So... I bought the gold passes for the second season running... (2 Adults, 3 kids and the baby - no pass, bloody leech).

After too many years watching my team in UK, home and away (god i miss away games...) with my 'other' family (the footballing kind) - up and down the country, without wife and said kids... the phoenix allowed me to have a team, watch some footy and still pretend it's a family experience.

So, I indoctrinated the kids and forced the wife (with baby) to come watch each match, making the phoenix a tidy packet in merchandising (replica shirts, posters, annoying clappy things) - not to mention overpriced westpac concession stalls in order to bribe the kids during the game - all in the name of that family experience (and so I get to watch the football).

I subscribed to sky to watch the away games, and then I even went up to Sky HD for the couple of games Sky deem to be worthy of their hallowed HD channel - and I watched them with my kids, and when it was too late for the, I watched them on my own at home and watched them again with them on the MySky the next day - all in the name of that family experience (and so I get to watch the football).

But, here we are, hoping CCM lose against an Adelaide team that are vying for the minor-whatsit and that we win against a Mebourne team vying for the same minor whatsit. No other result will do for us.

Surely, if there was ever a game in NZ that was made for the pub, it was this one. None of your egg chasing nonsense, none of your endless standing at wickets wondering when something will happen; football, proper football with a proper set of dependencies... but no doubt my missus and herd would insist it is something I should really make part of that family experience.

Ah.... not this time. I've been given a pass out, a guilt free pass-out to watch proper football over a proper beer (ish) in a proper pub.

You know what's sad... with all the family-centric focus in order to ensure I get to the football, I have absolutely no idea at all, where folks go to watch the match. How crap is that. I mean, How crap is that?

So, I think that fact that I've complemented the fan base by forcing my family to go to games should exempt me from the ridicule of not knowing in which pub to watch the game, but even if it doesn't.. in amongst the ridicule, jokes and questions surrounding my masculinity... could someone just tell me where to go.

It's my one pass out in ages, I'd like to make it worth it....!!

OK i think you are saying where to watch the game on friday? That would be the fever lounge, which is on the street with the giant bungee off of courtenay place, below where the lab is (used to be?.

although I'm not certain because i can't get into bars so I don't go, this is just what I've picked up

just wait for some of the day jobbers to get bored at work and go on the forum tomorrow morning

Four Kings. 10 o'clock on Friday. Should be jumping.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Excellent. Four kings it is then. I'll be the one having to answer text messages every 5 mins from the missus asking "is the game over yet?"

Thanks

Classy post, Danny! I'm sure I'll see you at the Four Kings on Friday night, just look out for me, I'll be the one in the yellow shirt. Ah, and I'm afraid I'll have my missus with me.

It would be nice to share/compare experiences. My missus follows me everywhere. Before she met me she didn't know what football was. Now she comes and watches all my games, indoor, outdoor, social, competitive, she even plays with me. And I'm glad she enjoys watching me. It's an experience we "both" enjoy. I on the pitch, and she with her book or ipod or whatever.

But I totally know what you mean. And I don't even have little kids running around the house yet!!! Anyway, welcome to the club!
Ah, by the way, Greenie is right - go downstairs! I don't think I've ever been upstairs (excluding Germany vs Turkey (?) of the last Euro Cup, just cause my hot german friend was going there and I was hoping for a quiet pash!

It was like a 630 am kick off and she had to work at 8am! otherwise she would've come to spoil the party. 1 day to the game. I'm starting to get hitchy in all the wrong places.

Downstairs?

The only time I've been to the 4 kings was after a match and was told on arrival to remove my YF hat by a smug sh*t-eating gurning doorman. Obviously I understood my lack of dress code on entering, noticing the high standard of Haute Coutre on offer.

Looked like any cattle-market/nightclub you have to go to to get a drink after 23:00 back home. Fair play to the owners it was packed so they are making money.

Did we miss out on this secret room? Or do you need to be a Backroom Staff groupie or something?

Just don't do what I did - and reply with something along the lines of "Dammit woman, I told you not to text me during the footy!"

On the bright side, I have a VERY comfortable couch

Do what I do, lads.

When the draw is announced, sit the wife down and the pair of you take out your diaries. Copy the fixture into both of them

Calmly explain to her that just because a game is "away", it does not mean that said game "does not exist", and, in fact, due to away games for the most part being watched in pubs, the potential for 'beerlarinous' is doubled.

Ensure you have an exceptionally comfortable couch.

Follow these simple guidlines and you'll be laughing.

Or divorced.
