We just need to get ontop from the start, cleberson and a prety awful game, felipe had another spectacular and should be starting next week. We just need to get on top of them from the very start.

Watched it in a pub with no commentary - loud music for the t*ssers ignoring the 'nix - whilst texting updates to my daughter (mother has no sky ) and exchanging opinions with my wife at home watching it.

We looked dodgy at right back for all three goals. Without that element, we'd not have lost.

mmm iv been wondering most of the match if it was bad marking or bad communication in the defence

One word:  Ferrente.

I think bad combination, thats why Ricki subbed Clebs, to have people who could communicate and who worked when they lost the ball.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

sh*t yes. Don't show him the ball anywhere near the goal. In fact, don't know if the ball should be shown to him at all... Felippe equals amazing, what a boost to the team once again.

tell that sod if even his previous lifes could not score: than stop bloody wasting shots(position) on keep on trying it (not a f* Gerrard, or Lampard not even  a Dardai)

Daniel should toughen up (as he will never win a free kick )

and hello on right back: wake up 20 min before game,  not 30 min into it.

in short

I thought Ferrente was the weakness in the first game and he took that even further tonight. Fact is, he's supposed to be the ball player but the fact is he can't pass the thing.
Drop him for Felipe Ricki!

Agree completely re: Ferrente. We really need to kickstart our offence, first half we had position and possesion but we weren't making scoring opportunities. That, and we need to establish dominance early in the game rather than trying to imitate our mascot and return from the dead. I believe this loss is for the best in that it'll wake up the lads to the fact that the match against Melbourne did have a bit of luck involved, and that we need to dominated the 90 instead of the last 45 and hope for a fairytale ending to the match.

in the cold light of day, its all good blaming individual players, but nobody is looking at the negative system being played.

again ricki chose to play the diamond midfield system which lacks any width. like against melbourne (1st half) it is all to easy to defend against and offers no creativity. he has got to get danial out wide and felipe playing behind smeltz.

the sytem we are playing is a system to contain the opposition rather than taking the game to the opposition. the defense looked a mess with o'dor getting scked in to narrow and the lack of natural full backs in the squad will haunt us all season. O'dor and old are not full backs.

the delivary from set pieces is terrible, and any quality we do get in the box, nobody attacks the ball, an area we should be good at considering the height we have in the team.

and ricki also has to have a word daniel, he cannot keep diving, it will give the football followers a negative perception of the club, it is already frustrating the group i was with and it cost us the second goal when he fell over.... stay on your feet and lets be amazed by your magic!!!

2 games in though its still great to have a club in the city and talking about this stuff.

I think ferrente will probably be dropped for tim Brown when he comes good.

Same weaknesses I pointed out last week. Failure of a half decent Right Back. Either that spot needs to be filled up as the 23rd man or Plodder would do an awesome job. O'Dor and Old are no fullbacks. When attacking, noone bar Smeltz wanted to do anything further. Got to their penalty box and passed around outside it. No penetration - thank god for Felipe.

We didn't play much worse than last week, infact we played fairly similarly although we couldn't get a foot hold as early this week.

Being too harsh on Ferrante he has been poor no doubt but you can't blame this defeat on him, yes he ruined the play many times, wasted delivery of free kicks (very Christie-esque).

The defence was uncoordinated and we didn't play with any width. Cleberson was really poor no aggression like last week (2nd half) O'dor was left isolated or he pushed in too far (maybe natural CB instinct to mark central player) but neither Ferrante or Christie dropped back enough to give him help. I'm still not sure of their positions.

I've been shocked by our style of play in a good way and bad. Normally when I think Ricki Herbert (All Whites and Knights later part last) I think of solid defence sit deep and try and score of set pieces and breaks. Maybe he didn't/doesn't have the resources that he wants in those teams and has what he wants now. Phoenix try to play a completely different game.

I'm so depressed I've given up my second hobby of trolling a-league supporter websites and have placed myself into some sort of media 'blackout' to avoid any misery.  The pain!!!!!!!  Already, this game against the Jets has taken rather critical importance....

Negative play (too many long balls). Players bunched too close together and not providing outlets for each other in midfield. Passes played behind players instead of in front of them. An inability to cross the ball at a dangerous height.  Oh, and the crossbar was playing against us as well!

I watched the game at the Lounge last night and wasn't drunk enough to sing...there was just nothing on screen to inspire me until Felipe came on.

It can only get better.  Time to bounce back.

From an outsider's view?

*O'Dor is no right-back. Christie is no midfielder. Let Old and Christie fight for the RB spot and if they still fail take it from there.
*Ferrante is not good enough. At all.
*I'd play Richard Johnson alongside Aloisi, a slightly more offensive option whilst still providing the shield that the CBs need, and give Felipe the RM role.
*Squad lacks quality. If Felipe comes in to the XI there isn't really a bench player that can provide spark. Brownlie is a handy bench CF, Brown a good midfielder to have there, but you want spark from the other bench player. You should crossing your fingers for George...

I don't think 3-0 was a fair reflection of the match itself. The goals we conceded were quite soft well the 1st was class but the 3rd was just awful defending at this level.

I spose we can forgive Ricki for one blooper in transfer market, that one being Michael Ferrante. Mind you Christie wasn't much yet again although i didn't expect much more from plodder. O'Dor was exposed badly down that right wing, Lochhead had a solid game on the other wing though.

Felipe was class again unlucky not to score as was Aloisi. I feel like Aloisi is the type of captain who won't let these results happen too much more during the season if at all, he just seems to be that kind of leader and that's a good thing.

Also, we do need to give some credit to the Mariners, they played very well again and did deserve their win, and look like they're gonna be right up there come finals time.

Three for me, and two for them.

I agree that 3-0 isn't entirely fair.

They took their chances, and we hit the bar twice.

At least we are still creating chances.

Unfortunately, smeltz always seems to get the ball with his back to goal, and no-one is running off him looking for lay-offs for a shot.

this is an easy one.
the defence has no pace. so play almost on their 18 yard line. so there is a big gap between them and the midfield.

when a long ball is played, there is no support for the player up ther on his own.
there is no talking from the keeper to the defenders.
and the midfield has to have and keep its shape.

Off to the local football this afternoon, my CCM mate will be wanting the beers I now owe him.
This is going to be a very unplesant afternoon.

The midfield diamond is defensive, but realistically we ought to be more cautious away from home.

The right side of defence was clearly the biggest problem. As I understand it none of the choices for right-back would consider it their preferred position.

Ferrante had a poor game. He seems to think every pass he plays has to be a miracle ball, with the result that none of them are. He needs to start just playing the simple ball more often.

Lets not be too gloomy. If we can fix the right side of defence, and aim just inside the post, things will get a lot better.

CCM always start well, their fitness is normally above everyone elses (Especially ours, we had less time ect...) they wither off at mid season when everyone else catches up.

I posted that Ferrante was crap after the warm up game at Masterton and everyone jumped down my throat. He is indeed crap at this level. Dont think we are gonna be seeing to much more of him thank goodness.
I like Cleberstons determination but needs to learn how to pass a ball, to our team.

Some good constuctive comments here!
Funny how a lot of the preseason recruitment discussion was on the defensive players chosen. Lots of people questioned the rightback position as a potential weakness.....and its now turned out to be the case. Shame Noah Hickey threw his toys out of the cot!!!!!
What is required now is to give the job to someone like Christie....and keep them there to give them the experiance.Failing that we still have one squad place to fill.....get on the phone and find a rightback.
We can score OK with the right players on the field...and a bit of luck..hitting the woodwork three times in two games. But we have conceeded five goals in the first two halfs of two games.
FIX THE DEFENCE!!!!! or it will be a long, long season at the bottom of the table.

Think it might be a different story for them this year with Petrovski, Mrdja and Heffernan.

Possibly, they will drill everyone in the opening rounds but as I said around mid season their results balance out.

Will be a fair reflection of them where they are after  round 15-16

Looks like everyone is singing much the same tune.

We need to:
1)  Find a right back  --- I don't think Old or Christie are the solution. .. and even if one of them is, what if Lockhead gets an injury (touch wood) would we have both Old and Christie as fullbacks??? we have one spot left in the squad I say lets start looking for a fast Aussie fullback that can do a Lockhead.. solid in defence and good on attack.

2)  Strengthen the midfield ---   when I heard the Phoenix had signed Brown, Aloisi, Johnson, Felipe, and Daniel, I didn't expect to see Ferrante or Christie, let alone both, starting in the midfield.  Get Felipe and Brown/Johnson in there and get Ferrante and Christie out.

3)  Centre Backs --- at the moment I think Dodd and Odor would be a safest option against teams who like to play soccer.... but I haven't wriiten Clemberson off by any means.

Sign a genuine right back of quality, start Felipe in the hole just behind Smeltzy and Brownlie, Tim Brown in for Ferrante. Lay the law down to Daniel to stay on his bloody feet!!! And definately bring in Richard Johnson. Drop Ferrante and Christie. Put Old at right back for now. Those are the changes i would make, but I'm not the coach!
