be interesting to know how we've performed with Manny in mid as opposed to when he's been out or at fullback

the sooner we get lochy back the better (as long as Toto keeps his feet up - to allow Elliott to stay)

yeah the more i look at the squad, the more i just have no clue what ricki was thinking.

Things Ricki needs to do asap:
* Find a back four/three - but preferably four. Seriously just sort out who will play CB and stick to it. Give em time. Readress Hearfield as a RB. He may or may not work. Siggy may get another yellow and force himself out of contention soon anyway?
* get a working midfield. We need to play players on performance. For me, Ward gets on the ball more than Lia and Brown combined. I would look bringing Daniel and Bertos into the wings and play Elliot and ward in the middle.
* Play two strikers. Or three. Just don't isolate greeny. If ward is on the field, he does link a bit with greeny up top. We need to crete much more dynamic movement and we saw this first half against adelaide when we had Bertos, Pavlovich etc all linking up well. Maybe throw in Ward and Ifill and the team has real movement. This for me will make us much more stronger.

When Ricki drops a player like Ward, Hearfield, Pav, Mac etc; why the heck does he drop them completely out of the lineup? Sure a bench spot for these guys to fight for their place. I don't see how these guys are missing out when brown, lia etc are underperforming???

last year is done and dusted.....this year is seemingly a shambles....the lesson from last year was stability brings success...doesnt appear to be much in the way of stability at present...and i guess the irony of Kosta leaving after getting no game time then scoring in both games against us this season is almost predictable....still we are ever hopeful and perhaps this week we kick our season in the arse with a win over perth

This interesting from Paul Thomson, maybe some word leaking out of the camp?

"The vibes coming from the squad are concerning.
Herbert is seen by some as a remote figure. While he is an accomplished and persuasive spokesman for football in New Zealand, the warmth and connection he at times so powerfully conveys through the media are apparently not always evident in his dealings with the players.
A lack of unity may partly explain the disjointedness. Now more than ever the coach and the players need to put the chemistry right, settle the team, give it time to click, and get the season on track."

Apart from those comments from Thomson, I agree with most of the criticisms posted on here of Ricki's tactics and selections.  If the players aren't getting managed well and have the same baffled thoughts we have about tactics and selections then it's no wonder some of them are struggling with motivation - and with combinations, given the musical chairs.

Yet Ricki thinks it's just about the effort of the players; "Right across the board it's a chance for people to reflect where they are. We can make the changes. That's the option that we have from a coaching point of view. The ones with the desire and hunger, which we went back to last year and which worked well for us, will come through, whoever they may be."  Well it's not just about desire and hunger.  I think he's forgetting last year he bought Dadi and Caceres and found a formation that worked.

Maybe he needs to look in the mirror a bit more and take some responsibility for how he's managing the team and the players.

Still - first half vs Brisbane I thought we deserved better than to go in a goal down.  Shots on goal, possession, other stats from the game are not bad at all, and we were up against one of the top sides.  So they are capable of putting things to rights. IMHO.  But it definately seemed heads went down when the defense continued to be vulnerable.

And while I agree with others we have some limitations in pace, I also think that with Bertos, Ward and Pav all on i think we would not be too bad.  Muscat at the back and Hearfield, given some more time, with North and Dura playing central, provides enough pace and experience for the defense, if they get it right.  I agree with some others who think Hearfield was starting to sort out the RB role in his last couple of games.  He's got pace, he's keen, he's young, we've invested some time to get him up to speed in an unfamiliar role.  Give him a bit more time.

Just need to fix the dumb defending and get the midfield workrate, tracking and selections right.

Still plenty of time in the season, but you'd want to start getting it sorted pretty soon.

Go Nix, and good luck Ricki, hope you can sort it.

Ifill should be playing UP the middle with whoever. He has not got the pace to play out wide. When he joined us, he was great and scored a lot of goals.

North had a sh*t game, I don't have too much confidence in Hearfield, and just about none for Lia.

I'd also like to see him in this position. Wonder if it's something he's not comfortable with.

When he joined he said that he started out playing as either CF or striker (can't remember which) but was then out into a wide position which he has stuck with.

He looked good then, and certainly not looking comfortable at the moment.

Id like to see Ifill up as striker. He can receive the ball well, has good holding skills and will take a shot given half a chance.

As a wide midfielder he has too much ground to make up to get into a scoring position, and a lot is expected  from him defensively in tracking back. He doesnt seem too fit for now, dont see that changing. I'd rather he was further forward, and not working much on defense so that he has plenty of gas in the tank to go for goal.

Lia is the one I don't understand really. It's effectively like playing a man down because I barely ever see him touch the ball or get involved in games in any way whatsoever. Amazing that he starts week in, week out.

[QUOTE=foamy]macallister instead of pav? you have to be joking.

I don't think McCallister should start over Pav, but no Pav in the squad that travelled. I don't think Pasty's been at his best for a few weeks now, while as much as I LOVE Siggy, he's being caught out for pace to often, and has an annoying knack of playing opposition onside. I think that with Muscat at defensive mid or left back, Hearfield's our best right back option, he's not in the squad either, and North and Siggy have proven they aren't right backs. Lia "Next best thing" to quote Siggy (lol).
I think once Elliott settles we can stop crying over missing Lochhead a bit, Manny does LB fine and we're not going to play Elliott and Manny because they're quite similar midfield players, only Elliott has better passing.
Daniel in, he hasn't had a bad game for us all season when he's been given the oppotuinty, while Leo's had several dismal and a couple brilliant performances. Ifill central, if we have some one who can actually feed the strikers through the middle we'll see a bit less long ball. Also, it's the best way to fit Daniel in, because no one on the bench deserves a start more.
I think Rojas and Brown will get a run no matter what if they are on the bench, Siggy I'm not so sure about, we'll see I guess.
You know we belong together...

I agree with you Oska. As much as I love Pasty, I was watching him before the game started on Wednesday and his body language was negative like he didn't want to be there. So put Vukovich in.

Brownie must have it written into his contract that he starts every single game no matter how bad he is in.

Come on nix, 3 points please!

Brisbane's amazing 4-nil win over Adelaide last nights makes you feel a bit better about midweek, but still no excuse for a heartless display. Barbarouses is flying with this club, and hits home that RH is struggling, especially with Pav not travelling. He's gonna score a lot of goals for someone one day.
It'll be a bombs away back to direct stuff today with McAllister starting, and focus on defence with 3 defensive midfielders. Hope it works.

Watching the Roar beat Adelaide 4-0 with ten men for most of the second half had me thinking "At least we scored a goal".

Especially considering the flak they got end of last season (the great Brisbane exodus of payers), how bloody good are they?

In my opinion its all Kosta, fine job you Wellingtonians did training him up

Ridiculously, Pav is not in the squad.

I don't really get it. Pav doesn't look like scoring but he always throws his body about and is at least a good option off the bench.

Does anyone know if he's away at a youth game or something? In the squad list it doesn't say he's injured or been left out. He's just not there at all.valeo2010-11-07 14:03:28

much as I can say that I am not a big paston fan I agree he never looks that keen and certainly he doesnt boss the goal area the way you would expect a keeper to do. and yes brown either does have it in his contract or else is maybe a secret family member drom coaches in high places...lol

Bench Brown to get his hunger back as he looked lazy and slow on Wednesday night. Start Daniel and put Lia on the bench, I am a big fan but same as Brown he looked like half the player he normally does. Put three up front Ifill Bertos and Greenacre, Roja and Daniel in behind them, Elliot in front of the back four and of course WIN THE GAME!

That is all.

Don't think Brown lacks for 'hunger' to be honest - he's one of the few where I reckon you could never question his commitment. Just hasn't been the same since the injury. I think that maybe not being able to play for the All Whites at the WC affected him more than he'll admit.valeo2010-11-07 17:09:11

Agreed. Before the injury he was one of the players I was looking forward to seeing at the W.C. Would have killed it, Id say .
Anyway, fingers crossed we take the game tonight.
