Can someone please explain to me why it is that any team from
Auckland playing in an Aussie comp has to be called the
NZ Knights/Warriors/Breakers but the Phoenix are different.
I think I know the answer already, and I am not trying to
start another boring Auckland vs Rest of the Country debate
(yawn!). In fact I support a team from Welly being called the
Wellington Phoenix since its the people from that area
who will be walking through the turnstiles, but whenever it comes
to an Auckland team we suddenly have to be all PC and try not
to piss off the rest of the country.

I am myself an Aucklander - and I much prefer the Wellington
Phoenix than New Zealand something.

I think it's more a matter of timing that anything else. People
have come to realise over time that the word "New Zealand" should
be left for the national representative teams. Unfortunately for
the Warriros and the Breakers, their names are now basiclly set in
stone. The Phoenix were luckily in that they were able to start at
a time when people were reacting to the overuse of NZ, so they
decided not to use it, a descision I appluad. phil_style2007-05-04

Bimbo - If you were able to read more than two words then you
would know that I agree with the team being called Wellington
Phoenix also.
Maybe timing does have something to do with it, but if
the new franchise had been in Auckland again i doubt it would have
been an 'Auckland' team.
As much as it upsets me I can't go to any more home games, I
will still be supporting the Phoenix no matter what.
I though another reason might be that if by some miracle we win the
whole damb thing in like 2 years then mayb A league will let NZ
have another representative team.

Teams should be called after the city they're in - like almost
every other football team in the world (well maybe not Port Vale -
but that's another story). The Warriors should have stuck with
Auckland Warroirs, the New Zealand Warriors is dumb!!

So what are Port Vale named after? An area of Stoke? Like a lot of
clubs are named after areas of London.

Because you touch yourself at night.
I thought the Warriors changed their name in attempt to marketable
to the whole country, as at the time Wellington were in the process
of making a bid, or had just failed. The Kingz took the same tack -
given the relatively low profile of football in NZ, it made more
sense to try to get the country behind them. Interesting to note
the Aussies still called both teams Auckland when publishing points
tables, etc (At least around 1999-2001). No idea what the ratonale
was behind Breakers and Knights as I wasn't in NZ then. Perhaps
Phoenix didn't need to appeal to this national support as much, as
Wellington sports fans have a reputation for turning up in larger
numbers, even when their teams are mediocre.
