The knee has been over a year now when last season is taken into account... You have to question the health plan around it.

Not a doctor, but clearly what they are doing is not working.

With a username like that you must be an expert. Would you recommend amputating and replacing it with a metal leg?

Old and Paulsen are the only younger guys coming off contract this season. Or maybe  someone like Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues.

Snapped my tibia and fibula in a footy game and got the rod inserted... rod was too big. Couldn't bend my knee properly but had to wait 3 years for the bone to heal before they could pull it out. Doctors are human. They get things wrong too. Just wondering if they did with his treatment plan.

Knee issues often point to problems around the hips or ankles so they can end up being a lot more complicated to fix when you're trying to get to the root cause of the issue especially with something as dynamic as football.

I won't be shocked to see more and more young players develop knee problems though due to the proliferation of artificial pitches, they're awful for the joints long term and we're seeing more teams play their footy on them including the Nix reserves.

that's a good point.
i wonder if there's a case for the nix to play their games on the (emaculate) grass at trentham.

Personally I think they'd be crazy not to try to shift the games there. All these young players represent an investment right, it'd be mad to let that potential return go to waste due to completely avoidable injuries. Grass is king.

FUCK YES AP TO 2027!

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/300999648/wellington-phoenix-tie-goalkeeper-alex-paulsen-down-to-new-longterm-deal

The way he's going he's gonna get snapped up offshore in 2024 or 2025 but we'll get a nice fee for it. Really stoked for the club, really stoked for AP. Great bit of business

He's been one of our top prospects for a long time now, has looked outstanding in the academy, national age group sides and now looks right at home in professional football.

I think he'll be regarded as one of the top keepers in the league by the end of the season, will be NZs No 1 before long and the sky really is the limit for him at this point.

How good is having players on multi year deals? Especially promising young lads like AP, LKH and fin.
Let's appreciate where we are as a club vs some years gone by when it's older blokes on rolling one year contracts

Very happy to have signed him on. Doesn't mean he has to leave either but realistically if he ends up going after a couple of great seasons, at least we will make some money!

I think he should do at least 2 full seasons at the Nix, in the ALM. Still incredibly young for a keeper. So much time yet to sign overseas, and how many ALM players have gone to Europe too early.

At some point Paulsen will have a game with a bad error or two. Needs to go through that challenge in a pro environment, the dip in confidence that could happen, how you cope with adversity etc etc. Better to go through that the first time in a comfortable club environment he knows well, than in some cut throat foreign land.

Agree with the above but even more bearing in mind he is a keeper. He has a lot of maturing to do and the best place to do that is playing games as number one. The other issue with sitting on the bench in a stronger European league is you are kind of dust as a keeper and there is never going to be a 30 min stint of the bench to show what you can do

Seriously hope welnix are planning on making a serious offer to keep Zawada past this season, if he heads back to Europe that’s Algood, but I can’t stand the thought of him playing for another a league club

I think they will try to get him recognised as a marquee signing by the A League to try and get them to contribute to his wages.

What was Krishna offered before he left?

Love to see them offer him a 3 year gig with a deceny buy out clause (that he's happy with too).

If he keeps scoring - good chance a struggling team might look to buy him in Jan window before his contract runs out for a reduced amount. If he hasn't resigned by then, NIX will find it hard to say no if it anything decent.

iirc we tried to give Davila our biggest contract ever but MacAthur outbid us I think he got 2 mil AUD over 3 years? So I assume we'll probs try the same offer and hope no other clubs are willing to go higher. I think him going back to Europe is a higher possibility maybe one of the bigger Polish clubs will be looking at his form and will want to bring him home.

On the other hand, golden boot and some glory here and he might be tempted to stay if everything else is right. Bird in the hand and all that. Doesn’t have to get himself established again in a squad or a league and doesn’t get clattered by ex- Bundesliga II defenders…

He is quite young and was never capped. Offer him a 3 year deal and pathway to citizenship. He'd be a shoe in to the all whites even at 30-32.  Maybe the idea of potentially snaggy a world cup appearance might keep him around.

He played for Polish age group sides all the way up to u21s, so can't swap to NZ.

At the moment only Legia Warsaw is anywhere near reasonable (internationally) quality.
Polish football press does not allow anyone to forget what sharkty performance the team has put in lately (including their inability to beat neither Albania nor Moldova in Euro qualifiers).   Zawada is on strength of the past few games a better striker than Lewandowski, whose best years seem to be behind him.

I think it will be in the 7-9k range.. if I think back to the best crowds at Eden Park, 2019’s 1-1 draw against the victory because there was lots of hype around Honda as well as we were high flying I think in the top 3 of the table.. People knew that the game was going on and word got around through the local clubs and that got people to go.
That being said this year nor last year has this game got through the local clubs with the amount of young football players that don’t know the game is on we will struggle to pull a crowd..
if the Phoenix sent something to the clubs like a discounted general admission zones and word got around the game was on the people are easily there to get 15k to the ground. Defenitely tonight’s game against the victory if we win we will go in flying and that will pull a couple additional thousand too..
all being said now unless all goes perfectly don’t think it will be anything above the 9-10k mark. Also mt smart is worse for location and that will defenitely draw some people away.
If the Auckland team wants to pull regular crowds the connection with the local clubs must be there but at the end of the day it will be based on results and if Auckland signs any big names ..
coochiee
Be interesting to see how the Nov 25th double header crowd at Mt Smart compares to those the Nix have got at Eden Park the last few seasons. I'm sure Bill Foley's group will be watching closely.

I still think EP is a better ground to be the principal stadium for most, of the new Auckland team's home games.

Just wondering if anybody is planning to go to the game on Sunday January 14 at commbank stadium against Perth as part of the unite round? I’ve already booked flights a few days ago and making a weekend around it about $700 return, but I’m wondering if I’ll be standing alone or, in my hopes, there are some fans going?
On Saturday night Sydney FC are playing at the SFS and now Uffies in charge now I’m interested to go to that game as well..
There’s also some decent hotel prices for good looking hotels around 150-200 a night if you go through the a leagues 15% hotel discount on the unite round faqs website https://aleagues.com.au/unite-round-faqs/

26 yr old Kraev would fit that profile better than Zawada, as I read somewhere he does have a Kiwi partner. Pity he's cap tied to Bulgaria.

And as further above, sounds like Zawada is cap tied to Poland. I think we'd all be a bit shocked anyway, if he was still at the Nix beyond this season. A 2nd campaign of high goal scoring, and he is going to attract some seriously moneyed suitors, beyond the Nix pay scale.

We need to give him an extra 1-2 years contract immediately so we can get some money for him at least

Why would Zawada bother signing a new Nix contract, knowing he can leave on a free soon. Realistically unless the goals dry up he's leaving. Maybe in January, if some club is in urgent need of a striker and offer big moolah.

Sad but true.

Even Kraev will have a lot of scouts watching. He needs to be more consistent though. I think  Kraev needs a good full season to attract the interest that he'd want in Europe. IMHO Kraev could be Serie A if he could play at his best week in, week out. Same as Piscopo. But so far they can't.

Ben Old on a three-year deal? Kraev going for the white picket fence with his girlfriend?

Yeah, I wondered about the use of words and whether the "major" part might be the contract more so than the player.

Hoping it'll be one of the younger guys, Kraev or (as unlikely as it is) Zawada. Be pretty disappointing if it's an extra year for Barbarouses or something similar. My guess is Surman on a 3 year deal
