I'm starting to realise the impact Ross Aloisi had on the team last year. Having a leader who can set the example on the pitch (and no doubt off it) is incredibly important. I hope Durante can step up to that sort of follow me lads form in his game.
Remember those games when Ross smashed in a goal from close range, saying to everyone, here, this is what you do...

Granted but he was slow. I don't think we actually thought that the midfield was such an issue and are paying for it now.

perhaps some of those who moaned about ross last season might be reconsidering

clearly the right decision for him  to retire , but he did add a bit of fire to the team and was generally in the right  spot within a second or two of needing to be there

Ross inspired the players a fair bit I reckon. Would've been magic for us if we'd had him 2 or 3 years earlier and without injuries.

He didn't even play for most of last year. Still a good influence though for sure.

The leadership influence was worth having him here regardless of his performances and he was also a good face for the club. If it wasn't for his business commitments I think he could have been a fine addition to the coaching staff.

What we are missing is the player(s) who personifies the values we aspire for the Phoenix to have - pride in the shirt, team first, leave nothing on the pitch etc etc - the team leader(s).

Every team needs such a player, it's McCaw for the ABs, Price (and 2 or 3 others) for the Warriors, So'oialo for the Lions (was Umaga & Collins) etc.

It was Aloisi for the Nix and I think, in time, it will be Durante and McKain. I like Durante's honest and straight comments off the field and McKain's not nonsense approach on the field.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

mate we have twenty-odd players who have pride in playing for the Nix. Fact. What harp on about a retired player?

Bring in Ruben Wiki for spiritual leadership imo.

Your problems aren't with the DM role that Aloisi filled. The problem is in the attacking middle of the field, the playmaker, the one who takes control and distributes the ball, one that Simon Elliott would fit perfectly. Daniel tends to drift in and out of a game, he doesn't grab it and direct it, he kind of snipes in here and there. In otherwords leadership at the attacking end is what is needed.

Sure he had his moments but I would think that Smeltz delivering goals had more influence.

Besides, Durante and McKain is doing the job quite fine. We have like plenty of vice-captains and seniors players designed to replace any influence that Ross may have in the team. For goodness sake stop dreaming about the past as tho it is a necessary thing for the present!

One guy is not the team, we have plenty of motivation and stirrer uppers in the team. One sad game does not define us and the last game there was a turn around even tho it is a 0-0 draw.

If there is no leadership with them are you suggesting that we are up the cheek without a paddle. . . .? Get over it!AllWhitebelievr2008-09-19 17:42:13
