A nice first group of signings but where is this brazilian or south american we have heard so much about that is ready to sign. Anyone have any idea who he is???

I would have said up until seeing the news and hearing rumours tonight that Danny Hay, Noah Hickey and Jeremy Christie would be.
We do not want Hay or Christie as why would we want another central mid.

I assume next batch would include Glen Moss, Jeremy Brockie, Che Bunce, John Tambouras, Vaughan Coveny and hopefully Costa and Totori!

no idea!  whoever he is i hope he's class (and not fernando morais from south melbourne)

i'm also hoping for byrnes and/or kovacevic and/or gibson in defence

and

covs up front.

ricki did say on the news that the 3 under 20 signings would all be new zealanders, so this brings brockie, barborouses, boxall, spoonley and ian hogg into play.

Surely not Che Bunce. He has been terrible! Gibson i definetely agree with he is a top player. Fernando De Morales surely not him, there wouldnt be hype over him at all! Hopefully they get byrnes as well cos he looks great!as well as coveny. i know it is unlikely but ive still got my fingers crossed to have dave mulligan and leo bertos in the side, it'd be great to have these two all whites in the country while they are in their prime. Only time will tell but god i hope this south american is good!

I had forgotton about Byrnes, he would be a solid signing in my opinion, I would pass on Kovacevic and don't remember whether Chad Gibson would be good enough or not.

Anyone remember any other free agents from last season?

I think Che is more than good enough for A League level and if has a good partner next to him would be even better.

If I was you I would give up on Bertos as he was one of Perths best players if not the best and they have said they will not release him.

Also give up on Mulligan as he will be in the coca cola championship as why would he even consider the A League as being just under the premiership.

The gaffer doesnt like totori....2 small and got beat up by waitakeri and auckland defence

There are a lot of strikers from yesteryear in that group and interestingly enough a few midfielders as well.

Ones we could look at from there Byrnes, Webster and Lia. Considering Ricki has advised the NZ contingent will be about 9 and 3 of those under 20 I can imagine a good number of that list above will be seriously considered or signed by Ricki.

To Youngheart - That might be the case but I really hope Ricki shows enough faith to give him a shot in pre season when you can play non contracted players to see how he goes rather than writing him off.

The gaffer should sign John Tambouras. I wonder if his left Romania, His time with Universitatea Craiova wasnt the best and the manager didnt like him some Che fellow was saying oin his England Craoiva FC blog.

Yeah the combination Tambouras had with Bunce albeit very brief was the most solid defence we had seen for some time in NSL/ALeague.

For mine it was second to only Vargas and Leijer.

Tambouras is underrated. Bunce is terrific.

hopefully not bunce or hay!isn't bunce one of the guys who played himself out of world cup squad contention after that south american tour?and as for hay-hes just sh*te!

Hpe fully they have learnt well from the past and use the first year to blood and develop new player potential, not rest old players on long contracts.

The blame for the Latin America tour should be with the man who thought playing a 3 man defnce like Old, Bunce and Hay was a good idea...  immobile doesn't begin to describe it.

Che, Noah and Ivan may have worked but not those three.  Then Che was benched for the next game so Danny could play with Old in the middle.

I really hope we don't sign Sime Kovacevic or Jeremy Brockie. Brockie was good with Canterbury United and with the knights but he has really lost it. Che Bunce is also more than up 2 a-league level and hopefully Costa, this south american and Noah Hickey get signed. Noah Hickey is a class player who is brilliant in defence and midfield. Another person well worth a try is Damien Mori.

Dosnt look like Hickey is joining if you can trust what was said on the news tonite.

i don't think the system was entirely to blame.  we've seen it work over the years with the likes of evans, gray and dunford playing at the back.  the same players also struggled with a back four.

i also don't think hickey would function as one of a back three.  opportunities to get forward are limited, he's lacking in strength and he's not a natural defender.  also, whilst i think it's his best position, ivan is as slow as the others.

There seems to be speculation that Fernando is leaving adeliede. Hes brazilian..and a midfield/stiker. And he is class.

He was class... he had a pretty average year this year, although supposedly has found a little form in the Asian Champions League.

He's also getting on these days.  Not sure we want to be a retirement home.

Noah played in a back three on occassion for the Knights and in V1 he completely owned Damian Mori for Perth in a game at NHS, and in twenty years bugger all people have managed to do that.

I agree with HN about Fernando Rech. It does seem like he has past his best going off last yr. I really think u guys should push for the signing of Leo Bertos. I reckon he's NZ's best player to be honest and would be excellent playing alongside a playmaker with a target man up front. Leo should be No.1 priority

Are you talking about NZ's best player in Australasia or worldwide?

I so dearly hope your talking about in the A-League.

Yeah surely he means in the A- League. With the likes of Nelson, Elliott, Killen, Vicelich, James and Mulligan offshore, bertos wouldnt make the top 5 kiwi footballers.

I think Tony Lochhead, one import we havnt heard of, Adrian Webster, Glen Moss and John Tambouras
Permalink Permalink
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
lochhead would be good as is tambo and glen moss, but i think webster is totally overrated and the point that he has exactly the same dynamics as the centre midfielders already signed does not bode confidence in me. Plus he punches like a girl. i hope they dont sign him, we need wingers and speedsters not 'enforcers'.

Exaclty, we have our enforcers now. It's time to sign some athleticism, skill and flair.

Yep. sorry. just in the A-League. Not that educated about the players outside besides Nelson. is Vicilich more of a central midfielder, or is he better out on the flanks?

Ivan Vicelich is a defensive midfielder/central defender he was playing for Roda JC and now RKC, he might be someone to think about but he never had pace when he was younger so wonder what he would be like in another years time when I think he is off contract.

I think RKC are officially down - heard word he had a release clause and he hardly featured towards the end of the season - be a great signing.

if the phoenix did get vicelcih than either one of the players weve got in the centreeg. aloisi, johnson would either be pushed on to the bench or i think that if we acquired vicelich that he would play in a centre defensive role

Don't know if you guys have seen this but the Sydney Morning Herald has reported that you're after Juninho Paulista (the Juninho who used to play for Middlesbrough, not the one who plays for Lyon).

It's on the second page. Also says you're after Wayne O'Sullivan and Noel Spencer.
