Well, there was the thread earlier this week, so this is asking the question straight out.

OK, I'm kinda simplifying things for the sake of the poll.
I thought we were more exciting to watch last season ...

PS why was the Bugduv thread locked?

Attack when possible and take shots from any position and any distance. However, when defending, close up the shop tighter than a ducks arse - not that I know what a ducks arse is like, it's just an old saying.

I voted for somewhere in between. I like the battling defence and central midfield but I want to see more flair, which starts with finding a balance between defence and attack in midfield by signing a creative player to partner Brown/McKain.

One of the keys to success in football is limiting goals against, which is even more important in such a small league where last beating first isn't that shocking an occurance.

Where's the "Whatever wins us the game" option?

I don't care how we win, Just as long as we do.

Its pretty  obvoius what we will do..

Look dead in the first half then realise.. "sh*t.. have we scored?" then play frantic football and score goals.

"Cantona...how to create space and then weave past a couple of defenders, McClair heres Cantonaaaa...He's done it, that is magnificent by Cantona, and after all his problems and lack of form, and the criticism that has come his way, that is the perfect riposte."

something along the lines of that would be good

not panicking in the goal box when the ball is loose would be a good start. Having someone to pass to when we make the breaks up either flank so guys like Bertos don't end up overrunning because they have nowhere else to go.

We tend to dip a little in intensity after scoring too. THis is often when stuff happens  against the run of play and we get punished for it. We need to be a little bit more ruthless in how we nail down the next opportunity.

Sorry to be a pedantic prick from the UK, but can somebody please tell me what this 'Goal Box' I keep reading about is? Has Tommy Smyth been infiltrating the forum?

Is the 'goal box' inside the penalty area, is it near the 6 yard box?

Oh, and I went for the Something In Between option.Jag2009-01-18 00:31:28

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Are we talking about this season's Phoenix or a future one? Because if it's the Phoenix we have for the final two games I think we're stuck with option B. Otherwise I vote for "relentless attack combined with swarming midfield and watertight defence".

If it's our last two games of this year then honestly I don't care if we win both 1-0 with 10 men in our own half clearing it everytime and 2 own goals.chocnut2009-01-18 02:14:54

It is the 6-yard box (I think). Whatever you call the box inside the penalty area.

To all the people saying 'winning' football: The problem with winning in a boring manner is that it damages the club's long-term viability.

Not only does the club have to be successful on the pitch, among the FFA's off-field critera is that they want clubs averaging 10,000 spectators for home games in the long-term; while we've been winning this year, only 7,000 people are turning up to home games (sometimes about the same away) compared to the 11,000 average (or something like that) last season when we played exciting football.

The FFA wants us to attract fans both home and away, as well as succeed on the pitch, which is why somewhere in the middle is most likely best.

I would prefer them to play the kind of football that means we score more than one goal every now and again and the kind that means our single lone striker doesnt run his nuts off to make up for our other players deficiences in front of goal

Hopefully the (pretty much) 3 defensive midfielder idea can finally f**k off and die now. Ferrante isn't up to standard.valeo2009-01-18 22:44:07

JD, I'm off duty for the next week... holidaying with the Whanau.

You might have to do some modding, we've seconded 2ndBest, but Smith is in the States and I may have no innerwebs.

The only way the Phoenix will improve, is getting rid of the entire defensive mindset.

 1)  Take more shots at goal!

The problem with our shooters, Smeltz and Daniel in particular last night against United, they have a 1-on-1 in the box, and what is the first thing they do - they stop and look for f**king options.

 2) Get out defence off the Penalty Box.

Too many times this season our back 4 have been caught sitting on the top of the penalty box. This allows the opposition to run riot, and gives the 'nix no chance to pull any off-side traps, that any smart back 4 would be looking at.

 3) More attacking players up front and in the mid-field.

The last 2 seasons have shown that defensive mid-fields are the suck, and attacking mid-fields net the 'nix better results. Sorry, but any defensive mid-fielder has to go.
