Within reason of course, so no Killen, Nelsen or Elliot.

I think Ivan Vicelich if possible.

Vicelich has seemingly said he won;t be coming back for the first season as he has another year on his contract in Holland. He also said he has the option for a further year after that.

I think both Elliott and Vicelich will play for the Phoenix, just won't be this season.

I'd be pretty keen on Bertos I think, although he also has another year left, but i have heard him make noises about coming to Wgtn.

Not good news about Ivan. Although wont he want to leave RKC if they get relegated?

Pretty sure he has an escape clause if they are relegated, then he needs to decide if he hunts for a new job there or comes home to a guaranteed one here...

haven't a clue who should be first, but there had better be someone this week!

we've been going for the while now and apparently talks were already underway before we had a league confirmation.  there has also been a lot of activity accross the tasman.

i'll give it this week, and if no one is in my the end of it, i'll be worried.

oh, sorry danny, i forgot.

i'm hoping for a big name this week, but more realistically i reckon it might be covs; a local hero and nz's all time leading scorere might be a good way to start...

also, i wonder if ricki has scrubbed several of his prreviously preferred signings after the latest all whites' results?

I vote for Bertos.  He's consistantly looked good both for Perth and the All Whites.

God the All Whites must be thinking that they have reduced their chances of being signed considerably. In order from those who played....
C James ( prob won't come)
Paston
Bertos
Noah (only from past experience)
Buncildinho (same)
Brown
Smeltz
then the rest, who would be lucky to get an offer I reckon.

Chris James, a chance for a loan? that would be the All White I'd want.

Tim Brown, Wiremu Patrick and Andrew Barron a must in this team.

i'm casting the net wide here and some of this is not rocket science, but this is a list of kiwi players that i believe ricki herbert will be considering.  i have not included james, oughton, elliott, killen and nelsen, who i reckon are the only unachieveable targets.

goalkeepers:
moss, paston, bannatyne, spoonley

defenders:
hickey, pritchett, boxall, vicelich, old, hay, knowles, bunce, watson, cowan, sigmund, wilson, wylie, lochhead, bouckenhooghe

midfielders:
mulligan, bertos, mcivor, scoullar, barron, brown, christie, fleming, webster, robinson, sandbrook, jasper, campbell, white

forwards:
fisher, pearce, urlovic, knox, barborouses, brockie, smeltz, banks, smith

as for forigners,, well they could come from anywhere.  i guess the better they are, the happier we'll all be!

there are a few outsiders in there. are there any more to add? - (utting, perry, steve sumner, buzzer mackay?)

never seen him play.  has he got the goods?

His goals took the U-20's past Aus 12 months ago.  Starts most games for Hawkes Bay and stands out and started most of the U-20 qualifiers.  He's got something.

Part of our problem is the only way we'll find if they have the goods is giving them a try...

That Aus U-20 series annoys the crap out of me... there are 6 (I think) of the Aus side who have had A-League game time, one of them looks like he's moving to the Bundesliga (Vidosic) yet our side has Brockie and White and neither could get much A-League game time.

The only 45 minutes we lost in 3 games was when they cleared the bench and gave the younger squad members game time in the 2nd half of the third game.  If the Aus players are worth a chance why were the Knights so determined ours weren't ?  ...and Costa wasn't even there !

The best signing that the Phoenix could announce would be that of Costa Barborousos (sp?). He's a young talent that will go places and announcing his signing would also confirm that the franchise is serious about showing that there is a pathway for young Kiwi talent to become professional footballers. I reckon he should be the first player signed. It would certainly be good for Wellington for sure.
The second signing would be the BIG ONE.....a quality import...although I think we'll be struggling to see this happen so soon.

I saw Sam Jenkins about three yrs ago playing in Hamilton for HB. I thought he looked very good then for a young kid, which he was.

Conveny will def sign, He was going to retire at the end of last season, and a close source said he would sign if this kicked off. Agree with reg it fits the bill. I have also heard first hand Ian Woan ex forrest and played with gemmil is close to signing.

I want Fisher and an import striker (Chilean and from ColoColo :D) before Coveny.

Ian Woan is 39, he better not be playing! (although apparently he still trundles round for Hucknall Town in the Conference North which is a really awesome, sorry I mean awful, standard of football).

He was definatly joking. We should know better than to try our luck with English footballers who should be retired, not just because of age but because of the lack of skill.

That kind of joke isn't funny - my blood ran cold for a minute.

However, I have definitely heard that the Phoenix are signing Norman Whiteside, Luther Blissett and Justin Fashanu (who in an inspired piece of marketing actually will rise from the ashes in order to play).

Ivan might be a little difficult to prise away this season. He will be on huge money compared to what Wellington will be able to offer. Why would he turn down the potential of taking home over half a million dollars in Holland to come to NZ and play for a fraction of that?

You would be naive to believe that Herbert could haul in most of the All Whites. Even Mulligan would command a reasonable pay increase should he win promotion to the championship with Sc**thorpe United. I guess it really depends on what the player wants.

Elliott would be picking up a nice wedge just sitting on the bench at Fulham. It will be interesting to see if he considers returning.

I've had my faith in the All Whites dented in the last two internationals and even looking at the NZ A side that couldn't even beat Tahiti in Auckland, you soon realise that the player talent pool is pretty bare. Thread bare. But Ricki has proven with the right combinations he can get results in the A League and maybe a team of joe averages with some selected quality added might get us going.

I dunno, but the thought of Plodder being signed certainly sends a tinge of disappointment through me. I would rather pay $25 to watch Hard News play.

We need to get Brown locked down. Proven at A-League level. Local. Ridiculous engine. Could close down a brothel in Bangkok. Smart pro with right attitude.

For me Tim Brown is as exciting as an evening playing scrabble with the mother-in-law. Going to watch the Phoenix play should be EXCITING.

yeh agreed. Watching Jonas and Johnno waste people in the midfield, for the Knights, now THAT was exciting!

Based on All Whites vs Costa Rica & Venezuela, very few!

Best would be Chris James & Leo Bertos.  Also Paston.

Others might be Hickey, beyond that ... ?

What about Jeremy Brockie? whats the story on him?  He was released by Sydney FC wasn't he? I reckon under a coach like Herbert, he'd go well

Was a bit player year before last at Knights, but some good touches when he came on.
Got even less time with Sydney this past year.
Didn't do much on recent All Whites tour, nor in U20s or NZ A games.
Talented, maybe, but needs to up his workrate.
Could be one of the three U20 players for the Phoenix, but is a work in progress only.  Has not fulfilled the promise he showed in NZFC, since stepping up to A-league.
