sign on for another year for the Nix, play with the guys who are gonna be with him in a big year with the AW's, have a good WC campaign/Confed Cup, and then get picket up by a big club ie Europe?

Cos his wife wouldn't let him?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

He's too old. I think he's 26 now, 27 next year, 28 minimum he could go into this "big european club" by then the club wouldn't want a 28 year old.

Yip WAY too old for Europe - Chelsea sure did screw up buying Anelka at 29!! no way he's gonna score any goals.
And just announcement that Real Madrid have bought Huntelaar - 25 year old who they think is still young. Football players must age a heck load in those two short years.

Wasn't Killen 27 when Celtic signed him?

He has been to England once, and didnt seem to get far, maybe he realised the A-League is as good as its going to get for his career and better to be a big fish in a small pond, than bounce around the lower leagues in Europe.

Because he's an idiot.

Though I'll try not to express that too much until he's scoring against us next year.

Huntelaar is an established player, as is Anelka. They're not going to purchase a player like Smeltz unless he was alot better. He'd be bad investment. Especially for a "major" club.

^ We aren't talking Man United, Real Madrid etc. I reckon he could get a gig at a Championship side pretty easy. Nick Carle went straight from the A-League to Turkey then the Championship. (He is 27)

Indeed valeo.  Michael don't forget that there are over 92 professional clubs in England and Wales alone and almost all of them would have it in their power to offer a comparable salary to what Smeltz is probably earning.

Quality of life is another question.

Mostly I suspect it's to do with the ball and chain.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I think Smeltz got F*^cked around contract wise from the Nix - Wants security  - not just a 1 year deal!  Marquee Money doesn't mean big money - just outside the cap!  Our offer wasn't apparently very good - GCU somehow came up for more under the cap! We must blame ourselves!  Terry in a financial crisis and not willing to pay when he needed too!  Guess Smeltzy is just looking after himself and not us!

Terry's business is in a financial crisis, but look at those finance company owners where the finance company went bust, they're still living it up on an island somewhere. /Hopefullness

He was offered marquee status and pretty much a blank check. Of course Smeltz is looking after himself and his family - what is wrong with that?

I agree that we should have signed him up earlier.

How do you know this? Or is that just baseless speculation?

If you knew about anything your talking about you would know that money wasn't an issue as the Phoenix offered Smeltz a "blank cheque".

Except that Wellington offered the exact same financial deal as Gold Coast. Same salary, same time length. Money had nothing to do with it because there was no difference in income whatsoever.

As has already been expressed in every media source except Sunday "News"
As has been expressed by the club itself.
As has been expressed by Smeltz himself.

Again, do some research.

Sure, I'll keep reading to newspapers. I'll keep watching TV, keep following stuff on the net - and you can keep coming up with (conspiracy?) theories while using no evidence whatsoever, and accuse respected media sources (who know a heck of a lot more about the situation than either of us) with lying just because it doesn't fit your worldview.

ok to try and get back on track.
You obviously know Shane well - do you think it ever came into his consideration that it is a big year for the AWs next year (and the fact that leaving the Nix will not help our chances)??

So your telling me that you would rather live in a city where none of your family is and is cold all the time or a place with awesome weather, you were brought up there and some of your family lives there?

I would think lifestyle for him and his family would come in to it, if he wants to raise his child on the gold coast then he's going to do that regardless of what he gets paid, sure it comes into it but saying it is the single motivating factor is naive

Then how come you seem to know so much for certain .

Id think the multiple sources thay have come out and said we offered more, would know more than you and danny hay would.

Allegedly

I think if he was going to sign of another year, then he would've signed for 2-3 as a marquee player and stayed with us. The choice of re-signing for a single year doesn't really hold from a professional point of view. Instead he chose the money and the prospect of a more successful team (that's all to be seen yet, my friend!)

That said, his missus obviously put a big leash on him and whipped him hard on the arse.

Wish he had stayed, of course, but that's what I think.
