Union Jack flag

Long story short. Went to a party a few months back. It was a UK-theme party and got drunk. There were Union Jacks around and I nicked one. Took it home.

When we signed two new English players I told myself: "wow- finally I can put that flag to use!!".
So I took it to the stadium. Kept it in my pocket hoping that Greenacre or Ifill gave me a chance to wave it.
Ifill scored, so I waved it and was real happy.

Here comes a stewart: " Sorry mate, but you can't actually wave that as it is not a British event" (actual quote). I was happy and couldn't care less but he and his mate were HUGE, so decided that arguing wasn't going to get me anywhere and I put it away.

But the question remains? What kind of rule/law is that? Thought NZ was part of the Commonwealth or somethink. Thought the Queen was still the Head of State. Thought all these things yet I couldn't wave a Union Jack?

I mean, it could have been a lot worse, right? I could have had a flag with a swastika on it, or even an Aussie flag, but no it was only a Union Jack.

What's the reason behind this?

If the flag had writing over it, (eg Welcome to NZ Ifill, Greenacre"it would have been counted as a banner and been fine AFAIK.

Stick Greenacre on one side and Paul Ifill on the other.
You know we belong together...

cool, thanks guys I will do.
I still find this all too bizarre to be honest!
Anyway, I kinda asked permission to take the flag, so it's not technically stealing :)

Your better off using a St George flag, as they are both English, and not Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish.

Its a bit like flying an australian flag to represent a NZ'er.

The rule makes sense in Australia with their history of 'ethnic' clubs but here in NZ it's kind of ridiculous.

Yeah, agreed.  Rules make sense in Australia but they have to be consistent for the whole league don't they.

Edit: Bet me to it.

Speaking of rules for some and not others, I'm not complaining that the Phoenix get Aus/NZers to both not count as imports.  A bit different in a few ways though.
FFA has a policy on flags - only NZ or Australian flags are permitted at the venue http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/site/_content/document/00000028-source.pdf
So they weren't talking out of their arse. At least they were following instructions.
I really wonder if they would to the same to a St George's cross. I really think it would be cool to see a few more flags at the stadium, including Nz flags. After all we represent NZ, England, now Malta, Brazil and partly Barbados. Aussie doesn't count.

Flags make the zone look even more colourful and I reckon they are a boost to the players, cause they're mainly aimed at them!

Looks like the intent of the policy does not match the reality of the intent!  Might be different in Oz e.g. a few years ago with differnt ethnic tensions at matches but if they are there to show support for players that's got to be a positive.

Looking at the policy c) and e) are proably breached in all the matches.  And surely when the nix are winning with 10/5 minutes to go then the FZ breaches f):

comply with any terms of entry of a venue, including bag inspections, prohibited and restricted items such as flares, missiles, dangerous articles and items that have the potential to cause injury or public nuisance

(my eyes will never be the same again!)

I suggest you refer security to the Ministry of Culture and Heritage:

"It is only appropriate to fly the Union Jack where a direct link still exists with the United Kingdom or in recognition of a distinguished British visitor."

I suppose it's a Rangers flag, but still seems a bit ridiculous.

If we brought a Brazilian flag for Diego we'd get told it's not a Brazilian event and the flag taken away?

WTF?

Taking that to an illogical conclusion, would they also ban people from wearing the shirts of international teams, other than NZ or Australia, to A League games?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Maybe we should call ourselves "Melbourne Victory", cry to the FFA about never being allowed to do anything, then if we don't get our way have a silent protest in the Fever Zone!

Is that how it works KP?

It also helps if you're the competition's most successful club with the largest fan base.
