John hart is no longer with the warriors

I think the Phoenix should pay him an hours consultancy fee to pick his brains on how the warriors turned it around AucklandPhoenix2011-12-31 12:16:43

Heard an interesting interview with someone from the Breakers. They travel as late as possible so the players just arnt sitting around in hotel rooms etc. They seemed to think this has helped with their away record since starting to use it.

I don't understand the travel thing.

Surely if you get there, have a night in, train then are allowed to wander around the city it wouldn't make a difference.

Wonder if it would make a difference if travel arrangements were like the amazing race. Give them the money and get them to find their own way there.

We've only scored 3 goals away from home this season.

It's easier for the breakers and the warriors, they are based in Auckland and the flights are more regular to Australia. And to places like adelaide, perth, newcastle the flights are direct.  The Nix will either have to stop in Auckland/Sydney and then carry onto their destination.

The Fox commentators in the after-match show last night (why isn't this on Sky????) said that the team has tried EVERYTHING including stuff like not eating on the flight over, as well as other things to try and combat the away bug.

I'm not sure how true that is but hey it was on Fox.

It was true then.

Im convinced its the climate. If theyve said that theyve tried everything, then in my eyes this is all it can be.

I also think the reason the Warriors and Breakers have been doing alright is

1. Warriors play during the milder months, avoiding many of the hotter summer months.
2. Breakers play indoors, where the climate can be controlled.
(neither are subjected to, or are required to adapt to windy rainy wellington either )

Look at all the other teams that come here, they only win as often at ROF as we do away. It goes BOTH ways, its not just the Nix. Its any team who crosses the ditch.

I think the only way we're ever going to get through this away slump is by assembling the very best team in the League, much like CCM and Roar when they won here, convincingly, last season. When youre that good, you'll win wherever you play.

I think for the adelaide game they all travelled on the Thursday.

I'm basing this on the fact a lot of the squad came to the movies on Wednesday night...there is a pattern there too. But probably not a completely reliable theory.

I can generally tell who is or isn't in the traveling squad though

Allegedly

Exactly - couldn't agree more. We have a good core, but when you look at what the Heart are also getting together up front, it makes you realise how critical 2 new quality signings are.
Hopefully the transfer window does throw up 1 or 2 options. Yeah we can wait till the next off season, but so many floating fans are getting peed off with this away form thing. Am worried about the home crowds. Club needs to go public with some intentions quick - as Wednesday's 3pm gate is potentially going to be dire.

Hva Ricki as the home coach and an assistant coach to manage the away games

Revolutionise the game and have a Home coach and an Away coach. Patent the idea and claim royalties. Use it to sign marquee players that attract full houses at the Ring of Fire. Win the title. Take out the AFC Champions League.

One step at a time of course.

I wonder what Perth do, their closest away game can't be any less than a 4 hour flight so you could say they have it tougher than us.

Perth's away record is similar to ours:

Played 78 W 14 D 17 L 47

The international travel must have some effect, our home record shows the Aussie teams struggle with it just as much as we do away.

You're right. Us and Brisbane have the best Home records in the league.

I recall Perth did very well in the  old league, think they even won it a few times

So it seems to me it is about poor coaching /  doomed attitude  / not a good enough team  - mainly the last as we have not managed to win the league yet

I think it's in their heads. When you get a monkey like this on your back and it gets so well publicized and discussed I think it just gets in your head! Get Nelsen and his sports shrinks involved.

Great that they spoke to the Crusaders, but I think they should be talking to the Warriors and Breakers as well because they're in the same position as us (ie travel to Australia a heck of a lot more)

http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/wellingtonphoenix/news-display/phoenix-and-crusaders-talk-travel/44772

Earlier this month Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert, searching for answers as his team tried in vain to win on the road, hit on the idea of talking to someone who regularly tasted success away from home.

Herbert got in touch with Crusaders rugby coach Todd Blackadder and asked could Phoenix captain Andrew Durante and himself spend some time in Christchurch to talk about the problem.

Blackadder was happy to talk and invited Herbert and Durante to the Crusaders base last Tuesday.

In between, of course, the Phoenix broke their duck by beating Gold Coast United, and five days later created a club record by winning consecutive away games for the first time with a 1-0 success over Newcastle Jets.

Not for one moment did I consider cancelling the visit, Herbert said.

Okay, we won two games on the road but now we have to continue getting results away from home.

When we were struggling to get a result away from Westpac I was determined to leave no stone unturned as I looked for a solution.

Who better to seek advice from than the Crusaders? They have regularly won away from home and last year, because of the terrible earthquakes Canterbury has been suffering, they were playing away from Christchurch all the time successfully.

Unfortunately Blackadder wasnt able to be at the meeting as he was attending a funeral, but assistant coach Daryl Gibson and captain Richie McCaw hosted the Phoenix pair along with other Crusaders.

It was really productive for us, Herbert said.

Durante agreed. He said seeing how other teams, and other codes, did things was always going to be helpful.

Actually when we got down to talking we werent too far away from what they do, especially on last weeks trip where we were away for eight days, Durante said.

So far as away games went Richie (McCaw) said a lot of it came down to attitude. The feeling in their group was that there should be no excuses or feeling sorry for themselves.

That was the attitude we adopted after losing at home to Perth. We werent used to dropping points at home and we said there could be no excuses at Gold Coast or Newcastle. We just had to pick up points.

On away trips Richie said he would talk to the players and relay their thoughts back to Todd Blackadder.

I did the same thing when we were in Sydney.

On the Tuesday we went for a long walk along the coast from Coogee Beach. It was hot and we had a dip in the ocean.

Training was scheduled for the afternoon but after we talked he cancelled training, though the boys could do some light work if they wished.

Some of the boys felt we should have done a bit more, but I believe Ricki got it just right and we felt good going into the Newcastle game.

When the Crusaders travel they make sure the players remain active and dont lie on their bed all day.

They have things like a coffee club to get them out of the room and, as we did, go for good walks.

Meeting the Crusaders staff and players was a good experience and we were invited to sit in on a team meeting before training.

Durante said he and Herbert also saw the kind of environment it takes to be successful,

They would have had at least 12 staff, including three people filming their training session.

We have been getting along with a coach, a fitness trainer, a physiotherapist and a kit man.

The Crusaders is a really professional set up and Im sure that is what the Phoenix will have next year.

Everyone was really helpful and they said we, or the players, would be welcome to visit again.

No direct flights to Newcastle champ!
