What happened in Brazil?

So Ricki went to Brazil on a scouting mission, with the CEO, and Daniel along as a local to make the introductions and act as translator.

What happened? Did they come close to signing anyone?

Did they find they couldn't afford the players they did want?

Or was the problem getting players who could speak enough English to be understood by their teammates? (Think the 'Cleberson' debacle.)

There was a lot of media hoopla - and official optimism - when the scouting party set off for Brazil.  I haven't seen anything since. It's as if that part of the trip never happened.

Anyone got the 'good oil' on this? (As apposed to wild speculation.)

I dont think they found anything over there. Looks like its Europe (and maybe Ozzie local Leagues)

didn't Tony Pignata say we're close to put "players in those positions"? By that I thought he meant we are about to sign a right back, a striker and an attacking midfielder, right?
So until these names are made public we really cannot tell what is going to happen.
Brazilians are famous for their technique, so who knows maybe they found the 'new Felipe'..
I guess we have to wait and see.

Well, if you want Brazilians they don't have to come from Brazil. Felipe was signed from Europe, so there is always the chance of that happening again.

I think Ricki spent time recruituing from the Beach Footbal league. Unfortunatly there were just too many half naked, tall, leggy, tanned, big bresated women on the beaches for him to be able to focus on the other talent. Such a tough life for a football coach.

Its no longer a problem.

There were a few rumours of the Brazil trip being unrewarding. Ricki has been spotted in OZ watching lower league games supposedly looking for a right back.

Toffeeman, perhaps we should volunteer to do the job for the club so long as they pay our way?
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Thats a sacrifice I'm prepared to make for the good of the club. I'm sure we can bring back "talent" . How about A YF road trip. Coxey will be keen I'm sure.

Its no longer a problem.

I've always wanted to meet a woman who's Brazilian! We could make a stop over in Argentina too and check out their talent...and some players there. I reckon the club could score a couple of decent younger players before the european net grabs them.

All you had to do is ask LG...I know quite a few Brazilian girls around NZ.

But if you want to go to Brazil, better start practicing yur Portuguese now, its a farken difficult language to get a grip on.

And the football is a world away from the A-League.  Soft fouls always given, diving rife and rewarded, almost a one-on-one attitude (like the NBA).  Obviously they are technically sound but having watched it you can see why there have been problems adapting.  As I ahve said in another forum, we should be looking in Argentina...tougher football, without any sacrifice in technical quality.  Plus spanish is a lot easier than portuguese...

ps: grapadura, you asked if I was at that Boca game a week or so ago.  I was, f**king good day out!!  Loving the libertadores at the moment...fantastic competition!

Keep in mind that we are outside  the Transfer window so players are hardly going to rush into any decisions about next season at the moment unless they are offered massive sums of cash!

ill do the job ive done it before !!! I think the brazilian clubs are finding it hard to contract as well as it is in the middle of state champs so for phoenix amaybe this was a factor. My team Botafogo (daniels team too) couldnt find any attacker so its scarce there at the mo

I'm pretty sure the trip was about actually seeing players in action before making any rash moves.  Last year the new lads were signed more or less from DVDs, George and Cleberson weren't what was expected by the club, and the DVD didn't show up Felipe's attitude - which (from what I've heard) tends to be Felipe first, team second.

I wouldn't expect to see too many imports being signed up this early - why pay them for a whole summer of sitting on their arses?  Also, most of the Brasilian lads will wait until they know what options they have for next season before thinking about moving all the way to Australia/NZ.

Naenae Masters.  Prove you are over 35 (or near it) and you're welcome.  I suspect you're not

Plenty of other sides though if you fancy the trek out to the badlands.  Don't listen to Feverish, he'll just tell you to play for Wharfies.

Thats because the Wharfies are the best club in Wellington.

And not a hint of bias there.

Actually, just chilling in the yard with a bottle of Serramalte and catching up on the news from back home...if youre genuinely interested in playing for the wharfies PM Feverish and he may be able to sort you out. Even if you are a Carioca...

Actually, now that Ive been here for three weeks, the old English is getting a bit rusty...Spanish is not much use here, Croatians never been too flash anyway, and Portuguese is tricky to say the least...
