Smith played too deep and brown was playing 3rd striker (as usual). So that left a huge hole in the middle. That's why we looked a bit better once ward came on.

Didn't think Sanchez did much wrong, odd comment. He was quite good at finding space out wide in the second half I thought.
The complete back 4 and Smith were all so deep in the 1 half.....Ricky instructions I guess ...otherwise he would have change itChopperHarris2012-03-04 21:49:12

I think hat smith could do a good job for us if Ricki allowed him to play further up the pitch

Personally I thought Smith had an excellent game today. He won a lot of possesion for us in midfield and I thought his distribution was brilliant. Fitz2012-03-04 21:57:35

Dismal stuff today but at this stage of the season 3 points all that matters.

Some wasteful passing and lots of chances passed up. Tim Brown must be the laziest player in the A-League incidentally.
He's a lot of things but lazy is not one of them.

He just lacks any sort of finesse.

I watched him for a lot of the game today and the number of times he is either jogging slowly or just stopped completely when he should be busting a gut to get back or get a tackle in is just shocking. He spent half the game almost up front! He is lazy.

I've never been to a game that was harder to watch than yesterdays - the standard of football was appalling.

We lost shape and composure - the quality of ball control and passing deteriorated and the finishing was terrible. Yes the GCU keeper made some good saves but there were about four shots he couldn't have got out of the way of if he wanted to - they were drilled straight at him.

To be fair I think we were on a hiding to nothing yesterday - we were expected, quite rightly, to win comfortably. As can happen, the harder we tried, without reward, the worse we got.

We got there in the end and the 3 points are like gold however I am concerned by our drop in form - it is quite a few games since we played well. I am also concerned by our corresponding drop in intensity over the last month.

We need to be lifting a few gears as we head in to the play-offs.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

...nice assessment WB.

Also everyone, it bears thinking about that we are actually third right now. And there is only three games to go. Smile. This is our best position at this stage of the season ever. Easily.

_IF_ we had beaten the Mariners and the Roar - and yes, I accept that's a massive if, we simply were not good enough in those two games... but, IF we had, we'd be top of the league right now on 45 points, with the Mariners on 42 and the Roar on 39.

Think about that. It means we are RIGHT in the mix. Right in amongst it.

I am just out of my head with giddy excitement when I think about the way this season has turned out compared to what I thought it was going to be like just a few weeks out from the start of the season.

We've drawn the lowest number of games in the league - three. We've lost nine.

I can think of 3 games that we have lost 0 - 1 (two to Glory and the Heart in Morwell) where we could EASILY have got a draw. If we'd drawn those games we'd be level on points with the Roar and 3 points of first with 3 to play. In the end we didn't draw those games, but it's really not much of a stretch to see us being able to progress next season to more than just third.

I'm stoked.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

I think you are going a bit over the top with the negativity even though I can see where you are coming from. It had some sloppy finishing which is an area we have been pretty good at this year. In fact I would hazard a guess that we probably have the highest conversion rate of chances to goals in the league if such a thing could be measured.

Tactically I think we were good. We tried to pressure a young team in their own half while still having the defensive line deep enough to protect against a quick player running onto a freaky long ball. It worked pretty well even though we should have got a second much earlier. It was an awkward game following an awkward week and we got the three points.

The upcoming Melbourne games will be harder. I think Heart in particular has played really good football this year. I think a top 2 finish is unlikely, even if we win all 3 games, but coming 3rd would give us up to two home games in the finals which would be awesome.

If we had a striker... oh look.  Daniel out for season, chance for an injury replacement.  Potentially even an international one.

I don't hold great hope for an inspired signing but there is a chance there.

Daniel is non visa, and its too late to sign a guest player.

I can't think of any ex A-League players floating around the state leagues who might be worth an injury replacement contract. I think we will see the season out with what we have, unless we pick up another injury.

I was initially disapointed after the game...as per the above comments but this morning reflecting on the game we did do some real good stuff. OK we blew about 23 shots on goal...some of them alarming misses. But the fact that we got ourselves into shooting positions so often shows we were doing a lot of things really well. In other games you shank a shot and it goes in, this time we were unlucky. Replay that game and we could win 5-0.
Also I really like the way we swarm on defense....lots of good work was done at the back. We are a hard team to break down. We put heaps of pressure on the guy on the ball and cut down many options. this combined with our high pressing line makes it difficult for the opposition to make play.

The big thing is we are 3rd with 3 to play....thats amazing. We should be celebrating. We are not Barcelona....we play a style that can be very effective even if it is often not pretty. If we go to Melbourne and play tight boring football and come back with 6 points I will be rapt. This is the best season we have ever had.....time to rejoice!!!!!!

Dom post gives no credit to Tyson who pulled off some instinctive, reaction saves to deny some great shoots on goal/Blew.22012-03-05 11:21:17

Guest player isn't same as injury replacement.

Yes I know. Daniel is not an import, so we cannot replace him with an import with an injury replacement contract. I can't see any Kiwi or Aussie 'international' player who is available for an injury replacement contract.

If Hard News meant international, as in an import, it would have had to been a guest stint. The window for signing guest players has finished.

and yet we came away with three poins. Seem to have the winning habit.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Yeah I was thinking that too. A few weird calls, but I'd be more than happy to have that level every week. Adelaide seemingly drew the short straw this week.

IMO

Over half of the bad decisions made by the Ref`s are due to the incompetent Lino`s on display each week
Improve the Lino`s and the Refs will look a hell of a lot better.
