I'm following the English carling cup at the moment and got to thinking that mid week football in the A - League didn't work too well but it could be re-introduced as a side line cup.  The over all winner could be allowed entrence into the Asian Champions league (spots are reserved for league winners and grand final winners).  Through out the season a home and away fixture system could be put in place.  EG we play The Heart home and away and the winner goes through aggrigate goals.  Loser is out winner goes on till finally we are left with two teams.  These two teams play a one off game to decide the winner of the (for names sake) Mr Tza Cup.

I was reading somewhere a while back that the FFA were in the process of organizing a similar tournament which will include the teams in Australia below A League level as well as the A League teams.

I think it would be great idea, but the travelling cost would be prohibitive.

I have definately read that plans are in place for an FAA Cup and that the Phoenix will be inelligible to take part.

I also think squad size would be an issue. From my limited watching of those matches, it seems like there's usually a bunch of second tier (albeit still bloody good) players that generally make the starting lineup for those matches.

Perhaps that was why midweek football here was so tired.. not enough of a bench or squad list to roateet players and keep them fresh?

All good points made.  I can see why we don't have the man-power or funds to run it (even though I was thinking half priced tickets to the mid-week games) I forget a-league teams don't have the depth of teams like the mighty Liverpool, Man U or even blackburn or wolves and cheat chealsea and Man City (who I think rival Barca as best football team in the world at the minute) cheats??? yeah lets buy a title!!!  I hate Man U but respect the hell out of them for wot they have acheived thus far this season having spent fack all compared to City who could have financed a small country with the wage bill every week).  Maybe in a few years when we get a few more teams in the A-League it could be possible (Christchurch or Dunidun need a team and Sydney needs another (wot happened to the rovers)maybe we could have a state of origin type seris with New Zealand players vs Australiaian teams made up of plays based in the A-League best of three over a month, that would surely draw crowds and not tax teams so hard

Like the idea, but if we keep going at the current rate, doubt we would have much of a team left.
