agree, I do understand the reasons behind them.

The idea of a yellow-and-black Union Jack is quite cool but I doubt to have the know-how to make one and especially neither Ifill nor Greenacre will ever notice it in the Zone :)!

There are certainly some rubbish statements on this thread.

The rule is completely understandable.

Write something in the middle of the flag and call it a banner as someone suggested. Problem solved.

Good point! And if anyone takes a Union Jack to support an English player, I for one will get annoyed by it and possibly say something. Answer is to bring a New Zealand flag, or some sort of Phoenix flag.

Question: Have you wanted to bring a Brazilian flag to support our Brazilian players? Or if we signed to players from Germany, would you want to bring a German flag? I'm sure most wouldn't, and probably want bring a Union Jack because it's maybe perceived as 'cool', or have their own ties to it.

Not as bad as the Scottish league. Goalkeeper got told off for displaying the Scottish flag!

Used to get a pile of Rangers fans turn up at North Harbour whenever Northern Spirit or Central Coast came to town, just because of Ian Ferguson.  Waving Union Jacks, being cocks and absent whenever the club from their adopted homeleand was playing.

Black and Yellow stripes are the only flags you need until November 14th.

The Millwall flag o' St. George was up for the whole game in support of Paul Ifill.

Only problem a bit of verbal from a "raving iron" supporter.
