I guess this signing is an indication of Rickies unhappiness with the current talent/form  in the midfield. This seems to be an ongoing theme with the Nix. We do quite well with the "rip their limbs off" bover boy type defense aka Tim Brown, but we have struggled with finding skillful creative midfielders.

Rickie had high hopes with Toto.....but does not have the luxury of chucking him in for half a dozen games to play himself in to form. With no reserve team you are expecting a miracle for someone like Toto who has played all his life in Sth America to instantly adapt to an Anglo style A-League. you would therefore question how good a signing this was.

As for Ward....at least he has some sort of record in the A-League. Players don't play Grand Finals for Melbourne if they lack talent. Whether we get anything out of him much depends if Rickie can get inside his head and remotivate him to play at a high level.

The player I really feel for is Daniel. He finished last season in fine form and he looks in good nick this year.....but he can't get a look in. He still can deliver the best ball from set pieces and open play of anyone currently at the Nix.....and shouldn't that be what its all about. Give good ball to Ifill and co and they will score.

Ward looked good when he was on considering he was with the squad for only 24 hours.

From what I saw, he came on and had a couple of bad touched, then proceeded to disappear. Critical_Lemon2010-09-05 22:10:03

Did his normal thing - 2 very good passes mixed in with 10 horrible ones. I remember one pass he slid through that was brilliant and then about a minute later he gave the ball away and it almost resulted in a goal (that was the Skorich chance)

I thought he was very hungry for his first 5 minutes, but then after that I didn't see him until about the 90th minute.. Although I did like his shot which nearly troubled Velaphi.

I rated him. He came on, looked to get involved in the play, made some poor passes, but that was mostly exacerbated by a lack of understanding between himself and the other players.

His creativity shone through and I think a kid like that who is a real box to box midfielder will bring something we've lacked.

Exactly what I thought. Was refreshing to finally see one of the midfielders go looking for the ball and trying to create things with it.

He'll do ok for us I reckon

He's only 25 and already had 20 odd games in the Championship, I think he can still improve as a player and has the potential to perform for us. If he does perform well though, the question will be if he sticks around, could be an option for the rovers or even the heart.

Holy crap, my ex - who's never watched a game of football in her life - saw Nick Ward on the TV last night and said "damn, he's the dead spit of Jake Gyllenhaal".

^^    You are Dolaras's Ex ??          :)

Seems Terry has wanted Ward for a while. Good to hear in this mornings Dom P that he is free of the injuries he had at Melbourne, hope he can be the link we need.

Think he could do a caceres type role for us this guy. as long as he aint too sloppy. doesnt sound like the kind of right personality to fit into the squad though. In terms of drinking culture...

We'll wait and see

Hope i'm completely wrong, obviously - but Ward did the same thing at Melbourne (scored a wonder strike against Sydney then went missing for several months)

Just have to remember Elrich as well

In saying that, Ward did play well and was better than Lia has ever been.

Will be happy to put my hand up and say i'm an idiot if he continues like this for the rest of the season.valeo2010-09-12 12:44:26

I think Ward is better (Despite being a QPR reject - shame as I wanted him to do well there too!) but have you noticed?

Pie man - Spectacular goal on debut then nothing

Dadi - Spectacular goal on debut then a decent performance except that penalty.

Ward - Spectaculat goal on debut and an excllent MOM performance and then ?????
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

no feverish, i haven't changed my mind since last monday

and i don't expect to,

there was a lot more to his performance than just the goal, good vision, decisive, applies himself, gets into good space etc etc
