Hi everyone,

I am a Human Geography Honours student at Victoria University of Wellington. For my honours research essay I am investigating how the Wellington Phoenix football club has localised its brand and identity to the city of Wellington and New Zealand.

The following is a questionnaire that looks into the identity of the club’s fan base and their relationship with the team. I would really appreciate it if you could fill this out and please feel free to add any comments to any questions. The questionnaire will be anonymous and if you could reply via email to wardcame1@myvuw.ac.nz that would be great.

Questions:

              1.   Do you consider yourself a ‘sports fan’?

  1. Do you consider yourself a ‘Wellington Phoenix fan’?
  2. Do you consider yourself a ‘Wellingtonian’?
  3. If you are a local to the Wellington area, how often do you attend the Phoenix home games?

a.        Never

b.       Once or twice a season

c.        Regularly

d.       Every home game

  1. Do you see the Wellington Phoenix as representing New Zealand or Wellington?
  2. Does it matter to you whether the composition of the team is mainly local players?
  3. Do you agree with the team playing some home games away from Wellington? E.g. Palmerston North, Christchurch, Auckland or Dunedin.
  4. If the club has to move to Auckland for financial reasons would you still call yourself a Phoenix supporter?
  5. What aspects of the game experience do you enjoy the most when going to a Wellington Phoenix football game outside of the game itself? e.g. Food, etc.
  6. What aspects of the game experience are unique to Wellington City? e.g. Chants, etc.
  7. What aspects of the game experience are unique to New Zealand?
  8. In your opinion what aspects of the club or the team make the Wellington Phoenix a local club, other than where they play?
  9. In your opinion what aspects of the club or the team make the Wellington Phoenix a national club, other than where they play?

If you would like a summaries copy of my research I would be happy to send one at the conclusion of my project which will be in October. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask me at wardcame1@myvuw.ac.nz.

Regards,

Cameron Ward
