For a pre-season game against a team that isn't Sydney or Adelaide? Doubtful.

Mind you, it would be nice to go back to OP...ah, nostalgia...

Yes indeed looks like the club has done a deal with the FFA, as Melbourne has had a bit of travelling to do, and their lads are a bit tired and stuff like that!  Couldn't they have played it in Woollongong or somewhere like that?????Or even Kalgoorlie!!!!!

Wellington Phoenix have turned down the chance to play their next Pre-Season Cup match at home, believing an away trip to Melbourne will better prepare them for the rigours of A-League football.

The Phoenix, beaten 2-1 by Queensland Roar in Christchurch three days ago, also want to keep the A-League season opener, against Melbourne Victory on August 26, fresh so have acceded to a Football Federation Australia request to play the match in Melbourne on Saturday.

Wellington secured a home cup match against A-League champions Melbourne after finishing third in group B, but Melbourne's extensive travel schedule during the past few weeks was the major factor in FFA's request.

If they beat Melbourne, who finished last in group A, on Saturday they will play the winner of the Newcastle-Sydney match in a playoff for fifth and sixth, while the two losers will playoff to avoid the wooden spoon the following weekend.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said playing in Australia had attractions for the club, and he agreed to the request last night.

"It's a win-win situation for both teams really," he said. "It allows us to rehearse the travel requirements and everything involved with that, and it also helps Victory out. They've had a very busy and long travel schedule lately."

The Phoenix would lose nothing financially, with Pre-Season Cup matches achieving little more than break-even status and the FFA meeting travel costs.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert had earlier said yesterday that he "wouldn't mind one more away game".

"Just from a player point of view of view. Travelling away and everything that goes with it, it's good for the team to experience that and it's also good from a team bonding perspective.

"I think given where the organisation is now and what we're heading to in terms of that first A-League match, Melbourne Victory at home wouldn't be ideal."

Wellington missed the Pre-Season Cup semifinals by one point, Queensland and Central Coast progressing from group B.

Wellington have the two cup matches over the next two weekends and are looking at playing another warmup match the following weekend before they take on Melbourne on August 26.

Meanwhile, more than 3000 people attended an ope

is another possible reason why the pheonix wanted to play in melbourne is that possibly, melbourne will pull double the crowd wellington would, making takings at the gate much better??
maybe someone in-the-know could give us a little more info.
changing the game to christchurch-or any other city in nz- would seem a more logical move, as you could sell more memberships and give the nz fans more reasons to love the pheonix.
so maybe the pheonix managment where hoping for 10-15,000 melbourne fans to turn up instead of 3-5,000 nz's, increasing sales???
i really couldnt think of anything else...

I think the management see it as a chnace to keep people fired up about the 26th.

No matter what the result in the melbourne game over there, the last time we played at the stadium we won 3-0 and it was a great atmosphere. If we lose away to melbourne, then not much damage done, as we are away from home etc etc.

What I am trying to say is a loss at the stadium could potentially put off a few 'neutrals' whereas a loss away from home wouldn't do as much damage.

I still say that if I made a list of places to play this game Wellington would be 2nd from bottom due to exactly the reasons put out by Sir Les.  The only trouble is the one place below it would be Melbourne.

Why on earth would you give the opposition a home game and not play at a neutral venue or somewhere else here.

I can see where Ricki H is coming from by wanting another away game pre-season. It may be that an away game at Melbourne pre-season means less likelihood of the boys being overly daunted by big away fixtures once the season kicks off.  Ironing out such issues is part of what a pre-season build-up is all about. And where better than Melbourne to do that.

Good decision over all me thinks. Good to see Phoenix mgmt thinking about things...they are light years ahead of what the Knights clowns were doing. Hopefully they get a huge gate take share from Melbourne and can then put that toward a Marquee player or maybe free drinks for YF members on the 26th. pow

I would not be suprised if melbournevictory.com.au gives live updates. they did for the tasmania clash anyway, and they do it for most home and away matches throughout the season.
But i think the commentary would be a little biased

I don't mind on a baiased commentary, like... the other team has just scored, a soft goal... against the run of play the other team (whats their names) has just scored a very lucky goal, didn't deserve it... what a fluke, the other team has two attacks and scores both of them... Coveney is so old he shouldnt even be allowed to play..

SEN Radio http://www.sen.com.au usually do live coverage of Tards games, only problem is that is two Tards that do the coverage, and they are shockingly biased for the Tards.

Been in touch with the marketing and media man at Victory FC and we'll get something sussed so that we can get coverage. May only be a link to their gamecast, but we're working on getiing a YF one. Melbourne have been great though - hats off to them - they are doing their best to help us on this one

Yep Olympic Park. I went there for the Melbourne v Knights game - great atmosphere. the Knights played quite well most of the game, 4-0 wasn't really a true reflection

Haha. Nah - we actually played well in the first half, especailly considering all the issues surrounding the team at that time. I remember being suprised. Then about half way through the 2nd half we dropped the ball

It was Ricki... his first game in charge.  FFA screwed with the travel arrangements so a patchwork squad were introduced to each other in the tunnel beforehand.

I remember before that game Trimmers on SEN predicted a 6-8 nil win by Melbourne as the Knights had like 4 players straight from the VPL it was only a 15min burst by melbourne that won that game.
