Daniel Lins Cortes, one of Wellington’s much vaunted Brazilian Fantastic Four, atoned for hitting the crossbar from his penalty attempt late in the first half against Melbourne Victory by leading his team in a stunning comeback in the second half with incisive runs down the left wing, excellent all-round vision and the home side’s opener in the 79th minute, which shifted the momentum for the final helter-skelter ten minutes. In the end, Melbourne, the champions, were a rabble. Had Royce Brownlie not hit the post and Shane Smeltz missed a point-blank header, Wellington would have pulled off the greatest victory in three seasons of the A-League. Hats off to the Wellington public. You created a marvellous atmosphere at Westpac Stadium, and I’ve never heard 15,000 sound any bigger. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. This was New Zealand, after all.
How must our good friend Mr Slater be looking back on his comments made last year that keeping a New Zealand side in the Australian league was a mistake?
The Phoenix have made a big statement and if they can play like they did in the second half on Saturday throughout the season they will push hard for a finals spot. More positively, as I pointed out in December 2006, having football take off across the Tasman is good not just for Kiwi football but for the whole A-League and ultimately football in our region.
