Welkom Roly! - Never to be an All White

His skill level has allowed ernie to play him further forward, that alone must be a bit of a breath of fresh air for him. I'd imagine it would be good fun creating/scoring goals after spending years in defence or defensive midfield roles.

The thing that impresses me most about this re-signing is that he hasn't gone elsewhere in the league. Great work welnix/ernie etc etc.

Love to hear this! On top of Burns (pretty much) confirming that he's staying, this just confirms the good vibes around the place. Real similar to Ifill/Greenie etc in 09. How long till next season?

I'm going to to risk blasphemy and say that while Paul Ifill gave us some excellent years of his career, his best were spent in England, playing in FA cup finals etc etc...

Roly's best years of his career could potentially be spent with us.

agreed....but not yet Ifillesque...

So this means that alongside a not-a-"not a striker", and a left back, Ernie needs to find someone who can take corners.

Yeah, I know he's already the domestic marquee; don't believe he 'always' was though? Just wondering if Roly is now the normal marquee, or if he is/was already?

So happy to hear he is committing to our team. So many good players often jump ship for more money after a successful season and struggle to find their feet...whereas he has realized he is part of a solid team with a good coach and that he is performing. Very smart. If he does well next year and maybe the one after, he will be able to join a decent league somewhere in Europe/Asia - or even better, commit to us for life and become a Nix legend!

Well if you look at our hirings this season, and the fact that they already said that they spent the cap, then at least part of Burns's salary might have been outside of the cap, not all of it. But some.

You can't have part in and part out.  You have a player in or out.  Burns was our domestic marquee and outside the cap.

What I mean is that he might be outside of the cap and consequently we might have spent less than the cap. We might not be spending the full cap + Burns we might have been spending a bit less of the cap + Burns, and consequently not all of his wages are above our cap limit.

Does it really apply to Stein though? Don't think he did all that well anyway. And he just decided not to renew his contract and go back home, where I believe he found it fairly difficult to get a gig for a while...

Interesting:

I was just reading the Herald article about promising U20 players and Gedion Zelalem caught my attention.  He held Ethiopian and German passports while representing Germany.  Moves to the US and gains US citizenship AFTER playing for Germany but now appearing for the US at the U20 WC.

If he can do that, which I thought he could not as he did not hold US citizenship prior to representing Germany, Roly should in theory be able to represent NZ in the future.

needs to be a competitive game. So if he represented Germany in a friendly game then he could still play for USA.

Thanks for reminding me of that.  I did some sluething and it seems he turned down the competitive games that Germany offered him.  For his sake I hope he goes on to represent the full USA national team as the move has meant he will never play for Ethiopia.

The FIFA Statutes don't seem to limit the ability to switch between youth sides, but they definitely do limit the ability to play for a full national team after playing for a different youth side. That's why Vinniesta couldn't switch to the All Whites when we applied for that in 2012.

Roly definitely isn't eligible to play for the All Whites.

If Roly lives in New Zealand for five years he can still play for the all whites because he was picked for Curacao but never played a match. So lets hope Roly stays with the phoenix for another 3 years.

You can represent any country if your eligible for them at youth level, but you can only represent one country at senior level unless your like diego costa .... If role stays in NZ for five years, gains NZ citizenship then he will be able to play for NZ

I thought it was only if you were eligible for the other country when you played for the first country at youth level.

Yep this. He played youth competitive matches for the Netherlands and wasn't eligible for NZ at the time so he can never represent NZ, however he was eligible for Curacao at the time hence why he can still play for them.

No it's not. There have been player who have represented different youth countries and go on to represent different senior country. Roly has not played a competitive match for curaçao therefore in three years time role can play for NZ

Yes there are players who have represented one country at youth level then represented another - but those players all were already eligible to play for the 2nd country at the time they played a competitive match for the original country. Eg Rory Fallon played competitive matches for England at youth level but was eligible to play for NZ at the time, hence was able to play for NZ at a later date.

I find this thread's title confusing and unclear.

From FIFA

http://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/02/78/29/07/fifastatutsweben_neutral.pdf

If a player has more than one nationality, or if a player acquires a new nationality (this is Roly), or if a player is eligible to play for several representative teams due to nationality, he may, only once, request to change the association for which he is eligible to play international matches to the association of another country of which he holds nationality, subject to the following conditions:

a) He has not played a match (either in full or in part) in an official competition at “A” international level for his current association (he has played for the Dutch in U17 WCQs) , and at the time of his first full or partial appearance in an international match in an official competition for his current association, he already had the nationality of the representative team for which he wishes to play (He was not eligible for NZ at the time of those games).

Thus he cannot play for the All Whites. He can play for Curaçao because he was already eligible via this parent's birth.

Semantics, but an "A" international is not a youth game, it's the senior team. Roly hasn't played in an official competition at "A" international for Netherlands (if he had he wouldn't be able to play for Curacao) but he has played in an international match in an official competition (U17 WC).
