Keat opened the scoring for the U-20's with a header from a corner.  U-20's now two-nil up.

If I get another text before I leave for my game at 13:00 I'll chuck it here.

Wouldn't you expect the U 20's to win at this stage of the teams respective development?

This does not look good at all for the Phoenix.

Far too early to say - U20's should be a well oiled machine and looks like they are.

Well if you don't hav Tambo and Buncey at centr backs, people will score headers against you at corners. Duh!

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Yeah a final score would be nice But I really think it is too easy to write off the team if they lose to a very well practised team, it makes all the difference!!
The phoenix have to go through these situations win or lose, they need to know what to work on.Black Plague2007-06-17 14:16:56

u20s looked good.I sure hope we are not going to see a heap of doom and gloom merchants start screaming over the result. For me i left optimistic over what we can look forward to,given they have only come together things can only get better.

It gives ricky something to work from, there were some nice touches and some things that i sure hope they get out of the way before we start for real.

how did the phoenix players play?

what was the phoenix starting team and the under 20's team,

it was an enjoyable game with the U21's having more shots on target than the Nix (about 6 to 3), but I would say definitely played as a practise match with the Nix concentrating more on moving the ball around the field rather than scoring (or I hope that was the case) - upfront is where the flow broke down.
The game started slow, the U21's scoring twice in the first half, but the pace increased in the second half with the Nix goal being a scorcher shot scored from outside the box.

Crowd? about 1000 or so; TV3 camera was there so there may be some coverage.

but DEFINITELY need the yellowfever roar, guys - polite applause doesn't cut it.

Any reports on individual player performance?

Saw the match today. under 20's played well in 1st half. Goalkeeper was at fault for the opening goal, should have held a high when under pressure.2nd half better for the nix but a few of the better under 20 players had been sub off. Both teams not having number shirts was not great for the large crowd . Well worth the trip from Wellington though.

i have added a match report with lineups on the front page.  basically the under 20's used most players - changed about 6 at half time.  the phoenix bought on daniel, coveny, christie and lia late on.  christie went off injured with about 5 to go.

the one thing that worried me was the lack of width from the phoenix.  when lia came on he played as a right winger, but daniel came on as a half striker behind the front two.  they started with no wingers and tim brown often found himself out wide creating space.  i was gad to hear on TV3 news that he hadn't settled on tactics yet - todays were a little muddled.

still, early days - there was enough there for them to look like a good unit.

Superb review Selekta... I admire people who can watch a game and take so much out of it that they can write something of that quality.

Yes, well done Selekta.

My thoughts were. Best player Alosi, also played ok were Lockhead, Smeltz, Lee, alos Coveny & Christie were effective when they came on. Unsure about Dodd as he had to carry Old.
Smetlz definatly looked better when partnered with Coveny.

I thought Brownlie and Old were rubbish.

Also not impressed by Ferrante or Psonis.

Didnt think the crowd size was as reported, we counted and got just over 300.

Nearly forgot to add, I had a chat with Christie during the first half. He was saying they have been working mainly on fitness during these first 2 weeks, has been hard work but he's really enjoying it. Reckons fitness wont be leting them down this season and i must say they did finish strong today.

Looking forward to the game on Friday night to see how the combinations are developing as they spend more tme together.

It was great to see how well-drilled the under-20's were!  shows what a bit of time together as a unit and some quality coaching can do for a team......

I'm sure the nix will be hugely improved this friday after a few more training runs together. My biggest concern from today's game was the amount of pressure Aloisi was put under from his own players!!! He's clearly a class act but quite a few times he was receiving hospital passes with 2 or 3 players all over him when other options were available. Needs to get a bit more support and have the other midfielders providing outlets also

Dodd was probably my MOM, didn't put a foot wrong!

Can someone tell me how Keat and Henderson went. They were the standouts for me - Chris James apart - at the Oceanias. Would be keen to know if they are still improving as I think they are the next two big things in Kiwi football.

The u20's really should win as they have had alot of time together in camp.

Pheonix still have along way to go  soo this is a good build up in getting combinations.

They still have plenty of time and are looking much better than the knights franchise ever did.

I think it has already been said:

[QUOTE=Hard News]Apparantly Craig Henderson is completely running the game for the Under 20s

"Keat's effort raised the confidence of the Under 20s"

Would have liked to have seen them continue in the second half - the Under 20s attack wasn't as strong with Roddy and Brockie, but these kind of matches are inherently experimental. Although that lack of strength is also due to Draper being subbed off; he was indeed impressive and many times ran rings around the Phoenix defense.

Oh and about the Phoenix defense - it lacked communication. Dodd was very vocal, but Old was dead quiet for a Centre Back and while the Korean was a strong player, he only communicated by hand signals. That'll improve with time though.

cheers lads

keat was very effective - he gets through some work and had a technique to match anyone on the field.  he got forward well too and created problems.  he did especially well as he was outnumbered in the middle - he and cunningham had to contend with all four phoenix midfielders at times.  this did leave jenkins and roydhouse free out wide, which the younguns used to good effect.

i'd never seen cunningham play before and i was impressed.  i had heard that he was more of an attacking player, but he played quite deep and did a good job on ferrante.

henderson was excellent.  he's very quick and he retained possession well up front.  put a wicked turn in at one point that didn't quite come off.  he moved well and created a lot of space for draper.

draper... how old is the lad!?! 17 or 18 i think, but man he was something else.  good pace, excellent touch and a goal to be proud of.

brockie looked good when he came on too.  seems to have dropped a few pounds and had an extra yard of pace.  encouraging signs there too.

nightz, it's interesting what you said about training being fitness based, and i agree that they did finish the game well.  it'll be interesting to see how they go on friday after perhaps working on some team shape.  did you manage to catch up with christie after the game?  any idea of how bad the injury is?

He (Christie) was right in front of us when he got injuried. It didnt look to good, did something to his Knee. Didnt seem to be able to put any weight on it and looked in pain when he was helped off.

On Steven Old, I really liked him as player when when was at Manawatu. He showed so much promise and at that stage he was playing in the midfield. I dont why he's now played as a centre back as he clearly is'nt very good in that position, maybe thats were he played at school in the states. I really think they need to move him outta there or his playing career wont be very successful.

I ratedthe U20 Centre back, big tall lad, particularly in the first half. He was easily able to deal with the Aerial threats, although he did have his work cut out marking Coveney in the second (I'm pretty sure he stayed on . . ) He dominated the game in the same way that Dodd did for the Phoenix. I think this guy and Dodd are very similar players, so it may not be wise to have them both in the same lineup? Any thoughts? He certainyl seemed to have an impact on the game in a way that Old did not.

Sorry mate, lost me a bit with your punctuation in that one!! LOL

I figure you're trying to piont out the trend in the forums of a certain apprehension about Mr Old.

Personally I think Old can be a good player. However, I just think he needs to be a reserve for now, he's got some work to do. It'd be good to get another solid defender in, under whom Old can become a sort of "understudy". I'm sure his game will develop with time. The fact remains for me that the U20 centre back really stood out, wheras Mr Old did not. Itr seemed to me that Mr Dodd had to work extra hard to make up for Oldies "quietness".

I agree that Aloisi did dominate the midfield. But I wonder if he will have as much time against A-League opposition? Did anyone see in the video I posted how he shoved Mr Peters off the  ball so easily? See 1'44" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdc1okbQJnY . I don't expect that bigger, older A-League players (and perhaps the referees too!!) will let him do that . .

If you're talking about Phil Edgington then he's a very good player. Performs consistently up here at East Coast Bays
