Partnership worth banking on
Tuesday, 21 September 2010
WESTPAC New Zealand Limited has joined forces with Wellington Phoenix FC as the clubs official community partner.
Westpac New Zealand is one of the countrys largest full service banks, with more than 1.2 million customers nationwide.
The partnership of Westpac and the Phoenix will see the two organisations work together to establish, promote and support a wide range of community initiatives in the greater Wellington region.
Westpac will help us as a club to reach out and connect with even more members of the community than we do currently, said Phoenix chief executive Nathan Greenham.
Together we will be able to be much more involved in the good things happening in our region, not only from a football perspective but also in a whole raft of other ways. Whether were visiting schools, attending charity fundraising events or helping schools on beach clean-up programmes, there are some really different and exciting ways were working on with Westpac to get out and about in the community.
Westpac will also host large groups of people from a variety of community organisations at Phoenixs home games at Westpac Stadium throughout the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season.
Greenham said the club had built a strong community profile since its inception in 2007.
Weve always done a good job of engaging with the community but we truly believe as a club that its time to take things up a notch. Whats happening with the Phoenix and football in New Zealand at the moment really provides us with the vehicle to be involved in the community.
But we want to take our involvement in the community further than that, beyond simply football, and with Westpac well involved in some really exciting things.

Hope this has been cleared with Football NZ and ASB. The ASB Westpac Phoenix Challenge??? Doesn't seem completely all good if it effects that...

Would anyone here be able to hazard a guess at approximately how much of the Phoenix is covered by sponsors and how much Terry now funds?
Will need to get me bank accounts with ASB and Westpac it looks like!

Far too many free tickets given out in Wellington...Phoenix probably being the team that give out the least too!

a few interest free loans might not go amiss in the hands of Terry's accountants (relax, it's a joke - sort of)

THe banks have finally worked out that football is a great big fat middle class door to the mortgage heartland.
Although NZF are the A-League franchise holders, I doubt they have any right to interfere with the PHoenix commercial activities, including their sponsorship/partnership arrangements. Ah yes, the ASB Challenge. Ha ha.
We now have banks competing with each other for football brand. Good.

Maybe Terry could ask for one of those special Westpac loans (the ones which are actually bigger than they appear to be)?

Discussion on this also in the Main Phoenix forum. edit - which is where i've just moved this
edit - true but the other one is a bit tangled up with the Export 33 sponsorship - so I'm painstakingly moving posts and really making it all fairly incomprehensible

that's 20 mins of my life i won't get back !

So this is a non-financial sponsorship? I have one word to say to that: PFFFFFFFFT.
Grow up and give us some money you lazy jerks.
EDIT:
And by us I mean the Phoenix, the players, and myself.
Glad I cleared that up!

Great that Westpac has got in behind W Phoenix. Non-cash contributions is a worry becos what is needed for WP to survive is the ability to reduce the deficit!!!!! Before you can save a mortally wounded person, u must stop the haemorrhaging. If more freeloaders and hangers-on get to watch the game at our ROF, that will boost the attendance and WP will still bleed to death! GCU, NJ, NQF and even BR are facing dwindling crowds. We need members who reach into the pockets and but season passes!!!

While a big fat cheque would be handy, I wouldn't write off the benefits of a deal like this just to raise community awareness and continue to build a fan support base. This is something that must be done while the club is reasonable healthy (i.e. not fat broke) which will pay off in the long term.
Imo this type of community focus will help the nix avoid the situation many aussie clubs are in right now where their communities just don't care anymore. Good to see a medium-long term outlook from terry and the other nix suits

Westpac, eh? Wonder if they'll drop the interest rate on my mortgage when I tell them I'm a Phoenix fan. Nah, though not.
Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Wouldnt be to sure about that. Sure? All the people that I know who can often get free tickets for Rugby can NEVER get freebies for the Phoenix games.

Well im the opposite i know some who dont bother with rugby and have rarely attended a Phoenix game unless a freebie is involved.Pisses me off i can tell you.
Dont go along with BS in that release, not convinced how it can be much benefit without cash being handed over.
Our guys have done pretty well in helping with things in the community before this mob came on board.Seems more like an excuse for the suits to get more free stuff.

Re the question of no money changing hands...Surely this sponsorship is about Westpac entertaining their corporate and community clients at the football through a special deal with the Phoenix.
They would surely be paying for that even at a reduced rate, wouldn't they?.. rather than just handing over cash for the Phoenix to do what it wanted.
