Wellington Phoenix v Waikato FC 6PM 15/11

Wellington Phoenix A coach Jonathan Gould has hinted he will bring an imposing line-up to Hamilton on Monday night for the first-ever ASB Challenge Series match against Waikato FC.
Gould says up to nine players from the clubs Hyundai A-League squad could make the trip north joining six Football Development Foundation academy players in the match day squad, which will be confirmed after the Phoenixs A-League match against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night in Wellington.
A large portion of this team is going to be made up of players who play in the A-League and one of the deliverables in setting this team up was to give those players some kind of match preparation, Gould said.
And on top of that the youngsters, specifically in this game from around the wider Auckland region, get a chance to play alongside them making it quite a vibrant and exciting mix.
That could mean the likes of Nick Ward, Diego, Troy Hearfield and Danny Vukovic, none of whom featured in the win over Perth Glory could line up against Waikato if not selected against the Mariners.
It could also mean a return to Hamilton for rising Phoenix youngster Marco Rojas who caught attention of Phoenix bosses during a trial after standout displays for Waikato FC two seasons ago.
Its fantastic for Marco. He struggled recently with a niggling injury but got himself fit and back into the first team mix and out of the pitch last weekend against Perth. So for him to now go back to Waikato and ply his trade as a professional footballer, hell be very proud because I know he didnt get that opportunity in the pre-season fixture against Brisbane in Hamilton.
Former Waikato youth league player Caleb Rufer son of Wynton has returned from a stint at Wehen Wiesbade in Germany and could also play some part against his old club.
The other members of the Football Development Foundation academy drawn into the Phoenix A for the inaugural ASB Challenge are Zane Sole, Ashton Pett and Sean Lovemore (all Waitakere United), Danyon Drake (Waikato FC academy) and Alec Solomons (East Coast Bays).
Waikato backed up a competitive but losing opening day performance against Auckland with a hard fought win over Otago in Dunedin last week and with a crunch match against Team Wellington looming on the horizon, the chance to test themselves against a strong Phoenix A side is something coach Willy Gerdsen says will inspire both the players and fans.
Were a very young squad and all players want to test themselves against professional players and it sounds like their squad will be much stronger than I thought, to be honest.
Im sure with the sort of players it sounds like the Phoenix are bringing, we will get a number of people from the community who may not have come before out to watch Waikato and the Phoenix A side, Gerdsen said.
Its a great little football ground at Fred Jones Park and were all looking forward to it.
Gould, himself a former coach of Hawkes Bay United in the national league when it was known as the New Zealand Football Championship, was expecting no favours from Waikato.
Every player that steps on the park and aspires to a higher level would love to play in a game like this, and Waikato will be no different. Therell be players in there thinking am I good enough to match up against an A-league player.
From what I can see, theyve got themselves very well organised under Willy Gerdsen. He knows his stuff, and has done a fantastic job at East Coast Bays, and while people think of Waikato as a rugby region theres a lot of passionate football people in the Hamilton area and the club have already started the ASB Premiership with a good away win last week. Itll be a tough game and thats what we need.
The ASB Challenge Series pits the newly formed Phoenix A side against each of the eight ASB Premiership clubs in a series one-off midweek matches for $2000 prize money.
Monday nights match kicks off at 6pm.

Think when they play the central region sides you will see more players from this region rather than the Northern based ones.

great to see this start up - hopefully a few players will take advantage of the opportunity

No TV coverage I assume?
Im guessing no, but what a shame. Is there not even coverage for the NZFC games? TVNZ should pick those up and the challenge matches, i'd be watching!

So theyre not actually a team? Just a random collection of players from roughly around the area plus some nix reserves?
Im a bit confused by the team dynamic. Had hoped a squad of young players would be based in wellington and travel, train and play as a team.
Allegedly

Unfortuantely the rest of the country wouldn't be though.

They more likely would if it were a competitive game

So do we know who the squad is? Possible starting formations? Will be interesting to see what Gouldy is made of from a manager / coach position.

LOL, probably. But it will be interesting to see the different tactics when you've got a bunch of young guys wanting to run their ass off to earn a contract.

Oh, If they win I'll be calling for that

Or if they lose, we'll end up with a angsty "sack Ghould" thread.

I don't think Waikato will win somehow, Phoenix will have too much talent, and have more on the line to play for

I would be more interested in this if it was a proper Nix reserve team with players from anywhere that the Nix might be interested in signing going forward, e.g. the Solomon Islander who played in Queenstown for us pre-season last year (just an example). Can't have our cake and eat it I suppose and having these games are better than what we had before.

I think you're selling this short. You've got guys out there playing Youth league or ASB premiership, just happens it's a bit regional. The idea is to look at talent out there and see if they show something.
Remember that I'm not even sure Rande has made an NZFC side this year shich means some of these lads are rated more highly by someone.

44' Crowther is sharply off his line to beat Sam Margetts to a through ball. That would have been Row Z, but there the stands only go from A to D.
Probably came off his line and made the challenge at about halfway knowing Crowther...

GOAL! Phoenix A take the lead as a long ball from Alex Solomons is allowed to bounce by the Waikato defence. Mirjan Pavlovic pounces and with seemingly no angle to work with squeezes teh ball past Fletcher for the game's first goal.

Where is Ward and Hearfield? Not playing because they will be playing this weekend i'm going to guess but I would have thought both of them could have done with the gametime.
