I like it...although we didn't manage to avoid the gimmicks of a franchise based name, it does seem to make a bit of sense.  Pros, yellow and black colouring and having Wellington in the name.  Cons, how do you rhyme phoenix?

Still disappointed by the cancellation of the limerick competition. I was all set with:

There once was a man called Terry
Footed the bill for wellington phoenix fc
The A-league, they said
Would be turned on its head
And the trophy headed over the sea

G'day Chaps!
Just a quickie from an AU fan welcoming you into the fold.
Here's hoping your club can do well and that Wellington can pull in the fan base better then the last attempt.

Wellington has the reputation like Melbourne of being the sporting capital of NZ, what are your forcasts for the average gate's going to be?
Either way, good luck and maybe get to meet in the gf!!

surely has to be bigger than auckland.  10,000 average inthe stadium would make for a good atmosphere and a lot of noise, but figures close to 20,000 would be possible for the big games.  footy is really big down here, but we'd have to get the pajero driving mums along to ensure the gates are massive. anythig less than a $10k average would be a disappointment and would probably mean the team isn't playing well.

hey there chelsea paul, thanks for the good old aussie welcome!

as you may be able to tell, we're pretty damn delighted about the whole damn thing. and yes, let's hope we can pull the numbers (i'm 95% positive, but just anxious to see it happen...).

as for average gates, i'll go for 15,000 with 25,000 on opening day (and 35,000 at the grand final).  like armies said, it depends on how well the idea catches on outside the direct footballing community.

as you may be able to tell, i have great faith in serepisos, dow, wells and herbert to get things right.

anyway welcome to the yellow fever forum!

hey dudes, a genuine aussie here, hope you guys go well this year.
im a bit disappointed sydney let brockie go, i think hes gonna be great, and im sure attendances will be better than last year's. as to the grand final being played in wellington, maybe in a few years when the club has more money, im pretty sure its coming back home to sydney where it belongs (if only the butcher thing had never happened.... ).
anyways good luck for the year, and get excited about 08/09 when wollongong and north qld will be in it too!

Hey, flavius, thanks for the support. I think we'll do ok now that we have people running the team who don't think the answer is a bunch of overseas has beens.
I hope we sign brockie, your loss is our gain.
08/09 will be awesome, this league will just get better and better. I know there's a few rabid QLDers who are gutted about T'Ville missing out.

Another welcome from Melbourne. From here it sounds smells and sounds better than Auckland. Wellington - my No.2 team. But Victory will thrash your asses.

We got 13,000 when the Knights played in Wellington and I think the first game will be huge. Maybe average 10K per game over the season for the first season would be a good start.

Chants could be kind of hard, I don't think anything rhymes with Phoenix.

g'day wellington. long time reader, first time poster!

good luck in the a league, like others have said, you guys are also my second favourite team in the league. I hope we can develop a healthy rivalry.

with no other nz team in the league, who do you think will become your biggest rivals. I understand rivalries take time to develop, but you must have thoughts on which team you like and dislike.

once again, good luck.

Phoenix is a great name.  Rising from the ashes and all that.  Of course, lets just hope that it will be a looong time before this phoenix burns itself to death in its nest, just so another can rise in its place...!

Arrghh - pity about the name. What was wrong with something simple like Wellington City?

FFA have got their heads up their arses when it comes to marketing...we got lumbered with Victory FFS! Still, we've come to love it, and I'm sure Phoenix will grow on you lot as well.

Maybe the Kings of Leon song Four Kicks could be usefully converted to the cause

Herbert don't take no nonsense
He's here to rectify
He's got his black belt buckle,
And the Phoenix fire in his eye

Your trouble is the general fanbase is unlikely to know the Followill boys work.

It's pretty key to make sure the majority of chants are tunes known to those we want to get on board and making noise early.  Once there is a core and people know what to expect we can start branching out... Hard News2007-03-30 00:04:23

Get off that name means bad things to many of those with some memory of football in the capital.A new name without any association  to any  in the past is best.Lets all start fresh and forget about past rivalry.AT THE END OF THE DAY THIS IS OUR CHANCE.

Quite right about the name Weillington City. These are clubs that have come and gone, much like Waikato United and Mount Maunganui. You can't simply go back to using these names as someone owed money etc is likely to come back and ask for it. It digs up old baggage. I'd have liked to use the Waikato United moniker when I spend 1000's of hours working on getting an NZFC franchise going in Hamilton. Had we gone down that road then we'd have creditors at the door in no time. So Waikato FC it was....and there was also an FC Waikato which played under the Claudelands Rovers banner back in 1987. You have to be aware of these things. I'd have preferred FC Wellington with a more traditional name but Phoenix is starting to grown on me.

Proposed, not approved by the FFA ismy understanding Danny.  Suspect the noise about the links to the AEK badge may see it 'tweaked'.

As soon as I saw the logo on tele I thought of the AEK badge. Had a bit of a look this morning at their website and it might pay for management to clear up the matter before they find the Greeks filing a copyright lawsuit. Still, a link with that club might be worth a look. The Kingz and Knights tried it with Chelsea and Charlton and it was a lame failure but Wellers does have a substantial Greek community and it would make sense to embrace that with open arms. The main man is Greek too, so who knows we could benefit with from a Wellington Phoenix - AEK Athens alignment. Especially if a joint shirt sponsor in LG could be developed. You then start looking at bringing in a quality Greek import and start flogging Phoenix replicas into Athens. Its also an outlet for A League players in the Capital to go try out in the Greek league.

Ricky don't lose that number then - no doubt a song familiar to most players trying out for the squad.
