Very good. You can play spot the forum member.

Nothing insightful but all good, positive coverage. Gareth makes out the YF to be a bit more intimidating than it is initially - could be the NZ Danny Dyer in the making.

I thought it was great:

kids dressing up, YF crew, TAB girls (for Ahmad), shirts off, gareth's enthusiasm.  Win.

and Daniel of course... how could I forget

This. I love that our club is run by a good honest kiwi bloke who just gets amongst it.

It did make me wonder how the other owners enjoy the games though?

I was talking to Gareth at the Back Bencher before the game (haven't seen the Close-Up bit yet, will watch it tonight... apparently I was on it). Anyway one of the things we talked about was he said he's been trying to talk the other Welnix guys into coming down the the Back Bencher before the games and to the games in the Fever Zone. He said they were a bit intimidated by the prospect. I said to tell them it's like jumping in a pool on a hot summer's day. It's a bit of a shock at first, but then it's fantastic. He said yeah, exactly. He said he keeps telling them that the fans are just ordinary people who are passionate about the team...

...it almost made me think of when Chris Turner described the Bloc as "Salt of the earth"...

I told him to tell them to get over it and get in amongst it. I said they'd get a hell of a good reception if they came to the Back Bencher together.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Just watched it, great piece on Gareth, the Phoenix and the Fever. Hopefully that spurs some of the Wellingtonians that didn't come to the Heart game to come to the next game.

I loved the bit where they showed Gareth as the crowd figure was announced, he deserves every bit of praise we can give him from getting over double the average attendance at that game, we just need to keep them coming back.

Gareth is great.....not many owners would get down with the fans before and during the game.

i reckon he's caught the "Nix bug". Its happened to all of us. We were all living a normal life and them suddenly you get hooked on the Nix and find yourself doing irrational things in the company of mad people.....and you absolutely love it.

When Welnix took over I thought we would be govered by a bunch of boring suits....its turned out the opposite. They have given the club a new perspective. The atmosphere before and during the Heart game was electric. It was of one of the great days in the Nix's short history.

This. He absolutely has got the bug, and he absolutely loves it. In Dunedin, after we beat the roar he was there in the Octogan with his very cool wife, Joanne... she has the bug too - and they were beaming. Absolutely beaming. On Sunday at the Back Bencher Joanne had her stripey on and said she had been threatening Gareth that if we were up with 10 to go she was gonna get her top off. She said "I've planned ahead..." and pulled the shoulder of her shirt back to show a Nix Yellow bra strap. She had a massive grin on her face. Brilliant. Gareth said: "We'll see about that..."

Sure was. Big crowd, stadium jumping, team winning, going second... almost the perfect script. If Daniel's free kick had gone in the top right corner it would have been the icing on the cake... soooo close.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

He should be known as "wor Gaz". Top man.

(Just note that Fat Cashley mingled with the Toon Army for a while. Not that I am suggesting that wor Gaz is in the same mould)

Also it's funny how the public perceive the YF and all the apprehensions about a large group of fans. Definitely not a 1980s UK firm, or a group of one-eyed (mono-syllabled) egg-ball Cantabs. And certainly not overly R-Rated at the game (personal fave is "Your whole team is ineffectual" - kids can join in but also know the other version).

When I was outside the BB she came over and admired my tutu.  I didn't click who she was but she asked if I got my shirt off to which I replied 'every time'.  She seemed pretty stoked so I hope I provided a bit of encouragement.

I thought it was mo-mentus.

I do wish he would stop banging on about the club having to break-even though. When he says "I've never been involved in a business where the goal is just to break-even" it just sounds naive. What exactly did he and the rest of the Nix Nine think they were investing in? Terry never made any secret of the fact he was losing a lot of money, so "buyer beware" surely?

Breaking even is a great goal, and I agree that the owners shouldn't have to plough in a fortune to prop the club up, but what happens if at the end of 5 years the average crowd has stalled at 9,000? Would they really pack it in, or move the Nix elsewhere?

I actually see nothing wrong with expecting a bunch of guys who've made a lot of money in Wellington, and whose fellow Wellingtonians are their customers and employees, to give a liitle bit back through pure philanthropy.

Anyway, right now they are obviously trying to build the crowds so even if they do intend to subsidise the Nix that's not the right thing to say in public. But I'd love to know what Gareth's honest opinion is. Does the Nix absloutely have to break-even? Or is there room for a little bit of  "bread and circuses" thinking?

They are hoping not just for breaeven but for the club to actually make some dough which they will pour back into football. I think it is fantastic they have a vision going forward of a self sustaining model. It is brilliant they have that vision, and while many things have seemingly moved forward slowly, the club is making huge strides with new sponsors coming on board, and a definte 5 year plan that means they are not making decisions for the sake of it. It would be easy t have appointed a new CEO Asst coach etc, but they seem to be prepared to wait for the right person.

The break even thing is multi faceted....its all about income and outgoings . Obviously ticket sales are only one facet of the income stream. gareth threw the gauntlet down and demanded more people come and support the game.......which they did agaisnt the Heart.

Perhaps we can reply in a very polite manner and point out that the Welnix guys are all succesful businessmen and they should be able to use there considerable business talent to increase the income stream in other ways.

In particular there must be more scope for increased sponsorship(great to have the TAB on board) merchandising has huge potential(globally many clubs make a fortune out of merchandising). There is also the probability that the TV rights will put more money into the clubs pocket(though this is outside Welnix's control)

The Heart game showed the enormous potential of the Phoenix brand. I have every confidence in the Welnix guys exploiting this to its full potential.....the club is in good hands.

Welnix have said they would be here for 5 years and in that time hope to have the club on a sustainable footing.

Aspiring to break even in that time seems reasonable.

When I hear him say that, all I hear is a guy who is a shrewd, successful business man saying I didn't get to where I got to by running businesses that lose money. I hear him saying I am committed to the Nix - he has the Nix bug as discussed elsewhere... but he is going to make sure that it doesn't keep needing propping up. And that is great. We want the club to be profitable and self sufficient. He is saying he won't settle for anything less. That's great.

I think Gareth is saying, "While I am involved, I promise you we will NOT be averaging 9,000 crowds in 5 years." I hear him saying that he will make sure that they keep the initiatives to grow the crowd coming. I hear him saying there is no reason why our crowds cannot average well over 10,000, and I WILL make it happen.

I think it means they will manage the clubs finances astutely. That they WILL give Ricki the support staff he needs. Gareth said the the Back Bencher on Sunday that he had been overwhelmed by the number of applications they had had for the CEO's role, and with the quality too... and people who were willing to take a significant pay cut to come and be a part of the Phoenix too... he said he'd been especially impressed by that. And I think that's great news for us. I think it means they WILL continue to do things like pay for the extra hotel nights in Australia between the Gold Coast and the Newcastle game... and look, BOOM! 6 Points. I think it means he will continue to engage with the media - look at the number of media appearances he has made in the last few weeks pushing the club and the positive messages...

[QUOTE=terminator_x]I actually see nothing wrong with expecting a bunch of guys who've made a lot of money in Wellington, and whose fellow Wellingtonians are their customers and employees, to give a little bit back through pure philanthropy.

Gareth can look nearly anyone in New Zealand in the eye and hold his own on the philanthropic front. He is renowned for it. That is absolutely not a problem for the club. He is just keen to grow the club to the point where that is not required anymore... where the club is self sufficient and profitable.

[QUOTE=terminator_x]Anyway, right now they are obviously trying to build the crowds so even if they do intend to subsidise the Nix that's not the right thing to say in public. But I'd love to know what Gareth's honest opinion is. Does the Nix absolutely have to break-even? Or is there room for a little bit of  "bread and circuses" thinking?

I think Gareth is just pretty straight up and honest. He tells it like it is. I think his opinion is the club does need to break even, AND that it bloody well will. He doesn't get involved in businesses that don't do that. He will make sure that the Phoenix grows. That is what he does.

I think it is a master stroke that he is in amongst the Fever. I think he genuinely has the Fever bug... he loves it. But it's worth so much to him and the WelNix consortium.

1. it is a great media story - owner in amongst the fanatical fans etc.
2. it develops a direct conduit to and from the core supporter base. That's worth it's weight in gold to the owners.
3. It gives Gareth an amazing bit of leverage with the media. Not just in the point 1. above way but when Billy Harris does what he does, Gareth can say "Billy, have you been in the Yellow Fever zone at a game? Have you Billy? Do you really know what you are talking about? I have. It's fantastic. The atmosphere is amazing. I challenge you to do some research for your next story. Get in amongst the fans..."

Genius.

I agree that the goal of breaking even is great, and I don't doubt for a second the collective skills and experience that the Nix Nine bring to the club.

I would just like the answer to a very simple question:

If, at the end of 5 years, the Nix Nine have not succeded in their goal to break-even, what will they do?

PS You may want to consider Greenie and Manny duvet covers too, but whatever you do, don't sell any to Happy Gumbo Hopkins. He will allow many, many puppies onto them and the stains will be hard to get out.
