If Krishna signs and Talay and Gill still want an import striker, they could try and get former All Whites and Phoenix striker Greg Draper back. Not sure if he would be considered an import, was born and raised in England and moved to New Zealand when he was 12. Had a short stint with the Phoenix as a teenager in their first two seasons and only got to play a couple of games. He has now become the 2nd all time leading goal scorer in Wales 1st division which for whatever reason is nowhere as big as the A-League but still a respectable enough league to be playing in. Not sure how keen he would be on coming back to New Zealand considering how long he has been in Wales. He dropped down to the 2nd division last season and hasn't had much game time so far, though I think this is because he is taking on a player-coach role. There also doesn't seem to be an end date on his contract.

We should look at bringing this Shane Smeltz guy back into the fold. Cracking record and proven in the A-League that fella.

While we're at it we could bring back Tony Warner as GK cover for when Sail potentially makes a move offshore...
Ok it was a bad suggestion, sorry.

At least Draper can still play if he wants to, he will be 33 in August.

He wouldn't be a foreigner as he's a New Zealand citizen, but we're not going to be picking up strikers from the Welsh second tier.

He only went to the second tier last season, he's spent the rest of his career in Wales playing in the 1st division. It was a dumb suggestion and Talay and Gill can definitely find someone better if they want to.

If that were the tier of player we happened to be looking at, then we'd be better off looking in our own back yard.

Hamish Watson
Angus Kilkolly
Garbhan Coughlan (Import)

And of those, it'd be a stretch to say they'd be leading the line for the majority of the season, let alone banging in the 10+ goals we're after from our front men. Bench options and squad players at absolute best.

Draper? I have just come back to the forums and i feel like im in a time warp haha.

One flash back is Watson (mentioned above) I think he'd be a good squad filler if hes still up to the pace.

We may get Krishna. Either way, im sure Talay will get a us a qualify import striker. Krishna/import/Waine to lead the line. Its a long season and we need options.

If we're still doing transfermarkt free agent speculation, I'm a big fan of these four blokes:

Alfred Finnbogason
- 33 years old
- Most recently at Augsburg
- Unreal scoring record in the Eredivisie and a solid return in the Bundesliga
- 61 caps/15 goals for Iceland
- Struggled with injuries last season

Nicolai Jörgensen
- 31 years old
- Most recently at FC Copenhagen (Stamenic's parent club)
- Very good scoring record in Eredivisie and Danish Superliga
- 39 caps/9 goals for Denmark
- Two unknown injuries last season

Cheick Diabaté
- 34 years old
- Most recently at Al-Gharafa SC (Qatar Stars League)
- Pretty dominant in Middle East (Last 4 seasons)
- Solid record in Ligue 1 & Serie A
- 39 caps/15 goals for Mali
- No injuries since 2019/20

Mame Diouf
- 34 years old
- Most recently at Hatayspor (Turkish Super Lig)
- Excellent scoring record last two seasons in Turkey (31G + 8A in 75 games)
- 51 caps/10 goals for Senegal
- Only missed 3 games with injury since 2013/14
- Rumoured to be signing with Samsunspor in the Turkish 2nd Div

There's plenty of other great looking options too but these four just stood out to me (plus Lasogga ofc)

There is also this guy, Celtic's 2nd all time leading goal scorer. Hasn't scored a decent number of goals though since the 19/20 season.

We picked up Taylor and Wootton cuz they were on the outer with their clubs, so wouldn't surprise me if we picked up someone under contract atm. So I'll throw out Jordan Rhodes name cuz he seemed to be on the outer at Huddersfield last season (and he was so good at Blackburn when he was younger).

Alright just trying to make a suggestion. Idk do you guys think Talay and Gill will go for another striker if Krishna signs? Ball, Krishna, Waine and Barbarouses, would preferably have him play out wide but still can play as a striker if needed. Is that enough depth?
I would imagine of those four, all except waine would likely be seen in more of a support role than the "prolific goal scorer" uffy is looking for. While Roy would be a good pickup I don't know if that's him any more

Kosta Grozos just started following the Phoenix today. He looks to have come off contract with the Jets on June 30th. The only other A League club he follows is the Jets, not even the Wanderers who he used to play for, so seems a bit weird to follow them out of the blue.

I would love for Rhodes to come and play for us. Isn't a 20-30 goals a season player in the Championship anymore but could surely still score quite a few if he came here. Don't know how keen Huddersfield would be in letting him go though.

What are you basing your judgements off? Age? It's pretty daft to write off players based on that, especially given their careers and records.

We're hardly likely to unearth some 20-year-old Portuguese wunderkind in the A-League, and even if we did, I *GUARANTEE* people would initially whine about signing unproven talent to a visa spot. It's bitten other clubs in the ass in previous years.

In this league, you want your foreign players to be near-certain starters, week in, week out. Best way to get a gauge of that is from their previous records, i.e. are they experienced and capable.

Of course, some older pros would only come here for a pre-retirement payout, but I trust Uffie 100% to weed those people out early on.

Huge pass from me. The kid has been hyped up by WSW fans for so long & offered nothing at the A-League level when the Jets gave him a chance.

Agree, hasn't scored a single goal or even provided an assist. We need to focus on getting a Piscopo replacement and a new prolific target man, even if Krishna signs.

Could see him signing on for a year to give that midfield some competition. Perhaps a sign that Rufer might not even make it back on the park until the very backend of the season?

Don't know much about the lad, but seems could be a squad option in case of further injury/suspension. Doesn't exactly look like he'd set the world on fire however...

Yeah would only make sense as an injury replacement for Rufer maybe hes not expected to be back as early as hoped?

It's the only logical explanation to be fair. By all accounts Alex is a 12 month injury. Injured himself in mid March, didn't have surgery until about 4-6 weeks afterwards going off media reports from the time.

Possibly looking at only starting rehab and fitness work well after the New Year has been rung in, and then, **if** going all well maybe he'll get ¼ or a ⅓ of a season at the very best, provided no setbacks or further complications.

If he was to be announced, it doesn't exactly strike me as a 100% unexpected signing, purely because of where Rufer is at. He wouldn't be on much coin and plays a position where there is every likelihood he'll get a few games due to injuries/niggles and suspensions.

Krishna, Hooper, Hemed, hell even Ifill. Weird how almost all of our most prolific goalscorers have been 29/30+ during their Nix peaks.

2008/09 26 year old Smeltz (12G in 20apps), 2012/13 24 year old Brockie (16G in 24apps) and 2014/15 26 year old Burns (13G in 24apps) the only real exceptions.

Sure I'd like us to sign an insanely prolific 24 year old over someone on the wrong side of 30, but we don't necessarily have that luxury. What I want more than anything is for us to sign someone who can bang them in the back of the net and win us a trophy for once, and if that means picking up a 34 year old Mame Diouf, a 31 year old Nicolai Jorgensen or whoever it ends up being then so what? Uffie's only got a year left on his contract so we're probably due a rebuild soon anyway, if we can get an older, proven goalscorer that can stay fit and bury chances for a season or two then give me that asap.

I guess you've never seen Welsh football. Standard is at best piss poor. Better standard in NZs Northern League.

Wonder why that is, Wales have always had an impressive football team.

Ok maybe not always.
best Welsh teams play in England.

Like Swansea and Cardiff City?

Even Wrexham would destroy any other "non-England league" Welsh team.

Kosta Grozos just started following the Phoenix today. He looks to have come off contract with the Jets on June 30th. The only other A League club he follows is the Jets, not even the Wanderers who he used to play for, so seems a bit weird to follow them out of the blue.

Just curious, when a player has followed us on social media in the past, has he always ended up signing with us?

Lamine Kone followed us last season and obviously didn't end up signing with us

We picked up Taylor and Wootton cuz they were on the outer with their clubs, so wouldn't surprise me if we picked up someone under contract atm. So I'll throw out Jordan Rhodes name cuz he seemed to be on the outer at Huddersfield last season (and he was so good at Blackburn when he was younger).

That is a good point, I hope Talay and Gill are doing something like that in the Championship or even League One. It would be great to get Rhodes but Huddersfield's new manager seems keen on keeping him so the likelihood of that happening is pretty low. I also don't think Will Grigg is a terrible option.

The other EFL Welsh team is Newport (L2). A big issue is that it's actually harder to get from North Wales to South Wales than it is to get from either part to neighbouring bits of England

West Brom want rid of Kenneth Zohore. He’s probably too expensive for the Nix but he could be immense. Big, strong player, doesn’t score too often in the Championship but could go one or two ways, either A-League Golden Boot, or Rudy Gestede 2.0
