surprised we bag Lia when we support the club that signed McCallister and let KB go.

Lia and Sigmund are just about our best players this season. Clearly we need higher skilled players alongside them (Ifill/Rojas) but their commitment and effort is far superior to a number of our more 'flashier' players. Lia has set up more goals than he has butchered or given away...

most matches Lia provides more than Ward and Brown and quite often Leo and Daniel too. I think you guys are too harsh on him.

I'm skeptical that Lia that provides more than Ward or Brown, Bearing in mind he has one (quite good) assisst for the season where as Brown has 4 assissts (club highest) and 6 goals.
Although perhaps we are too hard on him. At the end of the day though the level of fouls he commits to the whatever else he offers the side is poor: 36 fouls, 4 yellow cards, only phoenix player to be red carded this season, gets about half his shots on target 15 shots, 7 on. He has about as many goals and assissts in his career as another player would in  a season.
1 goal 5 assists ever in the A-league in 57 starts 81 appearences.
Question: Is that good enough to start everyweek?

It depends what his role is.  Paston has scored even less, and same with assists.  Paston out.

Indeed but he is a mid-fielder, similar to Brown, more defensive I concede but surely we can expect more from a player in his position on the park.
It would be really interesting if only the A-league collected stats for tackles and completed passes, things we can really judge a midfielder on.
And besides Paston has some saves and Lia doesn't, so really it doesn't matter who you compare him to, still seems to come up a little short.

He has had some good games for us but I think there a better players who could play his position which we could get instead. I'm reasonably happy to have him in the team but I don't think he needs to start every game.
If Muscat moves into defensive mid again we don't need him in the starting 11 anyway.

Sorry just to clarify it's Vince Lia's turn as our no good piece of sh*t performer who doesn't deserve a starting spot  is that right

You need someone like Lia in your squad. I agree that ideally it would be nice to have a midfielder of better quality but with injuries in key positions Ricki has been forced to use him and overall he has done a good job. He was certainly poor last night but the negativity about him is totally out of proportion in my view. A lot of the holding and tackling he does goes unnoticed, except when he gives away a foul whereupon the abuse starts flying.

It is interesting though how much the loss of our only true left back has caused structural problems right through the team. Ricki hasn't quite been able to get it right all season and realistically it's looking like it might be too late now.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

We'd be better off if we had either Lia or Brown But not both in the midfield, two too many defensive players (imo)

we don't have a recognised Rb either and we've struggled more because of it trying to patch that side up so when we lost Lochy it just compounded the problem even more because we still didn't know who was best suited to the rb role Hearfield,Manny,Siggie or North then Durante goes and gets a one match suspension i mean ffs ...

If Lia could;

1) Control his temper

2) Better time his tackles

3) Not attempt tackles that are always going to give away a free kick

4) Stop repeatedly trying passes beyond his passing ability

he could be an adequate player.

He has shown no development in any of the above 4 areas since he has been at the Nix - we need better.

P.S. I contrast Lia with Manny who was often also guilty of 1), 2) and 3) in previous seasons but has worked hard to address his weaknesses. Whilst not perfect of course I think he has grown hugely as a player.

Lia's great with those two armed tackles...just the no-arm tackles he's got to watch...

manny + brown = our best midfield

Agree manny is the perfect DM, Browny a box to box who scores, we just need that creative mid in behind.

Lia isn't so bad but would be behind these two

Sadly WB most of those in one form or another apply to most of the team and therein lies the problem.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
